I own a Ramirez1A and it's wonderful. Have to confess the Lattice guitar is louder. Both sound really good. Ramirez trebels are remarkably remind me of velvet or silk.

The lattice sounds like a banjo compared to the sweet, warm, rich, full-bodied and quintessentially Spanish Ramirez.

I don't think it sounds like banjo. My Nomex sounds more like piano or marimba. But Sheridan's guitar doesn't sound like that. It sounds like guitar.

It’s not the traditional Spanish sound but it has its strengths. There is a certain clarity that comes with a lattice braced guitar. I have a Thomas Humphrey Millennium and a Ramirez 1a, I do like the sound of the 1a for certain pieces like Bach’s Chaconne from Partita no.2 but I like the Humphrey lattice braced guitar for a lot of the Latin American music. If you listen to the Assad Brothers you will hear lattice braced guitars a lot.

Good presentation. I use a lattice top for ensemble playing and fan braced for solo recording . The aspect that cant be explained by a recording like this is the players experience. The response of the two guitars is very different for the player. It's a different experience. I prefer the response of a lattice braced guitar , but the sound of the fan braced model is preferable.... So much upper mid range in the lattice type, its a bit much , all that mid range and a rather flat sound. My instrument is similar, but the response is great. Also , the scale length of the Ramirez must be 10 mm longer than the lattice . A very different model.... Thanks for the demonstration.

Both are beautiful. The Ramirez is has a sweeter and more traditional tone. The Sheridan has a more distinctive and stronger voice. So my choice would depend on the particular piece of music to be played.

I've got a 1971, Cedar top, Ramirez 1a and it's a great guitar. The only fault that it has - if you can call it a fault, more like something to be aware of - is that it is a 664mm scale length so full barres at the first and second fret are a bit of a workout as the tension on the strings is substantial down there. Paul Sheridan is one of our great luthiers and he makes really great guitars. They're not cheap but they're worth every cent.

I once heard it said that the more volume you try to squeeze out of a guitar, the more it starts to sound like a banjo. If you compare banjo design and design goals of lattice/carbon fiber/double top guitars, they are very similar. This is just my opinion, of course, but the appeal of the classical guitar is the uniquely beautiful and soulful voice of the traditional Spanish guitar. Flame away, modern guitar lovers...

It was amazing that Paul Sheridan who was a mediocre luthier in the 70's has come up so far up to the same level as Ramirez. Philippe doesn't say whether it is Nomex or Balsa, but surely the modern technique has made it easier to achieve good results. Sheridan sounds very bright and sweet, and Ramirez has what Segovia calls "profundo", very serious voice indeed.

There's a big gap between the different Ramirez 1 a..... Every Ramirez sounds different than the other. Moreover, the old ones (the ones who are very common in the market) tend to sound old, tired, and weak ( something that usually happens to old guitars in general). My feeling is that you are using an old, not so good, Ramirez 1a, which makes the other guitars sound much better than her in terms of sustain, volume, and trebles.

Thanks for your comments. That is true that Ramirez guitars are different over time (3 generation of luthiers). The one used is not a bad one but rather good and really we played many of them. It will not be fair to compare our brand new guitar with a old generation of Ramirez for the 60's which will in any case costs as well a lot more.

Not all Ramirez 1a sound good. I have come across a few Ramirez's which sound quite mediocre. Even the workmanship is not that good. If you are just nobody and goes to Ramirez shop in Madrid, they won't offer you their top guitars. I have a friend who went there as a tourist and came home with a slightly warped Ramirez. He took it because he was desperate. He offered it to me for a very reasonable price, but I didn't take it. Maybe the Segovia Edition is different.
