    How the hell is gibson inconsistent? I have not heard a Les Paul that makes me think "that doesn't sound like a Les Paul". All Les Pauls sound great to me, maybe the quality control can vary at times, sometimes the new Les Pauls are a little overweight.

    @@manofthepeople2165 watch Rhett Shull's video on why he dislikes PRS and loves Gibson. He likes that he has to search for years and play dozens of LPs to find a good one with "mojo" that feels "right". He dislikes that every PRS plays the same. Dave Grissom (of PRS DGT signature model) expresses the opposite view - he never takes his own DGT to in-store events/demos/clinics - he expects to pick a DGT off the shop wall and it to play as well as his personal guitar. That, in a nutshell, is what I mean by inconsistency and consistency. And also why players themselves are divided by it.

I can go into any music store and play every gibson and i guarentee you half of those are gunna feel like crap, stick necks from too much coating, super dry fingerboards, scratches in the fingerboard, poor fret job, etc. It feels awesome finding a good one but thats only because its so hard to. The hate for PRS is ridiculous. SE line is the best quality overall compared to other companies that forced them to improve. The American PRS are comparatively similar price to both Gibson and Fender who offer guitars from $2000-$10,000 also so the statement that PRS is a lawyer/doctor guitar is a lie. But for the same price PRS especially the private stock I think offers more customized options since you can handpick wood in person and color whereas Gibson and Fender are stuck on reissues, stressed/vintage looking guitars with limited color options and certain woods they pick. But people spend $5-10,000 for Gibson or Fender guitars that look no different than others so🤷‍♂️ I see a lot of black stressed Fenders worth $$$$$$ but that’s ok but a custom handpicked PRS for same price receives hate.

Here's the problem I have encountered for 60 years...the price. These guitars have always been out of reach for the average player. Get a PRS DGT SE. Same kind of price as a decent Epiphone. But trust me it’s an amazing guitar for any price. Easy to play, the neck is kind of like a Gibson, it’s really lightweight and ergonomic. I have to flame top with the birds on the neck and it is stunning. But they also just released a super stripped down guitar with a bolt on neck and no maple top for under $600 usd. It still has the birds on the neck and comes on some different colour wood stains, from dark to bold. Same hardware and electronics as in models that cost 3 and 3 times the price

    I correctly guessed the Les Paul in the tone test - probably because I own an LP Standard HP2 with Burstbuckers. Either that or it was blind luck... Either way, I'm not a big fan of the Burstbuckers - they're too bright in my guitar. My Studio HP has the 490R/498T pups and they produce that 'instant Thin Lizzy/Gary Moore' tone. It's what I wanted from an LP and has become my favourite as a result. I don't own a core PRS but if I did the CE model would be my choice. I have a couple of PRS SE Santana models and whilst they are perfectly good, I rarely play them. I probably should sell them. I wouldn't miss them 🤷‍♂

    Well, I don't hate my PRS, and I have one of the least desirable, poorest selling models ever...an '08 McCarty II with the dreaded (gasp!) MVC. An online store had a bunch of these dust collectors at about 1/2 price a while back and I figured what the heck. Actually, the MVC can produce great tones, it just eats those two 9v batteries like a house afire. Without fail one will die while you're blasting out your brilliant cover of FreeBird. However, I learned that played passively, the thing sounds great, and breathed new life into my former closet queen. Plus I get most of the other PRS perks, like great build, fantastic neck, decent top (not 10), birds, and, honestly, pride of ownership. Also in my 70s, playing since '66.

    Nothing against PRS, never felt in love with it, but the ones I played were nice guitars. Now regarding Gibson, and Fender for that matter, there's nothing today done by them that can't be done by any other maker. I respect tradition and how they shaped music history, but I don't play history, I play guitars. And my money is too hard earned for me to justify spending what these brands ask for compared with what is delivered by them. With Gibson there's even the shitty QC that's almost legendary at this point. PAFs are PAFs because each one of those were made differently, same with the bursts. And then there's the legal bs and the play authentic. Now, if money is no problem to you, then chose whatever. But, to me, even if I could buy a murphy lab, I'd look somewhere else with that kind of money.

    I play Les Pauls cause they feel comfortable and I like the sound. I guess the hate comes from their high prices. Maybe its Gibson’s fault. They don’t promote their Tributes and Studio as much as they should and those guitars punch well above their weight…

    most guitar companies make good instruments. Most people find one, or a couple companies that makes a certain guitar (or type of guitar) they're looking for... and that company becomes their favorite. IMO most companies make decent guitars, it just depends on what you're looking for... except for blue guitars... there's no excuse for blue guitars

    I like Gibson guitars so much that I am opportunistically seeking to fill out my guitar rack with a few more over the next several years. Unfortunately, I don’t have nearly the same affection for Gibson’s spiraling price increases, quality control, or the way they have tried to throw their weight around lately. For PRS, I always liked their look but found their sound to be a little antiseptic and neutral. I then bought an SE and realized how biased I was because I had always used Fender and Gibson as a reference point rather than considering PRS as having its own sound. From this perspective, it’s less that PRS has no soul and more that Fender and Gibson are very idiosyncratic. PRS guitars are like very clean electrified acoustics with a moldable sound profile that is more versatile than either Fender or Gibson. Now I am in the market for another PRS SE CE when updated colors are released.

    Insightful comment re: PRS. Finely tuned, consistent etc. which for some = 'bland', I guess. I have played a Gibson LP Custom since 1974, a lovely Japanese made Strat sine 1979 (and a few other guitars along the way) but I bought the PRS SE Custom 24:08 on sale and I'm really enjoying it - in part because the split-coil combos are fun, but also because I mainly go for 'clean' tones so I appreciate the definition . . . and that's just from the stock pick-ups!

    It's value. I grew up idolizing Gibsons, especially Les Pauls. Then I got my hands on some, as well as guitars from competitors. I hate the idea of paying $3,300 for what I get from other companies for $1,200... except for branding. Gibson's chief product these days is nostalgia. Doesn't mean their guitars are bad, but you're paying a huge premium for the brand.

    Just buy epiphone then, thats why the import lines exist. It's a different headstock shape and different logo but the sound and feel is as close as you can get to a Gibson. PRS charges just as much, if not more for their SE line if not more than Epiphone.

    I guessed correctly, but it really was just a guess. I think most of the haters of these brands are just bandwagon jumpers. My biggest gripe about Gibson is some of their outlandish pricing. PRS has expensive guitars too, but they also have SE models that are considered incredible bargains (bang for the buck). You will never hear “bargain” and “Gibson” in the same sentence… except for this sentence. Never say never. Damn it, I did it again.

    I don’t hate any guitar manufacturer but in PRS case, he’s made a damn good living basically copying Fender and Gibson. I don’t see any value added other than to have a guitar that doesn’t have a Fender or Gibson label on the headstock. Gibson and Fender created the guitars that Paul is cashing in on. The argument about cost is moot as well. Gibson makes Tribute series guitars as well as studios which are much more affordable. PRS has cheaper priced guitars and they too have outrageously priced guitars. Gibson also has Epiphone which is both well situated price and quality wise.

    People hate on Gibson because they are overpriced and going for the cashed up midlife crisis market. But they do make great sounding instruments. PRS are on fire. They don’t have the double edged sword of being associated with the founders of rock music, so they are free to tweak and change without people complaining. I think the foundational design of PRS guitars are way more guitar player focused, and as time goes on new players will have little emotional and inspirational attachment to guitars of the 1960s. New players will pick up PRS and just feel that they play better. I love a Gibson LP, but when the playing gets hectic, I have to navigate that brick of a neck join. Whereas my PRS never takes me out of thinking about the notes.

    I'm not a fan of either brand, but I wouldn't call it hate. They're both typically priced beyond what I can *responsibly* afford, with lower specs or features than a lot of cheaper guitars. I find the aesthetics for PRS especially to be incredibly off-putting. Gibson's reputation as a company is terrible, and their QC for a top-dollar brand is crap.

  • @allanflippin2453
    @allanflippin24535 ай бұрын

    The Gibson hatred is centered around the company's attitude. They innovated in the 50's and 60's but since then have operated more as an investment firm, suing anybody that makes a guitar that looks a little bit like theirs. Buying up competitors so they can put them out of business. While other companies think about design, manufacturing efficiency and quality, Gibson thinks about keep prices high and their legal team. The PRS criticism goes along the lines of "yeah, my doctor has one of those". They're not a malevolent force like Gibson and as of late they've done a lot for bringing reasonably priced quality guitars to the market. Kudos to Paul for still working at his namesake company! On your sound samples, I can't tell much difference. The thing is, by "making things equal", you neglect the extra features (vibrato, coil splitting) that give PRS its extra personality. High quality, more features, lower price, maybe enough to get over the anti-PRS bias?
