Comparing the Anthem MRX 1140 vs Buckeye Purifi 1ET400A - Home Theater #47

***TIMESTAMPS BELOW***
In this video, I answered a comment from a previous video asking if I had compared the Anthem against the Buckeye so I decided to see how that differed.

Point to note here is that the Anthem is 75 watts per channel while the buckeye is 225 watts per channel both with 2 channels driven. So seeing those dips at very high volumes should be expected as the Anthem is being pushed to its limits. Still, a very nice comparison!

Awesome for taking the time and the shout out! You are correct it's the MRX740. Hopefully you are enjoying the latest beta firmware. Now I just have to pick either class D or get the MCS225. Last question , sonically do you feel that they sounded identical regarding tone and tamber, that's by most direct concern. Thanks again!

No problem, as for the firmware I actually decided a long time ago to just stick to the actual releases and not try the betas and that has kept my system going with minimal glitches. That is a tough choice as I have heard good things about Anthem's amps too. I'm not a professional but to my ears they did sound the same in tone and tamber and like I mention in the video as the volume went higher the sound from the Anthem did change, as it started to sound a little harsher to me while the amp maintained that same sound signature at the higher volume. The only other suggestion I have is if you have a dealer near you that can allow you to test out the Anthem? I know Buckeye does have a return policy but there is a 10% restocking fee.

Using the dial is not the best way to test these amps. Without knowing the specs of the internal amps in the anthem, the input sensitivity can be lower than the buckeye. Meaning, at -10db, you may get 1.5v to drive the internal anthem amps to full power and the same 1.5v will not fully drive the buckeye. You may need 2.2v. Level match both amps first and see which one runs out of steam. You may not be able to stand the volume 😅. As I get better understanding of amps, I am realizing that you don’t need a lot of power to play at 85db (about 30watts with 86db speakers 12 feet away). But you need about +400 watt to hit 105db for instantaneous peaks in movies for the same setup.

I appreciate the insight, there is definitely more that I need to learn about amps. You are right about the volume as they both get really loud.

Great video, have you tried increasing the trim levels to compensate for the volume reduction? If so, how did it sound? Thanks.

Thanks for checking it out, I think that increasing the volume is similar to increasing the trim levels (increasing the trim levels would get me there sooner, but don't want to mess with what ARC suggests as it does sound good) but when it gets louder it sounds good.

@@RandomDistractionsYT Thanks for the response, I’m want to upgrade my Amp, (Basx) but my space/ decor probably won’t hold 60lbs. Hence looking into the class D. Is the sound different from your BasX? Not louder but different. I hear class D’s thin out the mids, and take away from the bass. Please advise. Thanks

@@Ijy10 Yeah, I actually talk a little bit about that in another video but to me, the Buckeye sounded more neutral and the bass was more nuanced and had texture to it which I preferred. I didn't feel like it took away from the bass and the mids sounded good to me. In comparison there did seem to be a warmness to the BasX, at least compared to the Buckeye but I actually preferred the more neutral sound of the Buckeye as it seemed clearer.

I can’t seem to get good volume on the 1140 without post processing. I’ll be at -15 and it’s pretty quiet. I’ve actually triggered protection at under -12. What am I doing wrong?

Sorry to hear that, there could be a few possibilities but what speakers are you using and are you only using the receiver to power those speakers? Have you double-checked the wiring? I once had wires crossed which caused some issues.

@@normrubio Hmm, well I looked up the speakers since I wasn't too familiar with them and they are pretty cool-looking ones that can handle a lot of power. While their sensitivity is good they are 4ohm speakers which can be tougher for receivers or amps to run. I'm guessing the receiver gets pretty warm during use? Do you happen to have a profile on your Anthem that is a 2-channel-only option (2.0)? If you do can you get louder in that mode? If you can I think that it just may be that the receiver on it's own can't handle the amount of power needed by all the speakers. The 1140 has a rating of 140w x 2 at 8ohms (170w x 2 at 6ohms) for the first 5 channels and then 60w x 2 (75w x 2 at 6ohms) for the remaining channels. They don't offer a rating at 4ohms unfortunately. This equals to about 400-500 watts total. As you stated you are using it to power 9 speakers so there isn't as much power to go around. This would be my best guess but would be interested to see if the 2.0 mode is any louder.

It depends on how many channels as it comes in monoblocks ($750) up to 3 channels ($1450) for the version I got (1ET400A). He has other options which use different amplifier modules as well.

Why not just swap out the xlr to rca cables and do a review then ?

Unfortunately, the only option is to use XLR to RCA as the Buckeye only has XLR inputs but the Anthem only has RCA outputs.
