Composites and Solving your animation Z problems

Фильм және анимация

Are your limbs always cutting through is crazy places? Or are you trying to wrap your characters arms around someone but it just wont seem do go where you need it to go? You probably have bitmap problems.
I talk about some of the common issues that cause Z problems, and some of the ways you can try to solve them.
If you want more info on layering, and how the composite and Z axis work together check out this video:

    This is such a great video and also one of the worst source of problems in toonboom rigs. Thanks for tackling it!I wished you'd talk a bit about the rightmost ordering stuff as well which creates a lot of problems where an animator moves an element and suddenly the rest follows, just because that element happens to be at the left of some composite somewhere. I believe it also impacts pass through composites which is madness, but hey, it's toonboom. Thanks for having the most informative and well constructed toonboom chanel on the internet!

    The good thing about harmony's buggyness is it's very consistent lol. Once you get in tune with it's diva qualities it's great. It's worth the effort.

    Hi ! Thx so much for all yours videos ^^ Do you have any solution for Z problem when you use "image switch" node... Cauz' I notice this node works "as bitmap" like the composite option....

  • @StylusRumble

    @StylusRumble

    5 жыл бұрын

    There are a few nodes like the image switch that are bitmap nodes. I will either use a bunch of image switches above the composites - or as high as they need to be to not mess up the Z depth we need, and link them all to one switch. You can find more info on linking and switches here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYZttcl9nq3fhqw.html Also you can try a pair of transparencies so one becomes visible as the other becomes invisible. Or some kind of transparency + cutter combo so it can be controlled with drawing substitutions.

    Is there a way to make a peg in one frame be forward then the next frame the peg can go behind. I'm trying to to make a head turn around and having problems with the ear.

  • @StylusRumble

    @StylusRumble

    3 жыл бұрын

    You do that using the Z axis and moving it back and forward in space. The easiest way to do this is to use your coordinates and control points tab. It will show you where things are located in z-depth

  • @DanzyRemix
    @DanzyRemix2 жыл бұрын

    for some weird reason all my comps are passthrough since the begining and i push a ear up in z-depth, it stays behind. and once i go to the perspective view the ear is in front and in the camera view the ear is behind while the rest of the head details are set in 0 z-depth.

    Does it work in the render view? sometimes cutters or other nodes will effect the way it displays in the camera view. Other fx nodes can mess up z too.

    hi.. when I give tween between two keys which both have same z info, in that tweening area z info changes automatically. Can you help me to solve it??

  • @StylusRumble

    @StylusRumble

    Жыл бұрын

    it's possible there's some weird tweening in there. Especially if you're using a 3D peg. If it's seperate you can set the Z path to stop-motion keyframe (right click and select "set stop-motion keyframe or Ctrl +L) If you are using 3D pegs it's a lot tricker to fix this. You're probably better adding a Z peg set to separate. just to track levels.

    Thank you! I noticied that when i use an image-Switch node, it flatten my composite even if it's set as pass through. Is there a way to avoid that? I like to Have a pair of legs with pivot from top to bottom and another inverted for planting foot. ( and switch them when needed) I also would love to know how to use motion blur in toon boom, have never been able to do it correctly with rotating stuff. I watch some shows that blurs the previous 1-2 frames in fast movement. don't know how they do that the easy way Thank you for all your video master stylus! :)

  • @StylusRumble

    some nodes are bitmap nodes. So they will flatten everything just like a bitmap composite. If you need to retain the Z axis and use an image switch, you may try using multiple image switches and linking the control to a single one, or creating an external switch for all the nodes. This video should help if you don't know how to link stuff. : kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYZttcl9nq3fhqw.html

  • @StylusRumble

    @StylusRumble

    @@DanzyRemix - It will follow what it's attached to. If you need shading on a part that goes behind- like an arm, you need to put the shading in the arm group. This can get really tricky when moving things behind/ahead, because of the bitmap composites. If you're going that complex, it's better to work with a completed scene, and problem solve each issue as it comes up.
