I hear that you have some background noise. It could be caused by your mic settings on your computer. At the mic/speaker options you go into advanced settings and maybe you have your Hz set to low or too high for your microphones. :p

hi Adam, First let me say that your videos are all very well recorded and sound great. However I thought I should comment on a few things. First, a large diameter condenser does not pick up more low end. They're have less self-noise and can add more colour to the sound, sometimes perceived as a lushness or fullness which is attractive on some lower resonant instruments. But they don't pick up more low end. They're based on an older design and were used exclusively along with dynamic and ribbon mics until the late 1950's when solid state technology allowed for a much smaller microphone. Here's an explanation from Neumann, manufacturer of high end microphones: "Large diaphragm condenser microphones shape the sound in a pleasing way; it just feels great to hear your own voice on your headphones. A good large diaphragm condenser makes you want to sing, because it sounds like you … on a record! Also, many vocalists like the sheer size of a large diaphragm microphone, because it gives them something to focus on, in absence of an audience. Apart from vocals and spoken word, large diaphragm microphones are often used for solo instruments to make them appear vibrant, rich, and “larger than life.” Small diaphragm condensers are your best choice when you want to capture the pure and natural sound, without added flavors. No other type of microphone will give you a more detailed sound image. Because of their neutral sound, high quality small diaphragm microphones can be used for almost anything. In pop music, small diaphragm microphones are typically used for piano, acoustic guitar and other stringed instruments as well as drums (overheads, snare, hi-hat, cymbals) and percussion. Small diaphragm microphones can have excellent low end response and can also be used for bass instruments, although most pop engineers prefer the extra “lushness” of a large diaphragm microphone for bass-heavy sources. Sound engineers who record classical music use small diaphragm condensers almost exclusively. Because of their consistent pickup patterns, small diaphragm condensers are excellent to capture choirs, ensembles and orchestra in stereo (or even surround)." As far as mic placement goes, there are many ways to record a stereo image, xy being one of about 5 arrays for a cardiod pair of mics, and I agree that experimenting is the best way to go. The spaced pair array that you use would normally be a good array for 2 omni mics, but is also used a lot for drum kit overheads and room mixing. Strictly speaking it's not a true stereo image, but for a lot of things, including marimba and piano it sounds great.

Nice job on the vids man! Thanks for putting a modern twist on the youtube marimba scene! I use an XY config, but I do it under the marimba. You get a lot of resonance from the resonators and not as much bar contact sound which I find that mics really exaggerate. It also looks good from an audience perspective. As far as phase cancellation of the spaced pairs, this isn't an issue if you're listening with earbuds or headphones, and it's minimal when listening to speakers. HOWEVER many smaller devices (phones etc) mix to mono when you don't have headphones plugged in. This makes audio from spaced pairs sound really thin as you play bars that are closer to one mic or the other due to the phase cancellation. Of course one could argue that if anyone is watching marimba vids on a phone speaker, they aren't getting a good experience anyways :) Anyhow, keep up the good work!

Hey, just wanted to say that your channel is great and professional. I started percussion half a year ago fro my symphonic wind band because there was only one percussionist (the drummer - oh the life of a percussionist *facepalm*). Jordan Yatckoske Thanks for watching! I still use Van Sice 2344 a lot for most of my playing but if it's something I'm unsure about then I use the zeltsman GRADB set. Yes I want both of those on the show for sure! Hopefully I can get enough patrons to buy more mallets ahaha

Honestly I think any cables are fine, just make sure you get long enough ones and the ends preferably made of metal so they won’t bend! Mine are way too short ahaha... thank you for watching!

Nice video Adam. I was however expecting to see an example of your marimba recording at the end, so was a little disappointed. I still appreciated all the technical information, and hope I can use some of your ideas to mic my xylophone in a live setting as well as studio.

Hey Adam, I am going to be performing Dream of the Cherry blossoms and I was wondering if you'd recommend the zeltsman graduated set for that piece? Or if you had any other suggestions.

Jacob Eckart Great piece! I think the zeltsman grad would be alright but you might get something better from a 4332/4322 style setup (zeltsman grad is 4321)!

Great video! I know a lot of people are unsure about recording marimba, I had to learn from experimenting with my gear. This will be helpful for everyone I'm sure! Do you record any of your pieces from things like your recital for personal videos?

If I recorded with one condenser mic. through a simpler interface do you think I'd still get decent quality? If so where would you suggest I place the mic? I hope you can answer my question, thanks!! Gina Clef Thanks for the question and for watching! that's fair enough, if you got one larger condenser and a one channel interface you could still get some decent results, I'd put it above the marimba in the middle 😀 Although, it might be better to buy a portable recorder like the ZOOM H4n or TASCAM DR 05 which has everything in one with two condensers built in and a portable recording solution 😀 Way cheaper too! I'd hook that up the same way, above the marimba in the middle.

Great video! Answered just about every question I had. I just wasn't sure about one thing, and it may be a stupid question: If you buy two of the audio interfaces, can they work together? I don't really know much about this stuff. Thanks for the help!

Not a stupid question at all, I thought the same too at first 😅 In most cases your computer can only recognise one interface at a time so there's no point in having more than one. If you want more inputs you have to buy a bigger audio interface unfortunately 😶

You mentioned that condenser microphones are not used in the live performance but this not true at all. Drumcorp events like DCI , WGI and a lot of highschool marching band pit use condenser microphones to mic the pit.

That is true, events where they want superior sound quality will use condensers - but generally speaking a lot of concert environments will prefer dynamics for their ruggedness :)

Great video, Adam! I would also add that it’s also not accurate that dynamic mics aren’t used for recording. Most engineers use dynamic mics on snare drums, Tom’s, and kicks. Dynamics are also often used to mic guitar and bass cabs for recording. Large diaphragm dynamics are often used to record vocals too. I agree that dynamics wouldn’t be my first choice for recording marimba, but it’s important not to over generalize. Also, there’s no mention of ribbon mics. With the right preamps, they can be an awesome choice for recording marimba.

Also, if you don’t want to contribute to the evil empire which is Behringer, you could get a pair of Audio Technica Pro 37’s. They usually go for less than $100 used and you won’t be damaging your soul. The Oktava mk012’s are another great budget choice, as are MXR 604’s.

Would the Blue Snowball be a good mic?

It's not bad for its price as a first mic, but definitely more suited to vocal applications than instrumental in the long run :)

Um... no. That Behringer C-2’s pickup pattern is a supercardioid. Not a cardioid. If it was a cardioid, the little mushroom’s stem would be missing. -as shown in your diagram-

On a budget? If you’re watching this then chances are you have a marimba (I don’t) Then again I guess you are on a budget since you spent your life savings on a marimba
