Comparison of the DM41X and the DM42 (English overdub of the German original video)

Ғылым және технология

This video has originally been published as a generic German video, but due to a kind viewer request I've decided, not to publish a version with subtitles (since I hate subtitles) but to add an English audio track and cancel out the German track. So, this is not a generic English video but I hope you like it nevertheless. If enough positive feedback is given, I'll produce more English content in the future. Stay tuned!
The German version ( • Vergleich DM41X und DM... ) contained two errors, first, the alpha input mode was only shown using the function keys. There's also a quicker way if you cycle through the three available modes uppercase, lowercase and number, which allow for direct use of all keys instead of selecting out of groups via the function key method. Second, I claimed that the DM42 had no help system like the DM41X has it. That's downright wrong, the DM42 even has the identical help system, consisting of a lightweight hypertext browser. But of course, I did not repeat these errors in the English audio :)

Herzlich willkommen und danke! I'm very excited about your future video on conversion of MOD's from the 41X to the 42S. There is an application called rom2raw which I think converts flags mainly. It would be nice to have MODs run natively on a DM42. Thank you again.

If you asked me, don't know, I'd say the following: I would not invest money into an old HP41CX. I consider this too risky. The chassis can have broken parts inside, you may have to exchange the contact plate, don't know, what else could be defective. And moreover, you would have all these communication problems: If you do not buy HP-IL hardware, which costs exorbitant sums of money, you can only take your pencil and write your program codes by hand in order to save them somehow. Even the printermodule for RedEye communication is extremely expensive, and it only communicates to the outside, you still have no way to send data from the PC to the calculator. The DM41X and the DM42 offer a perfect interface to the modern computing world, so my HP41CX only sits here as a reminder of the good old days in university. The question, DM42 or DM41X, is a bit more complex. In terms of calculating power the DM42 is better: more precise and much faster. In terms of versatility and use of external software ressources the DM41X is unbeatable. So, you decide, bro!

While watching I was asking myself if another leap would be to design this to take one base and add keyboard/screen desired. Also with its own ability to add program overlays. So you could buy one platform and collect any of the hp calculators you want. 😏

On the description above is supposedly a link to a PDF for this presentation of your "Comparison of the DM41X and the DM42" but instead it downloads a presentation by Godwin Stewart entitled "DMConnect For the DM10, DM11, DM12, DM15, DM16 and DM41". Do you have a PDF for what your video showed and could you please update the URL so we can download those presentation notes?

Jim, I have now clicked on the link and yes, it opens (as it should) a presentation created by Godwin Stewart, and yes, it is in PDF format. So, everything's fine with the link as well as with the document itself. At least as far as I can see. The link is exactly "hpcc.org/conferences/HPCC2020/HPCC2020_10_DMConnect.*pdf*". - I hope this answers your question. If not, don't hesitate to ask further questions. And, if you had in mind a presentation or PDF of my video above: No, there is none. All the best, cheers!

This is very interesting, but I still cannot decide! It is a HUGE pity that SwissMicros so not make the personality exchangeable by the end user. As far as I can see the firmware can be exchanged, so all it would take is replaceable button sets and an overlay film for the keypad surround.

You are right! It's a pity that we cannot simply change the keyboard one or the other way. But as far as I understand it, the keyboard is attached to the mainboard in a way that won't allow for a simple solution. Anyway, I would ask myself a simple question: Is the HP41 environment (this huge amount of source code in the web) a fascinating thing to me or not? If you're mainly working on your own, i. e. programming all the stuff needed is done by you, I'd tend to the 42 because programming is quite similar to the HP41 but with great additional features like the programmable keys, and pressing XEQ brings up suggestions you may immediately use (or not). Its accuracy and extended precision in calculations is one further important aspect, but this may interesting or needed by you or not. And program execution is a blast! If you're the more traditional type of user with possibly his own repository of code, and you love the way things worked on the HP41, then you will experience a vast extension to the HP41 world using the DM41x by its superb connectivity to the outer world. Hope this helps a bit, and have a nice new year 2021!

@@N.A._McBee From what I can see in KZread tare-downs it should be possible albeit fiddly given that the physical layout is unchanged, just the silk screening on the keytops and the key frame. One would just need to dismantle the board sandwich and replace the plastic keytops. Unfortunately they did not design the key frame to take plastic film overlays as some HP models had - it just needs retention slots top and bottom into which tabs on the overlay would slot. This feature would be useful for user customization as well as switching firmware. They could supply pre-cut blank films ready for printing on ink-jets. The other thing I'd like to see them do is add support for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This is very much the modern incarnation of HPIB and would integrate with the firmware in much the same way, but over radio rather than wires. One other question: Are the retro segmented fonts on the DM41X replaceable with something that looks better and is more readable on the graphic display panel? I understand some people like the retro nostalgia, but this device has already drifted so far from the original that it seems pointless to emulate this particular design compromise! But lets be honest here: what I am really holding out for is a DM48-50.

@@john_hind I know that on the SwissMicros forum some discussions have taken place exactly about this keyboard thing. Maybe they couldn't foresee this as an issue for customers. Don't know. - When you add BT on your wishlist: Mine has a display illumination in addition :) I share your opinion on the font but I have no clue how deeply this is embedded in the firmware. But maybe that's a thing which could be done at reasonable cost, don't know.

I did not say that DMconnect could be of any use for the DM41X! I mentioned it to round up the area of interoperability and data exchange for the whole SwissMicros family of calculators. I wanted to point out, that at the moment the DM42 and the DM41X offer the best data exchange between calculator and a PC. But with DMconnect also the earlier and less featureful models (Voyager series and the DM41 cardsized model) will catch up in this respect.
