    If you live in the UK, look at your council websites, you often get discount on compost bins. For instance, I got mine for £18.50, when on Amazon it was £75! Councils want us to go green, so have lots of incentives - less waste and less money spent at the garden center buying compost.

    Nice video. I use 2"x4"x5' welded wire fabric, formed into a circle 40" in diameter. Attach the ends together with something that is easily removable or cut the wire so it hooks together. Fill bin with finely chopped material. Every 2-4 weeks, take the wire away, move a few feet away, & turn the compost using a four tine curved cultivator, mixing the outer layers into the inside of the new pile. Keep moist & cover the top of the pile w/ black plastic. You will have compost very quickly.

    My compost bin sits on a a piece of carpet on a concrete floor. I keep topping up with kitchen and garden scrap (dry and wet stuff). I make sure I pock the compost with a stick once a week to air it. I have sweet smelling dark rich compost which is over 2 years old. I take what I need from the bottom. I have lots of worms and bugs happily living in my compost bin. 😀

    We would recommend turning your compost, as this helps your waste to heat up quicker and therefore aids decomposition. But, before you turn your compost please check that there isn't any hibernating wildlife in there. However, your compost will still rot down if you don’t turn it but at a slower pace as it will be cold. We have an online webinar coming up on the 17th March, all about how to create successful compost every time. Our webinar has plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and gain top tips for the perfect blend. If you would like to read more about the topics that will be covered, please see: bit.ly/38laS5t

    I experienced to plant using worm casting, but my plant burned and die. I make a big mistake, since I am a beginner, the proportions of mixing casting and water is not properly done. While I am watching you tube i learned a lot properly using compost and worm casting. Your demo of proportions is very useful. I do not want to make the same mistake, so your video is really a great help. Thank you.

    Good video, but if you get a bin with a lid on each end, then just flip it over to get to the good stuff. I use two trash cans drilled full of half-inch holes. I just pour one into the other when full. All the done compost will then be on top, and the empty can ready to start a new batch.

    Such lovely video, thank you. Question: in the last part, mixing for potting, you are putting 1/3 compost, with 1/3 loam (?) and 1/3 leaf mould. Where should I take loam from? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Thank you nevertheless! Alex

  • @GardenOrganic

    @GardenOrganic

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Alex. Loam is soil which has a nice even mix of sand, silt and clay particles. It can be taken from your garden soil, as long as your soil isn't really heavy clay, otherwise you may struggle. Traditionally, people have created a loam pile by digging up grass and turf, turning it grass side down, making several layers, then covering it with tarpaulin. This takes at least a year to break down, but as the grass breaks down, it releases nutrients into the soil. This may not be practical for everybody, but it is a great use of the turf if you are creating a new border. I have also found that the piles created by moles works really well, as they have cultivated it for you. If you can't source either of these, you could buy in garden top-soil, making sure it has been certified to BS3882 standard (most has). Loam will almost certainly have weed seeds in, so it is fine for using as a potting compost if you don't mind weeding it occasionally but is not very practical for using in seed composts. Hope this helps!

    I take a pee into a old plastic milk carton, and add that to my compost bin. It's a brilliant accelerator. I got this tip from Bob Flowerdew on the BBC radio 4 Gardeners Question Time.

    One must keep in mind that what goes in comes out. If you are on any medication you should not be mixing your pee with the compost.

    How often should I water the compost in the bin. Should I open the lid periodically and expose the compost to sunlight?

  • @GardenOrganic

    @GardenOrganic

    4 жыл бұрын

    You will only need to add water if the contents of the bin are particularly dry and you don’t have a supply of moisture-rich, green materials to add. There is no particular need to expose the compost to sunlight, it is the heat from the sun which will help to speed the composting process up and this can be achieved in an open heap or an enclosed composting unit.
