Comparing ZYEX and EVAH PIRAZZI Strings On My Plywood Double Bass (Pizzicato only)

Музыка

I was curious to hear how different D'Addario's ZYEX light and Pirastro's EVAH PIRAZZI Weich sound on my plywood bass, so I tried both and recorded the process. Both string types have a synthetic core made of a material called PEEK.
Note: The ZYEX set was given to me my D'Addario before ZYEX was commercialized. In theory it is possible that the strings have been slightly changed when it got commercialized, i don't know.

    The Zyex sound more open en focussed with a very nice attack. The Pirazzi's are too 'woolly' for me on this particular bass. Nice comparison once again!

    I just read a few comments and it's like it's turning into a Plywood V none plywood debate , so in the firs instance there is a clue in the Title if you care to read and if you are so hung up on being anti ply as stated in STRINGMATRIX Comments you don't have to watch ,also if he had not mentioned that the Bass was plywood , how many of you would have known (without kidding yourself) I thought the Bass sounds great , and I thank you for putting this Video on I appreciate the time you've spent doing this Video, I have an old German flat back Bass circa 1900 and a 15 year old Fully Carved round back (Gedo Music which is easier to play but wanting to sell as I don't use enough now) and was wondering about strings with different centre cores for easier playability to put on the Older Bass ,any advice ,( I do both Classical and Jazz )

    Thank you very much! Easier playability? Maybe Evah Pirazzi slap (all synthetic) or Tempera hybrid. Or you can use a solo set tuned to normal tuning, but I didn't try a lot of those. I heard there is an Evah Pirazzi solo set, that might be interesting too.

    I think I like the Zyex better, all in all. They seem to sing out better, which is a sound I like. They just seem a little richer in tone to my ear. Just my opinion.

    Hervé, great video again. I prefer the Zyex. I used both sets a long time (both in normal gauge). My experience was that especially the E string of the Zyex set sounded way better than the Pirazzi. But I had a problem with Zyex strings. With my band we had a piece, where I had to tune the E string to an F (for having a long F note and playing in the high register at the same time) and the E string broke two times (even on a gig). So I stopped playing the Zyex.

    Thank you for this information Frowin! That's surprising I would have thought that tuning a 1/2 step higher is not a big problem for a string like Zyex.

    @@stringmatrix Yes, that's true. I spoke to D'Addario about it at the Music Messe in ca. 2012. They were suprised too and they gave me a new string. I don't know how this happended, maybe it was my bass.

    This video confirms my experience with these strings. Zyex have a brighter, more modern sound with a nice growl but a fairly dark E string. By comparison, the Evah Pirazzi set is much darker with a nice percussive attack at the front of the note which was very apparent in your video. Evah Pirazzi is also more consistent under the bow. Both are nice sets, but out of all the synthetic core strings I’ve tried my favorite is Obligato. That being said, my favorite set overall these days is Pirastro Perpetual.

    The zyex? I can't tell you exactly, the plywood bass is no so good played arco. And it's a long time ago that I had the strings on my carved bass. I guess they work well with the bow but Evahs are more famous for their arco quality I think.

    Zyex: more sustain; sings nice up high. Bottom string is a bit subdued. Pirazzi for classical. I'd take the top 3 Zyex, and add a more lively E string.

    Hello sir. Where can I buy adjustable bridge . I need it for thumb position as my present set up is very difficult to play. What string heights do you recommend for thumb position playing pizzicato?

  • @stringmatrix

    @stringmatrix

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello Deepak, you need to go to a specialized bass maker/repair workshop. Because every bridge is fitted per hand work to the curve of your bass to (and to the curve of your fingerboard). Plus the bridge has to have specific dimensions (e.g. the distance between both feet) that fit your bass. And the whole adjustment is very important for the playing comfort. There are many parameters, and only an experienced bass maker/repairer will know all these details and bring your instrument to be non-frustrating!

    No one wants a string evaluation on plywood basses. I don’t understand the rationale. Please explain.

  • @stringmatrix

    @stringmatrix

    3 ай бұрын

    I can explain: on this channel I am mainly documenting my search for strings and generally for a good sound as a pizzicato bass player. In this case I stood before the decision, which strings I should put on my plywood bass and I was wondering how different zyex and evah would turn out, so I tried. And I filmed the tests and put them on KZread. Nobody has the obligation to watch videos they think are pointless. I don't get a paycheck for my work, the KZread money is just enough to buy a pizza and two drinks per month. People who appreciate my work sometimes send me a donation, and I highly appreciate this support when it happens. If somebody wants a special video for a certain topic, they are welcome to contact me and we can discuss a payment. Otherwise, as I said, I just film the tests that I do for myself and I spend quite a lot of time with the editing. Many bassists appreciate my efforts, but you don't have to, and you don't have to watch either.

    I feel like this comment is based on the idea that plywood basses are inferior compared to carved basses, which is incorrect. They’re definitely cheaper, but that doesn’t mean that a plywood isn’t a useful instrument for a professional. Carved basses tend to have a more complex tone, but that doesn’t make them better, just different. I’ve played carved instruments that don’t speak at all, and plywoods that sing beautifully. Every instrument is different. If anything, I think this video highlights the fact that the same string can sound quite different on different basses. It’s fun and educational to hear the differences, and it can inform your string journey, provided that you understand that the strings might sound different on your bass. You can get a sense of the tendencies of the strings from these videos, which I think is great.

    Actually, many of us do. I'm looking at laminated basses so my expensive carved bass can stay home in certain environments, and because I want that sound in my stable. This video compared the strings I'm considering. + a good ply bass is not inferior when used in the right application, it's different, eddie gomez used one a LOT, as do others. There's a lot of truth to the notion that your sound on any stringed instrument comes from where the rubber meets the road; your hands and the strings you choose.

This is Likely to do with Many Younger Players accustomed to Amplification.. Try Playing Acoustically when you can.. It Will Strengthen your hands, AND be Beneficial in the Long Run..
