Comparison: 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata vs 2022 Toyota GR86 / Affordable Sports Cars Part Deux

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A while back, I made video comparing the new 2022 Toyota GR86 against the Mazda MX-5 Miata. But in that video, I didn't have a lot of time with the GR86 and the MX5 was the RF version and it was modified. This time around, I have an entire week with the Toyota and the Miata is completely stock.
The last Toyota GT86 (Scion FRS / Subaru BRZ) felt underpowered and was one of the biggest criticisms of the car. This new GR86 addresses that by giving drivers a bigger and more powerful engine. It has a 2.4L flat-4 boxer engine that was developed with Subaru and this new engine produces a healthy 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque (170 kW & 249 Nm). The 0-100 km/h time (62 mph) is down to the 5.5 second mark. This is the engine that the Toyota 86/FRS should have always had.
2022 doesn’t see any changes to the engine. The MX-5 is still powered by a 2.0L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder that can produce 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque (135 kW & 205 Nm). The engine is able to accelerate the car from a stop to 100 km/h in around 5.7 seconds.
The 2022 Toyota GR86 starts at just $31,490 CAD ($27,700 USD) with the 6-speed manual transmission. This particular vehicle is the Premium GR86 which will set you back $34,490 CAD ($30,300 USD). The automatic version will cost an additional $2,400 CAD ($1,500 USD).
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 soft-top starts at a very reasonable $33,300 CAD ($27,650 USD). But from then on, things get expensive. This GS-P trim (MX-5 Club as it's known in the US) costs $37,300 CAD ($31,150 USD) but it doesn’t feel complete without the Sport Package which will cost you an additional $4,400 CAD ($4,470 USD). When it’s all said and done, a properly equipped Mazda MX 5 GS-P with the Sport package can cost as much as $50,000 CAD with taxes & fees in. That’s a lot especially considering that a fully loaded Toyota GR86 2022 is $10,000 CAD less (taxes & fees included).

Here in France, a GR86 is much more expensive. So i chose the MX-5 as my daily even it's not very practical, i have no regrets, it's so much fun ! And the interior quality is nicer than the toyota.

@@MGReviewsBlog two answers for you. I grab the Miata keys more frequently because it’s new to me. If I could only have one it’d be the gr86. Practicality advantage aside, it’s got more midrange torque and its handling characteristics are more fun (flat handling with tail happiness engineered in). So many people praise the quality of the stick shift in the Miata - and for good reason - but I see the gr86’s as different vs lesser. It’s very good in its own right. The clutch feel is advantage to Miata. Although aesthetics are secondary to fun to drive factor for me - I’d call it a push. Traded a 981 boxster s for this Miata and no regrets. Porsche makes excellent cars, but it’s really hard to beat the driving experience of these two with or without the cost factored in.

WOW! I am totally impressed by your video production. Camera work, information and comparison was just superb. Thank you so much. I am currently shopping these two cars, and possibly something from Honda like the SI or Sport Touring hatchback. I must have a manual and that limits my choices along with trying to purchase something under $40k USD. I will probably end up with the Mazda3 Premium Hatchback manual due to cost , space , naturally aspirated motor and the expected reliability and other comfort features for vacation travel. I am still driving the Mazda3 sedan manual that I bought new in 2006 and love it but I want something new for my retirement gift to myself! I ride motorcycles, I drove a semi for several years and the manual transmission has been me since the age of 16. I have subscribed , liked and hope that I will find more reviews from you possibly with the Honda Sport Touring, SI, Type-R, Integra, Elantra-N, BRZ, Mazda3 with manual of course and anything else similar that falls within my budget and is available with the manual .

I had an RF for 5 years and only recently flipped it for a 2022 BRZ. They are both great cars and it’s a miracle they both still exist. They both “daily” really easily. The Mazda was probably the least temperamental in an urban environment having a less tricky clutch and better torque below 2000…but they are both pretty easy in traffic. They both reward on Sunday morning back roads. The Mazda is more fun at 6/10ths but the Toybaru is more capable at 9/10ths. It’s the better out of the box track car. If you want open air, it’s a no contest, but if you are over 6ft and/or you need the car to car any luggage at all, then it’s a no contest to the Toybaru. The Mazda requires you to make the more compromises. It’s really a toy. You really can’t go wrong with either….but if you are over 6’2”, buy the Toybaru.

@@MGReviewsBlog It’s been great. Got tracked (still stock) on the weekend and even though I didn’t push it past about 8-9/10ths, it was brilliant for a “straight out of the box” car. The RF would have been starting to get a bit ragged at the speeds I was pushing the BRZ. Both cars need work if you are going to push them to the limit on track…but the BRZ is definitely the more track ready. The Mazda is probably more entertaining at legal road speeds though.

I honestly don’t know what to expect, I just hope the 86 will be good enough to compensate. Also I heard others saying the miata doesn’t have any rev hang while the toyota does have some at low rpms, and for me this is the worst drawback the 86 has compared to the miata

@@guattodaddo well to be honest, i had no intention of getting a miata, ive had an 86 on order since june, i was deadset on it, the miata was on the lot so i figured why not test drive it for a comparison, and that's truly all it took, the clutch engagement point is not defined at all, the 86 was the first car in forever that i actually stalled during the test drive (dont tell the salesman haha), i found it was impossible to make a smooth start with the thing, but the 86 is a beautiful car visually, sad.

@@wolfgagger I don't know about you but I finally have my GR now, it's been roughly 1 month now. All the things you and M.G. said I can confirm. I'm enjoying the car a lot, but the clutch pedal is killing me and I too stalled my car a number of times in my complete disbelief... It's not good at all and the fact that I drove a mazda for the past 6 years is making it worst ! I also went and test driven a miata and I was able the adjust the seat and the steering more precisely. In the GR I am comfortable but I wish the steering would have a little bit more telescopic travel. The rev hang in the GR is just awful in city driving at low speeds! At some point I was so pissed that I went for a longer route just to go faster and shift less... But as M.G. said in the video, when you drive hard you don't have this problem no more. Still, to think mazda has put absolutely ZERO rev hang in the miata I wonder why the hell toyota and subaru thought it was a good idea in the first place... The shifter as M.G. said is better in the mx5, bar none the best shifter I ever had the pleasure to operate. The one in the GR is simply less precise and it wobbles a bit too much for my taste, it still has a very good feeling but it just can't beat the mazda's shifter. Apart from these considerations I'm enjoying the 86 a lot, the engine is very nice, the oversteer and the handling are also very enjoyable! I do not regret the waiting and my decision to get the 86. Now it's time to do some changes to address all the issues and then new exhaust and wheels !

I’m buying my first car in a couple of months. Dad is helping with the co-sign but drives a Prius and swears that sports cars are the devil. (No dice on getting any input from him unfortunately.) I’m split between the Miata MX5 grand touring, GR 86 Premium & Supra 2.0 w/ safety jbl package. I understand all three cars are entirely different in terms of performance, but the breaking point for me is the technology. Would you be able to give your honest opinion on the three? That’d be helpful, sir. Great video, as always. 💯 (current car 2011 scion xb)

So the most technological among those three would be the Supra but it's also the most expensive. I did a review of that one a couple months ago: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKV6rpqCf6uynNY.html I personally really liked the 2.0L Supra and if I had a budget like that car demands, then I'd be going for it. If your budget is not that much, the other two are similar when it comes to tech. In my opinion, like I said in the video, it comes down to how you are planning on using it. If you want a daily commuter with a lot of practicality (relatively speaking, the GR86 is the one to go for. The MX5 is also a good daily and drives a bit better than the GR86 but also not as practical and more expensive (in the GT trim). So for me, Supra 1st, GR86 2nd, MX5 3rd.

Top down drizzling with the side windows up & the heater on full heat. All the things I hated about that 124 Abarth were attributes on the MX-5 ! Super light clutch & the shifter was easy to hit every gear. Instant throttle response in every gear ! What a difference ! After the test drive we went inside he got the manager to do the details but I said I needed more time. So that manager gave me the rest of the weekend to test drive it. I left my trade in the parking lot while I fully tested the MX-5 Club & he said to stop in after work to make a decision. I drove 240 miles on every highway every good road I could think of. I was there at the Mazda dealer after work with my checkbook to pay the balance left after my trade in. 5 years of daily driving this car in a 4 season climate, absolutely the best car I've owned in over 50 years of driving !

@@ag4allgoodas much as I love my Abarth, I would never buy a Mazda Miata. Most people have no idea what an Abarth is and they think my car costs $60 to $80K and that would never happen with a Miata. Your comment about the clutch pressure is ridiculous as the transmission and clutch assembly is the same robust, tried and true unit found in the NC and did not suffer the catastrophic failures of the early ND transmissions which obviously was an inferior unit. The turbo lag is easily addressed with a Phase Two tune and the extra 60+ horsepower gained means I can run away and hide from any stock Miata even an ND2. With its sexy Itiaian body work, turbo charged engine, amazing sounding Record Monza exhaust system and limited production numbers the Abarth 124 Spider is one of the most unique, affordable sport cars in the world.

If I'm in the market for a disposable "sports car" (which I am BTW) then I'm not going to buy a car where the majority of the owners are high school to mid-twenties squids. That would be the GR86. Add some coil-overs and sway bars and it's the Miata GT rag top for the win.

@@philmelb1022 Still cheap looking even if they have more goodies, much of which are superfluous for a sports car. I think the painted sills on the mx5 depend on what color the car is. I would hate white sills being in my peripheral vision but the gray looks great. They don't scratch easily at all either, you'd have to be pretty clumsy to do so.

Very well done, systematic review. No mention of the cup holders on the mx5 BUT, BUT the fact is if you are an intelligent person who values your time then you drive when you are driving and eat and drink in a restaurant even if it is a fast food place. MULTITASKING like driving and drinking (cup holders) are a stupid marketing ploy. I only multitask as a matter of work and or efficiency. When I am driving my MX5 (NC) I am fully engaged in the driving and the drive is preferably with the top down. If you need an analogy, would you be in bed with JLO or you pick (hot chick) and be texting or drinking or multitasking (out side ) the reality of the high performance sports vehicle in front of you? Both instances use your head and stick.........shift.

TY Mac Daddy ! For being so tall ! I got a great deal on my 2016 MX-5 Club soft top with Brembo / BBS package probably because guys being too tall / need more room / hate the small trunk ! Its interior is not for everyone as it fits more like a driving glove. That is what made me like the car so much. Its focused on the driver with no extra driving aids that turned me off on my 2014 Accord Coupe V6 with manual 6 speed. The collision avoidance system it had was a PITA ! It kept going off around turns like a backseat driver that had 3 Monster drinks ! Disable it & there on the dash is a brilliant amber light. No Honda ! That is not what I want in my car ! So this would be the car I trade in for a 2016 MX-5 Club. The MX-5 is a focused drivers car with all the basic stuff but NOTHING that ever annoyed me. My passenger seat is often catching the overflow from the trunk ! It has work arounds that make the car special.
