You missed a key bit - the ticket you got is rechargeable. That's what the machine asked about having a Renfe y tu card, whether you want to reuse an existing physical ticket, and you pay an extra 50 cents if it issues a new ticket. I believe you can just tap on/tap off with your contactless card at the barrier without having to use the machine.

Hey @nothernanorak thanks for your comment, yes you are correct about the reusable Renfe card. Once you get the Renfe card it can be re-used for other trips, this was the first I had ever used the train in Spain! With regards to the tap on/tap off card at the barrier, like we have in London/Oyster, I'm not familiar with this option. I will be back in Spain later this year so happy to test/do a new video showing this in action. Thanks so much for the insights!!!

@@domi376999 good question, I've not bought tickets via the Renfe app before, so I'm not 100% sure. I think you should be able to simply show the QR ticket to a staff member who can open the gate. Don't recall the gates having optical readers. If anyone in the community knows, do let us know here please. Might be worth printing ticket, in the event the phone battery goes, just in case, hope this helps!

@@domi376999 Yes, there should be an option to print tickets once at the station via a machine or manned booth, at most stations
