Complete landing in severe turbulence and wind at London Gatwick on British Airways

Complete landing in severe turbulence and wind at London Gatwick #airport on #britishairways
This was my plane trip, which became my nightmare. Turbulence started over the English Channel. Gradually it was stronger and stronger until the #landing
At 10:00 minutes you can see clearly that it is strong wind
I think excellent pilots with very good reflexes just before touching the ground

That’s how pilots need to land in crosswinds, it’s called the crab method. Depending on where the crosswind is, they land facing into the crosswind first with 1 rear gear, then the second rear gear touches down, and lastly the nose touches down and they add rudder input. it helps them gain more control and prevents the crosswinds from completely shoving you off the runway. so yes, excellent pilots indeed for doing their job right!

Ever noticed that despite the ‘scary title’ it’s awlays ok? I’ve been a flight attendant for 20 years....can you just imagine the turbulence stories I could tell you? The point I’d rather make is that I’m still here....so please let’s not be scared of turbulence, it’s a part of flying, it’s normal, it’s been engineered for way beyond what us common folk can imagine!!!

I had a landing like this once on an Air France flight into CDG on an Airbus 319. It’s always unnerving when you see that wing dip right before touchdown. The hardest landing I ever had was into LGA on a Delta 757-300. The pilot set that one down very hard.

No matter how often I travel by plane, fear is something I will never overcome. I've had great and smooth flights, and I've had not so minor events that even scared the pilots. Last year in Mexico city, there was a major storm while the plane was attempting to land and one of the pilots was trying to give us some information when the plane was suddenly hit by wind and he cut the message, then the lightning system started failing and I saw the crew running to get their seats and belts fastened. I usually calm myself watching them because they're the experts 🤣 if they're not worried, I try not to worry either... But they seemed scared and therefore I've never been so terrified in my life. that day we had 2 attempts before the successful one and it was awful. It was not easy to stop the plane with all the water and wind, the airport had closed while we were flying, and other flights got cancelled but we were already flying and we had nowhere else to go that had better conditions.

Hi Shirley - easier said than done, I know, but please try not to worry (unless the announcement is “brace brace brace”, in which case, sure, worry a bit). But if the pilot comes over the PA to say “ladies and gentlemen, we’re going to be going through a patch of rough air momentarily”, that means that the pilot is in communication with both the ground, and (via the ATC) with pilots in the airspace immediately ahead of you. The pilot ahead is relaying weather and turbulence to the ATC, who is advising your pilot, who’s advising you - that there’s a bit of gravel on the road up ahead, so it’ll be bumpy for a bit. Think of it like road tripping with friends and getting a call from your buddy telling you there’s a speed-trap a few km ahead that he just passed. As for turbulence - just ensure your seatbelt is securely fastened at all times during the flight, and you’ll be okay! Turbulence doesn’t hurt; hitting the ceiling sure does!

Nice vide. No severe, occasional moderate. Check the descriptions of turbulence with the EASA or the FAA; "large and abrupt attitude changes", and "airplane momentarily out of control". The airplane's attitude was steady, with minor attitude variations. The trailing edge flaps seemed to fluctuate- they don't do that so I'm guessing it was due to window distortion of the image. Cheers

All if a sudden we fell out if the sky. Trays, people and all not secured hit the ceiling. That happened two or three times. That bird made it to SEATAC with no problems. this is turbulent but routine landing that one can get into in strong sidewinds - unless you are lucky enough to have them right on the nose. there are limits to windspeed and you may have to go around or go to an alternate airport.

Mr Paul that is true i agree in that regard but sometimes i think people forget that they are in a metal tube designed to cruise at approx 500mph and at roughly 40,000 feet in the air. The air is very very different up there and having pockets of air which can cause up draft or down draft is just part of putting said aircraft in that position. I can assure anybody that is scared of turbulence/flying that these planes are put through stress tests which go well beyond any turbulence ever recorded. I know it's unsettling and an alien feeling to us as day to day we experience nothing even similar. Enjoy your flight cos as far as i am concerned my holiday starts when i step foot on that plane, hope this helps a little. 🌍🛫✈️🛬🌞🍹🌴💯

landing in crosswinds is a problem on some days in the uk because of strong west sw winds. everyone wants to land on time and a go around means about 45 minutes delay so one tries to avoid a goaround. plus fuelexpenditure, of course so thats about 0.75 x 2950 litres per engine e.g for a 737. nasty crosswinds are a challenge no one likes.
