As a newbie to drawing techniques, I feel like I struck gold. Thanks David for the tutorial!
The master has spoken again, again wonderful tutorial master Finch
Probably the best and most concise breakdown of comic book composition theory I’ve ever had the pleasure of viewing! David Finch is an invaluable source for any aspiring comic book artist. Wow! Just wow!!! Thank you David Finch.
Finch : recommends books Me : i recommend finch
What’s immediately cool about this is it shows that your subjects can tell a complete story just through combinations of shapes. People use shape and geometry or math in writing or photography or any area of art. Even if you don’t have an idea or a story, what you make fit to the shapes will tell a story and you just have to decide if that fits the environment the work is going into in a way you like. As he said, it can be hard to conform a subject within a boundary, but one thing you can do if something feels off when you’re not using guidelines is to apply guidelines. You can do that directly on the page or within an app with an overlay. If you’re using paper for example, you could get some see through film sheets and draw on them with a dry erase marker. Also, 100 bullets although a bit dated is an awesome series even if you don’t like comics. Always thought it should be adapted to tv.
I’ve had “How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way” since I was a kid. It made my middle school doodles more interesting.
Man this is a great tutorial...and the way you used the tutorial to breakdown and explain what's happening in the examples that you showed in the end was ..... a pro educational art KZreadr move 🍀well done 🍀
David isn't just great Artist, he is also a great Teacher! Love your Tutorials 👍
Thank. You. I have been beating myself over the head trying to figure out this composition thing. No matter what I tried everyone I watched was like "rule of thirds, rule of thirds" and like, I get that part. But using shapes for composition is something I've seen NO ONE else talk about. My brain kept rebelling, because I would look at a picture and be like "...that's not rule of thirds, but it looks good. Why can't I do that instead?" So really, thank you. Learning you can use shapes for composition and framing to help direct the eye has just opened a whole new world for me.
I love how I just received Framed Ink yesterday and today I see it mentioned in this video. Best coincidence!!!! The video is also incredible, on the spot and straight to the point! I love your content and your tutorials! Thank you!!!
I can’t thank you enough for how your tutorials really improved my drawing skills! David is a true legend by doing this all for free, just for the sake of teaching!
Dear David, you are not just an master artist but a master teacher as well . Thank you for all your wonderful tutorials .
These Guidelines And Tips Are One Of The Best On The Tube In My Opinion. 👌☺️🎉
Wow! I'm just beginning to learn how to draw and have heard so many people talk about Composition, but had no idea what it meant. I've been looking for a means (I'm a 'visual' learner) on how to incorporate it. I want to thank you for your videos as they are done in a very helpful way. I can see how you are doing things and it helps me understand visually how things can be done. It helps me process the instructions better. I deeply appreciate your channel. I did go into Amazon and buy the two books you recommended. Again, thanks can't even begin to cover it.
Made my life so much easier
Aye, another new video by the comic artist himself, David Finch! I always enjoy these videos you make dude! Hopefully your day is going well
Amazing. Best explanation on composition I have watched on KZread period! I'm gonna order that framed ink book soon. Thank you!
I couldn't watch this video until now, and this subject was one of my requests. Thank you so much for providing these advices and skills! The examples used at the end of the video and resources for more detailed information were simply amazing!
This video should be a staple on anyone's list. Thank you for breaking composition down so simply. Hopefully we can get a few more expanding on the topic
exactly 12 am in 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭❤️, thanks for this dave ❤️
Your so incredibly helpful to me during this time. I'm trying to get into art again and these videos are so helpful. Fortunately I have the two books you mentioned, time to pick them up👍
Every lesson is pure gold....this channel is the top notch in comic book art learning...for an amateur like myself i cant ask for more. Thanks a lot for sharing so much knowledge in just a few minutes span.
Wow absolutely fantastic video/tutorial! Thank you Mr Finch! Loved the showing of examples at the end. Really helps.
Thanks so much for the tutorial. This was very helpful and fun to watch. I always get the most informative tutorials from David Finch. Such a simple idea but helps with creating dynamic art.
Wow the rule of thirds really works dude
I love the examples! thank you so much Mr Finch!
a brilliant craftsman with great content, thank you
Of all the videos I've seen about art this has been one of the most helpful, thank you
What you're showing us is fantastic and what I need more of.
This was incredible, thanks David. I look at comic panels in a whole different light now, wow. Extremely helpful.
Thank you for this! I’ve been using the rule of thirds without actually understanding from comics but from film aspect (thinking of it as a camera). But now I understand what it is I’ve been doing instinctively...and now with this lesson in my arsenal I feel I can convey some story elements much better in sequential work!! 🍀Thank you again 🍀
Finally something that will not make my drawing look boring anymore
After the cover teased in this weeks live stream and the end of this video, zombie tutorial is a must! Keep up the good work Mr.Finch
David thank you so much for making this difficult subject easy to understand
I have all Marcos Framed books. They are profoundly great.
Excellent video. It's such a basic subject to understand but so easy to forget when composing a panel. Great job.
I look forward to seeing you expand on composition later. Very helpful video.
Thank you very much for all your advice and technics! Awesome !
I love these "How to" videos. I'd like to see more of what you presented at the end by showing real examples and then deconstructing them back down to their basics. It felt rushed at the end doing it and I think the principles would affix more in the learner's mind if more time was spent there. This also will alleviate your stress of having to draw so many roughly rough sketches :) Thank you for taking time to create these.
Love frazetta's art. Helps inspire my writing.
Wow .... Your videos are just amazing Iam addicted to Monday night drawww 😘
Really awesome tutorial!
Thanks for the video. I love the breakdown of other artists of using composition the rule of thirds.
Excellent tutorial. couldn't gotten better. Thanks for this David.
Great tutorial! 😀👍
Life changing concepts

This is an amazing video David..a always draw instinctively but that changes everything..thank you so much!!👍👍👍
Finally i found this technique...thank you sir 👍👍
Great work on the edits!!!! Your vids are getting better & better! I appreciate the tutorial! Ill be watching one a few times!😊🔥
Great stuff!!! I used to do photography and the same rules apply...rule of thirds and leading lines...but the triangle and combining different shapes is going to be super helpful going forward.
I used to draw comic characters a lot while I was younger. I know the basics but watching these videos has improved my skills so much more. I'm working on my signature best piece but need a good idea for my design/ background/ characters
Oh tysm! I really love your tutorials, they are so motivational and helpful! ❤️
Thank You! I've learned a lots
I feel like this is an extension of my class with Klaus Janson! He also had us read Framed Ink and we’ve been talking about composition for months! I feel like I should be paying you $40,000 a year lol
YES! Finally a good tutorial on composition! once again, AWESOME VID DAVID!
Phenomenal video my friend. Who else tried to remove the broken graphite from the paper? LoL
Awesome!! Thanks for making this video
Great solid foundation teaching. I always need to restudy the basics as I tend to get into wing it mode in my work more often then not without setting the foundation sometimes.
Thanks for this video, man! Really great content!
Wow! You are the master ...thank you so much👍👍👍
Very cool break down. I will get those books to learn more advanced compositions but this was something yo use for rough drafts when I story broad. Thanks!
Easily the best video of composition so far on KZread and I'm only 7 minutes in.
This is Awesome❤ thanks for the tutorial Dave.
you are such a great teacher!!!! I devour your videos just like I do your art! ty man
This was so helpful for me! Thanks!
Another great video, thank you! It’s very helpful.
Amazing lesson! Thank you so much!
It would be really interesting a page & panels composition video. How many panels are "too many" for each page? How much text should or shouldn't be and how to place them in the correct position without hiding the most important areas of the art? What is the criteria behind panels size? If you open a comicbook, there are two pages (left and right) how to make the composition of both pages to be in visual harmony? because when you draw a page you must have in mind that the reader will watch both of them together. A comicbook is not a secuence of individual illustrations, they must be connected and showed in an efficient way.
This is such an excellent video with great examples and reference images.
Thanks for this video! This is exactly what my drawings need to improve!
Tell people to distill the composition from printed images using tracing paper overlays. So much to mention and learn about composition !!
This, for me is one oe hardes topics. Thanks for explain a bit more. I'm starting understanding now.
The thing with composition is anything goes really, what I mean by that as an illustrator we could practice for years in the western understanding of composition, but when we look at the art work from other countries and cultures other than the Western artistic mould such as the art of Japan and China they have a tradition dating back thousands of years of using empty space in the compositional artwork, from silk screens to large murals and panels and wood block printing that is a mastery of large areas of empty negative space, so unless your working in the very specific narrow Field of Western comic art then composition is a very flexible concept.
This is clearly understand!! Nice work!!
Great video and teaching. you are really good at communicating artistically to us artist. thanks.
Very useful. Thanks!
Thanks. Creating a composition is one of the toughest challenges I find in painting.
Love it.thanks for this free lesson
Love it!!! This helped me so much!!! Thank you, I already have How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way, and that book helped me a lot
Your tutorial are great!
This seems like a real great video! Not gonna watch it yeat because I'm drawing along your caricatures video, but definitely will help me a lot with learning comics!
YES, THE WHOLE FRAMED SERIES!! Sorry for all caps, but the whole library is unmatched in IMHO, textbooks really. I wish I had them sooner in my own development. A great companion to your videos which I enjoy and learn a lot from as well :)
I checked the Thesaurus and there aren't enough positive words in the English language to describe how great your channel is. Do these composition rules extend to designing an entire page?
Thank you.
Fibonacci's spiral (based on the golden ratio) is also a great tool of composition.
So helpful! Thanks!
Omg Thanks you are really hitting the good topics!
Now this is something new and awesome 😎
very helpful, thank you!
the fact that this video is free
wow, helped me so much! Thank you, for real
This guy can doodle better than I can draw. He's like "Okay, I'm just going to sketch a basic figure". By comparison, I would call that my masterpiece.
brilliant breakdown...
It would have been GREAT if I had any verbal instruction any decades ago. BLESS YOU !
thats what i needed, thank u Man ur a really good teacher
