I remember being in a Jetblue ERJ-190 when there was severe turbulence during approach due to a passing storm... I've never seen a plane's wing flex so much, and we were pretty much being tossed around the cabin as we descended (unfortunately some people couldn't hold in their upset stomachs). Saw the flight path afterwards and the plane made a pretty interesting shape lol. It's always funny how calm the flight attendants are, that's when you know you're probably going to be alright!

Ladies and gentlemen! Introducing a whole new series to the channel. It’s called The Short Clip. This is something I have been meaning to do for a long time. Sometimes I get good footage, that just doesn’t fit into any episode. Sometimes I feel like a moment is so special that it needs its own video. I also understand that most people don’t have time to watch a full one hour long Inflight Series episode. So, from now on I’ll be posting these “short clips” of footage that I deem as important enough to have its own short video. For those of you who do enjoy watching my full-length videos, do not fear, The Short Clip videos will not replace any of the five regular videos that I upload every week. These will be completely separate and will be posted at varying times. There will be no set upload schedule for them. They will basically be “in addition to” the five regular videos you see every week. With that being said you guys get a real treat today! For the first ever Short Clip episode you get to see a very intense aborted landing/diversion while attempting to beat a thunderstorm into Joplin, MO on a American Eagle ERJ-175! Enjoy!

KZread's algorithm decided that I should watch this video. Wow!! Those T-storm clouds were Holy Shit Dark!! Looked like they may have been tornado forming clouds. The big clue is if they have spikes on the top of the thundercloud and are on the back side. Back in 1972, I was in a DC-10 going to West Palm Beach and we went thru thunderstorms. I saw lightning hit the wing of the plane. The drafts were tossing our plane around wildly. This was after our flight was already delayed because of a bomb scare on the aircraft. I was 13 back then going to see my grandmother for spring break. Later that week, we flew up to Disney World for a few days on a 2-engine prop plane. On the return flight back down to PBI, we went thru some serious thunderstorm clouds and it was tossing our plane around like you wouldn't believe. Excellent job by the pilot of your aircraft!

This was the moment PIC made the decision to abort landing as he/she realized that the plane isn't in full control due to bad weather. Given the visual signs and probably prior knowledge from other pilots/atc that conditions can be bad during landing, pilots were defo ready for this scenario.

a very similar experience happened to my family and I when attempting to land at Sky Harbor airport in AZ, at the exact time a Haboob was hitting the city and the storm was said to be the worst in 20 years........after three aborted landing attempts, we diverted to Tuscon for the night......there is no way to explain the terrifying feeling of severe turbulence , that is steadily increasing as the plane nears the ground........was never so glad to land and thanked the pilot for getting us safely down as I walked off ...... the pilot was very professional and said he tried his best but couldn't do it........others were unhappy we landed in Tuscon, but I told the Captain he made the right decision in getting us safely on the ground......thank you again sir, if you happen to read this......

@@sla31 - you can tell at 2:20 that there's some serious change in airspeed by listening to the engines oscillating in power. The pilots were having continuous trouble with controlling airspeed including TONS of manual input to the vertical stabilizer, ailerons and the rudder. Incredible job keeping the camera steady throughout all of that heavy turbulence!

Definitely was a good decision. That's what pilots are trained for though! There is a reason the FAA is so strict when it comes to pilot training. I have my private license, and I know you are going through the process of getting your licenses, so we know what it takes to get to this level. Also, this shows first hand how wind shear is a scary thing, and we definitely had our fair share of it here. Also, I just messaged you on Facebook from my personal account. I had one bad landing at Toronto International on a 747-200, (British Airways), and that was bad enough because that is a massive aircraft. We didn't abort, although it was the roughest landing I ever had. I had sympathy for people landing in smaller aircraft. A mile from the end of the runway at 1000ft we dropped 500ft and powered-up and climbed back up to the Glide-Slope. When we finally landed we were on 100% reverse thrust and I never saw an aircraft stop so quickly. As we walked into the terminal, I realized that we had to fly back to London. Walking on the ground never felt so good.

They always remember Delta flight 191 at DFW Airport, the accident that led to so many improvements in windshear and microburst detection technology, not to mention crew resource management. I was a reporter for Aviation Daily at that time and I'll never forget hearing about what happened. Unfortunate, but at least some very good technology was invented as a result of that horrible tragedy.

  • @mazatano

Jim Brown...I was on an American Airlines flight into DFW back in 1988 that was an eerie reminder of Flight 191. We were on the same flight path into DFW that Delta 191 had flown (crossing Hwy 114). We had been flying in a thunderstorm for about 15 minutes before landing. The captain came on the intercom and told us that it was going to be a rough landing. The thunderstorm seemed to intensify as we approached the airport and the wind started to whip the Boeing 727 around similar to the video above. The plane kept banking hard to either the right or left, alternatively as we neared the runway. I thought we were going to crash for sure. When we landed, the plane hit the runway so hard that it felt like the landing gear was going to come through the fuselage. It violently shook the entire airplane. It was by far the scariest flight I have ever been on. All of us passengers were amazed that the pilot was able to get that plane on the ground safely. Right after we landed they diverted all remaining flights until the storm passed. I don't know why the pilot didn't do a go-around. Perhaps because the weather was just too rough to even try to abort the landing? Right after we arrived at the terminal there was a funnel cloud spotted near the airport. :O

I made a bad decision to take off from FXE (Ft Laud Exec) in a PA28 Warrior in bad weather and was VFR. The current weather was a squall line of T-storms that extended from approx. 60mi ssw of Key West to just outside of JAX. I wanted to see family in Venice Fl. so I watched for a break in the line of storms. Well after about minutes I saw my break. Approx miles or so past Ft Laud I saw a gap and told my wife I could navigate between storms approx. 2500to 2900 feet AGL. The cell on the left was non-convective and the one on the right was. I figured if I "skirted" the left cell I could get past the weather and go on my way. So like an idiot I took off. At approx. 2500 ft with full power, back pressure and a climb out rate of a whopping 500 fpm I noticed my VSI reading Negative 2500 fpm. I was in a full blown microburst and was well aware of what was happening to the aircraft. I had never experienced the phenomena but having studied DL191 I had insight as to what to do. I kept power and pushed the yoke to wings level and rode it out. By Gods grace I had enough altitude and after approx. 15 to 20 seconds came out of the microburst. Although I had time and altitude on my side I learned a very valuable lesson from the flight. I must digress that I love poor weather flying on commercial A/C however not in a Piper Cherokee. The convective cell was very impressive as you could see the entire infrastructure of the massive storm every time the lightning flashed. I easily could have been Gator food had I been just a few hundred feet lower.
