I’m so glad someone finally reacted to Coil. I wish more did. There is such a vast discography I can’t really give a great next point for you to listen to.

Coil always deserves more attention, I got the Ape of Naples tattooed on my shoulder, the chaos sun on my chest and an original tattoo mixed of an owl and broccoli on my left shoulder ( based on Broccoli from Songs to play in the dark 1 and the song with the boiled owl)

Thank you for picking Coil for this week! Ever since I started watching your videos I wanted to see you react to one of their songs, and finally there was a theme week that fit their musical style! The album, from which I picked this song (The Ape of Naples), was produced after vocalist's, Jhonn Balance, tragic death. All of the vocals used for that album were recorded between '93 and '04 either in studio or on their live shows. I think the vocals were mixed in this way for an artistic intent- to indicate that Jhonn is singing from his afterlife. Like you said, it gives off this lethargic, sombre atmosphere, which in my opinion kind of resembles a funeral. The use of marimba, synthesizer, weird vocals samples and other instruments create this 'quirky' (?) vibe that is basically inimitable - I still have to witness a musical project with similiar sound. After Jhonn's death in 2004, Coil disbanded at height of their musical prowess. The album was "posthumously" released year later and to this day it stands as a monument to one of the greatest groups of the Industrial/Electronic scene. If I had to recommend any songs by Coil for next reaction, it would be: Ostia (The Death of Pasolini), Fire of the Mind & Going Up. The latter two are from the same album as Tattooed Man is, but they greatly differ in style. You won't find the same formulaic song produced by them in any of their records. They keep it fresh, tight and straight to the point

Coil were pioneers in the use of samples and what we consider "industrial" music today. This may actually be one of their more conventional songs. I'm definitly curios to see how react to some of their other stuff. I'd recommend "Are you shivering?"

Throbbing Gristle were the first real pioneers of industrial music. Coil just built on the foundation that TG created and further evolved the genre. Both are great bands.

This album is nuts, and made even stranger once you know that the frontman, Jhonn Balance, died before it was released. This track in particular always makes me think of aggressive melancholy, like a dog laying outside on a sweltering day in the shade of an awning and lazily, grumpily snapping at passerby

Coil is an absolutely wild band to dig into. I've been aware of them since I was a teenager in the 90s, but I really only started to appreciate them more all these years later as an adult -- their compositions are elaborate, Jhonn Balance's vocals are haunting as hell, and Sleazy was just a genius.

The accordion is used by a few rock bands, They Might Be Giants and Stolen Babies come to mind. Igorrr uses it in "Cheval". Nice to see some industrial on the channel, maybe we'll see Severed Heads or Cabaret Voltaire someday? So much music, so little time.

Lol - I'm late to the show, by what? three years? You've reviewed some Coil...why am I not surprised? I bought their album Gold is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders) when it came out in 1987. I'm guessing it was was one of the earliest releases as it was both on clear vinyl, but had a 45 rpm enclosed with "The Wheel" on side A, and "The Wheal" on side B. "The First Five Minutes After Violent Death" the layering and sound choices are really astounding, especially in the use of winds (French horns?), and tuned percussion in the form of marimbas, and some others. I played it for my younger sister on a whim when she came to visit. I wanted to know what kind of music she thought it was. Her response was - "this is music for musicians...never going to get radio play." Lol. I have all their vinyl up through their rendition of Tainted Love. Loved your review here. Got me to sub, even though you caught my attention by some more recent reviews.

Ah, finally we get to the good stuff haha. I love Coil, can't believe no one else suggested this. Now you just have to revisit Swans one day, soundtracks for the blind is great and all but probably the wrong choice for a one-off review without context.

They made their own instruments that mixes old world instrumentation. Coil comes from other old school REAL industrial bands and also an art commune called COUM transmissions. And have said many times... they are actually anti-music and want to create something different every "song". So you will not hear a lot of these elements from this track in other tracks of theres. So it is a very interesting discography they've made from the 80s til early 2000s. Definitely worth checking out Horse Rotorvator, Ape of Naples, Musick to play in the Dark 1&2, Scatology, Anal Staircase... everything sounds very original imho.

As far as I can tell this is the only Coil reaction video. Really, the most amazing music, but repetition is part of the industrial movement. The album Horse Rotorvator as a whole is something I would love to watch you experience.

I love their song Tiny Golden Books. It's quite a long one and not much (or any, depending on your ears) singing, but isn't as repetitive as this one (and many others). Slur is another one I like that has more drama in it. I saw your reaction to Neurosis (Stones from the Sky), btw, a while ago, where you seemed quite disappointed with the repetitiveness. It seems that this time it didn't really bother you as much. Either way I enjoy your reactions, and still hope to get some more Blind Guardian, preferably their orchestral song "In The Red Dwarf's Tower"!

Always good to see diversity. Industrial music in general is underappreciated I feel. As some others have said, I would recommend some of Coil's other work, which is less conventional. In fact, their work on the Hellraiser soundtrack (which was rejected, but released by them anyway) might be right up your alley. :) link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/a46HmceGj5DQdaQ.html

Great Coil song to do. "Cold Cell" would be good. They spent decades working on these songs. The singer was an occultist with schizophrenia and the other was an electronic music genius from Throbbing Gristle. This music is about grief and it was the era of AIDS and lots of their friends died.

Sorry man.. but I can't hear any waltz-tempo at all in that beginning. A slow 4/4 is all I can hear. It's funny cause you usually make me hear some odd times I didn't hear before, but this time I'm pretty sure there wasn't any. Anyways, this was a cool song although a bit too repetitive for me (nudge, nudge... 😉)

And on the accordeon as usually a sad/melancholic instrument; in Sweden it's kind of a "folk-instrument", often played in merry gatherings (apart from also beeing the poetic moodmaker for melacholy). The kind you can see in this example video of players gathered playing, is more used in Swedish "common peoples" music than in more "artsy settings".
