Oh my goodness! Your video was so informational and helpful! I have got two wild and unruly tomato plants that are going to need to be pruned. As soon as I get home, that will be my project. I remember my Dad and Granddad talking about removing the “suckers” but I have not done that yet. Oh but I will. Thanks so much for the in depth discussion on how to grow, fertilize, prune and stake tomatoes. I can’t wait to get mine in shape and to propagate new plants from the branches I remove!!

Definitely not trying to argue with you. You have by far the best how to garden videos on KZread. But I do have to say that my family has always used bailing twine to tie tomatoes and I've used it for 12 years and never had an issue with it. But you are right you need movement and that's why if you use a string that's not elastic than you should tie them a little loose.

True about single stem, but I leave mine more of a bush like, I get tons of tomatoes this way! I’ve never had any issues doing it that way! At one time I had tons of tomatoe plants and would get 20 to 30+ tomatoes a DAY! I never really ruined them except suckers! And my tomatoes are real sweet like, probably type of tomatoes I planted? I grow a LOT of grape tomatoes, sweets! I get TONS of tomatoes and every year I get more new plants just from dropping tomatoes from the year before. I drop them onto the ground when they can’t be eaten, like example a bird got to one. Right now I have a TON of tomatoes on my side growth, I don’t pick them all. Also, one year I pruned them back like you’re showing, but the plants did bad! I live in central Florida and the extra leaves help shade, but not a ton left. If it’s pruned a LOT the plants can’t survive the heat here for some reason. Leaving them extremely exposed For staking I use same stakes because it is cheap! I use yarn... yep, yarn! Never have had a problem. We can’t just push the stake in the ground, it’s to Sandy. We use a mallet and rebar to creat a hole, then put steak in. I put my stakes in when my plants are about 1/2 to 1 ft tall. This way it’s ready and doesn’t damage the roots! It’s easier that way! As the plant grows, it’s easier to tie up. Especially the ground, it’s already pretty soft from sowing. Also I put my stake just a bit closer because of it bending, not good.

Have been watching you for quite some time now and my apologies for not taking time to thumbs up. I'll go back on some and do that. I'm willing to my retirement now but my wife and I have been growing and selling tomato plants for over 20 years. You do an incredible job of explaining things in a comprehensive and concise way. You're very easy to understand and I think it's really great resource for new gardeners especially. Clearly we grow very intensive gardens are indeterminants are only 12 inches apart and when you grow over 200 plants it's a lot of work but worth every minute. We sell plants mostly tomatoes and peppers that's my specialty sometimes people are a little disappointed that they can't pick up their entire garden from me but we usually grow up about 40 varieties of tomatoes including many heirlooms and people have caught on it that's what we do. Up until 2 years ago with covid we were selling tomatoes to restaurants that business has dropped grammatically now. I will say keep up the good work I watched some of your onion videos and was impressed with the way you explained all of that. don't get me wrong I still learn some things from you so I try to watch everything you have. We are in Oregon and garden vegetables do quite well here. Organic growing but not certified we know where all of our components come from so are comfortable with the back that we have good stuff. Sounds like I'm boasting but I will add to that that everything you do goes along with what I like to see happen keep up the good work. I did notice however that when you pulled your onions from the tray ready to plant that you did not trim them down I'm sure it's not necessary but I find it helpful. Just give them a good haircut. I would like to contact you more privately sometime with some comments and questions. I really enjoyed it combined video with you in the arms family and watched the one about salmon fishing and the salmon was sent to the arms family. Here in Oregon I do a tremendous amount of salmon fishing or Chinook and coho and found that video rather interesting especially the condition that the salmon arrived. We are in our mid-70s and I wish that I knew as much as you do when I was your age. We have learned a lot by trial and error and still enjoy our garden very much.

Great info! I’m new to gardening and LOVING IT! I had no idea that we have two types of tomatoes.....DOH! I set up my bed for indeterminate growth (prior to learning the difference and actually identifying the plant I intended to place in that spot) then proceeded to trim the determinate plants as if they were indeterminate. To say they were not happy is an understatement. But much like the first child breaking in new parents, the plants are surviving. I purchased seeds and other helpful items from your website and I’m looking forward to learning more!

Just wanted to add that another easy accessible option is the thin elastic hairties at the dollar store. $1 for 100 elastics. They pull apart easily at the metal connector, so no scissors or measuring required. Just grab one, pull it apart, and tie the plant to the stake. They come in fun bright colors that can draw pollinators.

Not all yours. What you are teaching on your videos is amazing. Thanks. I'm trying to get to where my plants (tomatoes) grow lots of clusters. I have not seen single stem idea before. I've seen double stem and am doing that now. I am growing zucchini as well. I have been growing them upright to keep air flow like you have said. It's working. I agree, elastic material works best! Instead of throwing them in the trash, I reuse my old nylon pantyhose/tights that have one hole too many :) just cut them into bands, they allow the plant to sway in the wind without damaging the stem and they dry super fast even after a heavy rainfall (minimizing the possibility of blight). I make sure to pick them all up after the season's ended.

3:10 Phosphorus is going to give you the root growth your want (it speeds up root production), and the potassium is going to give you higher brix/sweeter fruit. Potassium determines "the quality" of your fruit. All plants start to deplete potassium dramatically during fruit and flowering. You have to replace that potassium, as the plant uses it up during fruit/flowering, if you want to keep high brix/sweet tasting, gorgeous looking fruit.

I’ve been trying to get more accurate info on the best ratios of N P K throughout the growing season. I’m surprised that I’m not finding more on some of these channels on this fundamental. I think your point about K is correct and my organic fertilizer has a rather low number. Curious what you might recommend for a fertilizer that has the best ratios? Thx so much.

Love this video! Last season, my tomato leaves starting having black spot and turned black, even at the very top, I didn’t know how to save it so I took them out even tho there are fruits on them already :(

I have learned so much from you! Thank you! I do have a question. I live in Washington State and summer didn't start until July and we usually have a short summer. I planted tomatoes and have a ton, but I don't think they will grow big enough and ripen. Is it too late to create a greenhouse over my garden or what should I do? I know you have million subscriber questions, but when you can, will you reply?
