DM42 Calculator Review: Should You Buy It? [2023]

The most precise calculator on the worldwide market - second to none! And it uses the powerful and proven RPN logic. DM42 runs Free42, which uses the Intel Decimal Floating-Point Math Library; it uses IEEE 754-2008 quadruple precision decimal floating-point, which consumes 16 bytes per number, and gives 34 decimal digits of precision, with exponents ranging from -6143 to +6144.

You did not mention or go into detail on the most important part of this calculator: Do the keys feel clicky like the original HP ones? That would be the only reason I would even consider buying this calculator.

I own one - the keys are, in my opinion, more clicky than the original. There is less overall travel, but there's slightly higher spring constant to make up for it. Same feel in a shorter distance. The whole thing is steel and the buttons are mechanical. The OS-level features of the calculator expand what the calculator can do tremendously.

@@hank1519 It's great! Grab a pad of graphing paper, a sharp pencil, and use the side of the DM42 as a straightedge and you are all set (although my slide rules allow for a larger graph used this way).

@@hank1519 Sorry for the late response, but I just saw this. The good news is that Posts are out there for sale. I like my CIE (Cleveland Institute of Electronics) rule the best. :) And I just got my overlays for my DM42. It can masquerade as a C47, a WP43, or a DB48X now.

You may want to try the new DB48X firmware on your DM42, kzread.info/dash/bejne/na6fzKdxcr29YZM.html. It's not limited to a puny 34 digits, but has practically unlimited decimal precision, e.g. 200 digits.

The best thing about this calculator is software, Free42 simulator on which it's based. Free42 is a independent open-source project and DM42 is just a hardware shell around it. As a hardware device on its own the quality isn't good at all. Keyboard sucks, labels wear over time, no firmware updates, painted metal case gets scratched. It's a niche gadget for enthusiasts (collector item) but crappy consumer device. I never owned original HP 42s but HP 50g has way better quality - plastics, tactile feedback of keys etc. HP 50g is the best engineering calculator if HP Prime is not true old school enough for your liking.

@@msujonbd , Hi. I believe that @razeliezerbenmoshe8052 was referring to HP CAS, wich is a piece of software initially implemented by HP, I think, on the 28 series calculators that is able to work with algebraic equations, solving/manipulating such equations symbolically. CAS stands for "Computer Algebra System".
