    Thank you very much what a great design idea, i've been searching for a feeding station idea recently this is the one i will be going with,i've been putting out specialist hedgehog food for about a week now at night and in the morning theres the cleanest food bowl you've ever seen not realising the neighbourhood cats are having a right feast, they probably can't believe my ignorance,i've only just discovered hedgehog's so its all a bit new, anyway thanks again for the help

    Turfing irons - probably not as good as proper Victorian jobs but B&Q sell one or even Amazon . Turfing irons into Google throws up quite a few from £20 - £30. As to pests on strawberries the worst one we had was our old cocker spaniel ... she ate them off the plants !

    Re the tights method which makes total sense, how long do you keep them in for? Do you replace the leaves every week? Month? Spring?

  • @GardenOrganic
    @GardenOrganic4 ай бұрын

    You can replace every two weeks or so :) As long as diluting to a weak tea colour.

    You can also pop some leaves in a pair of tights and infuse in your watering can, or layer leaves around plants and let them rot down :)

    Thank you for this, will get going & make it. My comfrey is in its third year, grown from seed & doing very well, think it needs a bigger pot. Ive used a couple of leaves for neck sprain & they worked well... The bees adore the flowers. Its a winwin!! P.S. Your volume is a bit low OG.

    Interesting video. However I cannot see what you are using too roll the paper around. I have taken to putting a set of 9 loo roll centres or homemade pots into old meat trays. I do not wrap the paper round the bottom, the potting mix is held in by the plastic tray. Then four chitted peas per pot. Once the pea roots are coming out of the bottom it is time to plant them out. So then into the soil and a plastic bottle on top to keep off the rabbits and deer etc.

    Thanks for the feedback, great tips. We used a small bottle, but any sturdy cylinder will do :)

    Unfortunately, this is pretty poor advice. I've been doing exactly this and all I get is wet rotting matter, not compost. This is caused by the material at the bottom not getting enough oxygen and therefore it rots rather than composts. The material needs oxygen to turn into compost and these bins are not very good. The material needs to either be turned regularly or airated to add oxygen otherwise the material will rot and release methane.

    There is so much 'junk' on the web and KZread re compost, one doesn't know what to believe. For some reason, this one makes sense - I could be proven wrong. However, for the time being, I'm going to go with your advice. It makes so much sense. Thank you.

    I may start growing these in our conservatory - Karelas are packed with nutrients beneficial to health when taken raw in a smoothie with other fruit, and they make delicious sabji when stuffed with tomatoes, onions, ginger and other herbs. Even growing small karela here in the UK is a feat to be reckoned with!!!! Thank you for sharing!

    Such lovely video, thank you. Question: in the last part, mixing for potting, you are putting 1/3 compost, with 1/3 loam (?) and 1/3 leaf mould. Where should I take loam from? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Thank you nevertheless! Alex

  • @GardenOrganic
    @GardenOrganic2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Alex. Loam is soil which has a nice even mix of sand, silt and clay particles. It can be taken from your garden soil, as long as your soil isn't really heavy clay, otherwise you may struggle. Traditionally, people have created a loam pile by digging up grass and turf, turning it grass side down, making several layers, then covering it with tarpaulin. This takes at least a year to break down, but as the grass breaks down, it releases nutrients into the soil. This may not be practical for everybody, but it is a great use of the turf if you are creating a new border. I have also found that the piles created by moles works really well, as they have cultivated it for you. If you can't source either of these, you could buy in garden top-soil, making sure it has been certified to BS3882 standard (most has). Loam will almost certainly have weed seeds in, so it is fine for using as a potting compost if you don't mind weeding it occasionally but is not very practical for using in seed composts. Hope this helps!
