Comparing the Fractal, Kemper, & Tonex | Two Rock Traditional Clean Captures

Музыка

Here is a comparison between three different amp modeler captures: Fractal, Kemper, and Tonex. They are all captures of the Two Rock Traditional Clean witht the same mics, mic placement, amp settings, and I used a plugin reverb to keep it similar. Which do you prefer?!

you are correct I felt the tonex captured that meaty low end really well , all 3 sounded great but when paying attention to the isolated tracks tonex has that extra weight

They all feel and sound great for sure! I think for me there’s just a little more sustain from the Fractal.

Why not add the real amp with the same mics, room, etc. And, use the logic reverb. This way we see how close they are to the original.

not a lot to choose between all three. I prefer the fractal and Kemper versions but I feel the Kemper is a little more detailed. The ToneX sound a bit "scooped" compared to the other two and has a bit too much bass, I'd probably dial some of that out but a great simpel copmparison, thank you.

All pretty close huh? My ToneX pack has captures with different toggle switch settings too. Same with the Kemper so you can get the frequencies you want out of it.

They all spund amaIng , but man that tone x has captured its DNA ...Crazy Fractal jas some very slight artifacting freq on the highs , kemper sounds good, but the last close, rhe tone x stole the show with depth and compression..wow

Glad you dig it! I actually tone matched the two rock again in my axe iii. Now it’s crazy close and almost indistinguishable.

I’ve owned all 3. I’ve come to realize that the difference in recorded tone is negligible. But the feel is the main difference. To me the Kemper felt more like a real amp. That’s why I ended up with the Kemper in the end.

You’re totally right. Feel is the most important to me. After creating the capture on my Fractal, it has a little more of that immediacy to the attack.

I disagree to some extent with all raves for the tonex. It sounfs great recorded but in real life whethrr you're listening or playing it sound or feels like a pedal. Its a harmonics, dynamics and saturation thing. The kemper is still the best mature choice i feel like. The tonex is just groundbreaking because of price for what you're getting.

Hi Jon, with the Axe-Fx did you match the cabinet or the entire chain? Cheers, D (For those not familiar with it, Tone Match works wonders for creating filtering that can take a Fractal model the last few steps closer to identical with a reference track. As Jon hinted, it’s not the equivalent of a dedicated capture playback machine.)

Yes, the entire chain! Same chain for all the captures minus the tonex because it didn’t require a mixer. I used an SM57 and Beyerdynamics 160 with all the same placements and settings. With the Fractal, it’s crazy the difference between my older presets and the tone match in terms of low end response and high end.

@rockstarjazzcat oh me too! I really want more Two Rock models in the fractal. Couldn’t I use Cab Lab to export the Tone Match IR as a was file?

@@JonKaneshiroGuitar right from within the block! from the tone match mini manual… Exporting Results Finally, Tone Match results can be exported for use as User Cab IRs. The EXPORT page of the Tone Match edit menu allows you to select a location, rename, and store the resulting file. This provides the capability for instance, to use multiple simultaneous Tone Match results in a single preset by loading them up in CAB blocks instead of using the Tone Match block, or taking advantage of other parameters only available in the CAB (air, room, delay, etc.).

That would be interesting to use for the Helix. It should export as an ir file right?

so first of all excellent work, I agree on the fact that they wouldn't stand out in the mix but even though I am a Fractal owner I can tell you that what I prefer is the tonex as it seems to me to be the most balanced of all while Fractal is a little the high end is more present and Kemper is a little darker in general.

They’re all great and do the job for sure! I think what I really like about the Fractal tone match is the sustain I get from the notes.

You'll never get the dynamic feedback of a real amp in a sim and I own both. I bought tonex and Helix and sold my amps and pedals... I then bought all my amps and pedals back and 10x more... The only way I use them now is with no cab into the effects loop of a Marshall Origin 50. I have a music studio with SSL gear and a set of Focal 80's which is what I ran sims through and those monitors are in the 10 ten best in the world. But still sterile dynamics wise... You miss all the transients, record both then look at the waveforms and you'll see freq in the amp wav that you won't get in the sim

Not really the point of the video. While it’s great to own analog gear, not everyone can do that all the time. Some people have children that can’t hear loud things while they nap, so we have to use amp modelers. A/Bing through my capture process with each modeler sounded amazing. In my opinion, I could care less about dynamic feedback as long as what I’m using sounds good and makes me want to pick up my guitar all the time.
