When I started out with a company and asked to attend a meeting and write a recap for those not there is a great opportunity to separate yourself. A trick I used was I had a micro recorder disguised as a pen so after the meeting I could listen to everything again on my own and you can imagine the compliments I got on my details haha

My two big takeaways from this video: 1. Listening to learn requires focus, organized note-taking, and proactive follow-up (asking questions and taking action) 2. Showing others you're listening is just as important as absorbing information effectively. The skill I need to work on most is asking clarifying questions. I've always been the quiet type in any sort of discussion--often I get caught up in trying to absorb what's going on that I forget to engage in the conversation. I think my next step is to prioritize asking clarifying questions in my next interaction with others. Like your 1st tip "flipping the switch" but instead focusing on voicing my thoughts, opinions, and questions. That way I can get better at drawing more useful information & showing others I'm taking things seriously. This video was very helpful. You have +1 subscriber. Thank you! :)

The skill I need the most work on is 1, flip the listening switch. I tend to think of what I want to say, or get distracted with my own thoughts etc. So I need to really practice making everything else disappear and just focusing on the speaker from the start of the conversation. When you said even though We have understood well, we should ask one or two questions.

Follow through and note taking

Using my hearing aid would help a lot.

I need help in all of the areas. Taking notes can be very hard if you have not been trained to do so. Such as shorthand. I am very ADHD. I have great intentions to listen. However even sitting down to listen to your videos to try and learn and within seconds I find myself doing something else. At the same time as I'm trying to listen to you. I truly wish I could overcome this. I need all the help I can get. It frustrates so many people in my life which leaves me very frustrated. As I wish I could always be there for them.

I need to work on Flipping the Switch and being fully present and Follow Up. I’m so busy I don’t always follow up and then .... I’m disappointed - but I do recognize it was MY lack of follow up. THANK YOU!!!!

It's a great habit to take notes.

All four points were great, but my most immediate need is to put away distractions (I often check emails during a phone conversation, which automatically diminishes what I remember from the conversation), and to take notes. I had an embarrassing moment yesterday when I forgot that my boss' daughter was getting married in May--which wouldn't have happened if I had taken notes.

Hi Alex! Thanks for sharing this video. The tips that you gave will be very useful:) The problem that I usually face is in making notes in a precise manner and simultaneously listening to what the other person is speaking. So, what happens most of the times is I end up with incomplete information which is more dangerous than not having any information. I feel the reason for this is the speed in which the other person speaks differs. Some people speak very fast in which case neither am I able to make notes nor am I able to absorb all information at one go. It would be very helpful if you give some tips to resolve this issue of mine. Thank you

Keep your notes brief. Just write down key words, which only takes a second. Then immediately return to your eye contact. In other words, make listening the priority and use note taking to support it. If note taking gets in the way, then reduce it.

Asking questions for clarification

I need to work on asking clarifying questions. Because it is weird in my country some people thing that if you ask a lot of questions people get mad and they think you are not listening.

I think asking follow up question based upon what the other person has been talking about is the key. If they are talking about sailing (e.g., "I was out on my sailboat this weekend.") then ask a follow up about that (e.g., "Where did you go sailing?" or "What kind of sailboat do you have?"). That shows you are listening because if verifies what they just talked about.

i am really good at listening in class, work and other related conversations. I commit to listening, i take notes and do follow up with action. My biggest challenge is with family and other social conversations. I tend to be absent minded and usually dont remember the details. How best can i improve on this without looking too formal and overzelous?

taking notes is what I find difficult for me at times it just causes me to get distracted especially when the presenter if fast in speaking.

If it is distracting you, then when note taking (if I were you), I'd focus on just the main ideas and not worry too much about the small details. That'll help you stay focused on what the person is saying if they are speaking quickly.

Your talks were very effective for leaders but is more difficult to do when the speaker being listened to is talking about you. You have to be a third party until you have been given a chance to speak. The other difficulty comes when the speaker never pauses between topics to allow you to respond empathetically or actively on any one topic, but gets upset if you interrupt so you can show you are active listening.

I think it depends upon the person. I suspect there are a variety of reasons we don't follow though and/or follow up. If this is something you struggle with, then the key is to figure out why you personally do not follow through.

Usually, comprehensive listening skills are used at work, in school, and in information-driven interactions. For personal relationships, you'd typically be using empathetic listening skills. I have another video on empathetic listening skills that may be worth watching.
