[Compilation] Renovated Double Height old Japanese akiya house
We assisted teacher Baba, who purchased Akiya house, in the restoration of his old Japanese house. This is a compilation of the year-long work, which included re-covering walls and floors using Japanese carpentry skills, installing a wood stove, and renovating the house into a Double Height Living Room.

Just the skill of piecing together all the beams together and replacing the first floor is truly being a master at carpentry. Dedication to perfection is a remarkable skill and you should be proud of your amazing work. I have always admired the beauty and style of Japanese homes like this. If I had the money I would love to have one built to live in.

@@kaziyahow long will that house last? Is it fire resistant? Ants, rodents other menace resistant? Flood resistant? And most important : eavesdropping resistant or I have to whisper while inside or perhaps install some kind of anti eavesdropping technology? Isn't the house has to be the place where you will be feeling safe and enjoy the privacy at its best? Wooden houses provide that?

Traditional japanese houses are the most beautiful pieces of architecture for me.
Amazing work. That's my dream - to renovate an 江戸時代 民家 in 浜松市天竜区. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the English subtitles!
Beautiful work and beautiful house, I have lots of respect for such precise and efficient craftsmanship and it seems really fun to renovate such homes.

My goal is to buy several Akiya homes in Japan to create a retreat space for corporate individuals to unplug from their busy life style. Love to connect with these guys excellent skills and work demonstrated. Some of the best work I have seen so far of master builders of old Akiya-style homes.

From the outside the house looks like an ordinary Japanese house, but the inside is the whole different story. I kinda like the interior space which is opened through the second floor ceiling. That reminds me of a warehouse I used to live in.

I like seeing the modern tools making traditional joinery. I understand the historical importance of the joinery work and even really love the old hand tools but my body can’t handle it anymore after my spine injuries. Modern power tools are still painful but for less time. Nice work gentleman.

I love watching the skills of these master builders doing the post and beam construction work. I have a question about leaving the bare earth under the floors. I would have thought that using a vapor barrier with gravel over top to keep moisture out of the floor would help. And is the new wood under the floor treated to repel insects and termites?

I work wood for the past 55 years out of my 63:-))) and yet still love an opportunity to see a project come nice together as yours... I am very curious as to why you did not use glue ?... is it because mechanical joinery is better in earth quake area?... just very curious,,, My best wishes!... Greeting from Pensacola, FL, US

This carpentry is so hard-core! I'm a huge fan of this level of construction. This is Doing It Right™ Like the commentator said, the only thing that could be done differently is leveling the home first.
It's amazing that the Japanese have retained these building methods into the modern era. It's far superior and longer lasting than stick homes.
