Some of these buildings do look quite interesting though I am not a fan of the current modern architecture. It'll be interesting to see how these buildings will age. These fancy facades will need a lot of expensive maintenance work to keep them looking nice and I can't imagine this money will be spent forever. Once they start to cheap out on the maintenance cost the buildings may end up looking quite grotty... hard to imagine now while they are new, but just give them 20 - 30 years...

DrCassette correct theory. Exact same thing happened to tower blocks of the 60s

DrCassette Very true! But it won’t surprise me if these new buildings aren’t liveable in 20 years, because of how cheaply they make the buildings nowadays. Everything is rushed and the materials are such poor quality, architects will have to take a note of the brutalist architects and how they were so clever in using concrete to make strong and long lasting buildings.

Love that pen trick! That was too easy, I can’t believe the receptionist fell for that. A real Mission Impossible style trick too. Some of those buildings are typical “Starchitect” creations. Starchitects have a lot of self-indulgance and a big ego to show off. The usual suspects are: Rem Koolhaas (OMA), Ben van Berkel (UN studio) and BenthemCrouwel. The last one made some of the worst musuem extensions in the netherlands which is the “bath tub” of the Stedelijk museum. It’s looks gimmicky and all shiny but it’s a lot of form over function. It was built at the expense of the taxpayer’s hard earned pennies. To top it off, it was remodelled by Rem Koolhaas to fix it! 😂 Never the less, some of these creations can be fun but they lack the grittyness of brutalist buildings who where built for the common man and not for the rich.

I haven't been to London since the mid 90's. It's changed so much. I'd like to go again but the train fair is extortionate, it's like over 100 pounds, no way I'm paying that! I'd like to have a go at getting on roofs of tower blocks.

That factory thing is called a jump form. I doubt they didn't plan how to get it down beforehand. They probably did this building as an experiment to get their heads around the cost savings before committing themselves to anything bigger. And it may well be that they have an existing relationship with the crane company whereby they knew the crane was free at the time they would need it so it was the cheapest option. The jump form wasn't anything major. It could have easily been built to be dismantled and bought down in the buildings lifts. This has been done elsewhere in the world.

2 tower blocks in South London are known as the Jenga Towers- the ones that have gaps in the towers at intervals.

Just so you know you missed a couple of lifts in the mace factory. You went in the bike lift which isn't as fast as the main ones and there is also a small lift that serves the lower floors.

Otis is the worst. They are even worse than some of the better generics. There lifts are pure cancer. A lot of things changed since the 70s.
