    I decided I'm ok with the "NOT FOR RESALE" banner on the KDP proofs. It keeps me from accidentally selling a proof copy, which would be unfortunate if I made changes after printing the proof.

    I use Ingram spark specifically for the expanded distribution so I can work with libraries and book stores. I believe the color issue may be with the type of file that the cover is, at least that has been my experience, they require a different file than the others. I wish I wish I wish they were more user friendly Ingram is extremely difficult to work with, I know for a fact that you are not the only one

    This video was helpful, thank you! I've heard of Ingramspark and I'm staying clear away from them. Amazon's paperback I'm a little weary of trying only for the simple fact that they distort the content of my file by stretching it a little too much across the page but perhaps I'll give them a chance. I know CreateSpace before being taken over by Amazon KDP had amazing printing and the quality of paper was beautiful. Now,, B&N's printing, do they offer gloss? I prefer the glossy finish. I have my books published on as many publishing platforms as I can find for free in digital format but I'm struggling to find a great print edition. I used to go through Lulu but I DO NOT recommend them to anyone-not anymore for since their 2020 updates their rules and steps have gone to sh*t and I can't/won't guarantee what their print edition will look like now...

    The color issue is from your file and color space differences on your monitor. This is why its super important, when doing any design work, to use a color collaborated monitor and to ensure that your output file is in the correct color space.

  • @DarthCompton
    @DarthCompton4 жыл бұрын

    My best guess would be they aren't properly cleaning their surface finisher. Those shiny spots seem like they're leftover spots for the actual High Gloss finish, getting on the rollers or feeders. OOOOOOOoooor....could be just the matte finish, but there are extra splats getting on there (somehow, but possible if their machine's not running properly), so when it gets under the UV lights to dry the finish, the thicker spots are drying shinier. Just two ideas. I work in a print shop, so I'm pretty certain it's not the actual printing device (unless something's wrong with the cover stock, which I guess is possible, but unlikely), and one of the finishing devices. That said, glad I came upon this video, because I was curious how B&N's press quality is.

    Thanks for showing this to us. KDP uses a 55 lb paper, so that's pretty nice, and generally, their books seem of good quality. I have noticed, though, a good bit of warpage. Not sure why this is, but I've heard others note it as well; there's often a wave present when looking at the book edge-on from the right side, and my limited experience with hardcover was that the cover was somewhat warped as well. I'd be interested to know what you think of the durability of the spine and binding. Does it stand up to heavy use, and do the pages stay put? I almost wish we didn't have the glossy/matte option as sometimes I just can't choose. But, I'd like to see some other options, like a variety of paper weights, sewn binding for hardcovers, durable buckram cover (also for hardcovers), spiral bound (good for uses in which you want the book to lie flat during use, like notebooks, cookbooks, etc.), and staples (for low page count things like comics and small mags). Good to know that KDP has the best color. I wonder why this can be so variable. What I've noticed is that if you're working in a layout program, like Canva for instance, once you see the finished downloaded product as a PDF in Adobe programs, the color tone is starkly different. It would be nice if this could be more standardized from platform to platform, so we know what we're getting. I'd like to hear more about your experience with KDP matte. Will you never order it? I've also noticed some inconsistency--the areas of difference in finish you referred to--in the hardcover, but otherwise it seems pretty good. What did you mean about the finish coming off if you rubbed it? I've experienced a kind of rubbery feeling when touching the surface when the book is new and unhandled, but I haven't yet spent enough time with one printed this way to know if there's an issue with ink fastness. Anyway, congratulations on publishing your book, and all the best to you in your writing! Hope Vader's doing well.

    Hello, thanks for the video! I just had a conflict between Ingramspark and B&N. I knew that you shouldn,t do expanded distribution with KDP, because it meshes with Ingram, but wasn,t aware of the same situation with B&N, so then i asked myself do B&N press actually print their own book? Weird? I have my own ISBN (free in canada Yeah) and when I uploaded on Ingram I couldn,t because the ISBN was already registered by B&N????? Anyway got that figured out after talking to a 4th Ingram Spark customer service and filed a title transfer form which is going to take a month now.... arghhhh ..... Like you I think about royalties and upload direct to KDP and B&N for print. So when you upload do you follow a particular sequence 1-Ingram, 2-KDP, 3B&N to avoid any overlap? Did you have any experiences like this? Are there big differences in royalties between those 3? With Ingram do you do the 55% return and book destroy incentive? Thanks Love your video, Guy

    Hi. I'm sure you have more than enough experience to help me with this. I had a book cover drawn. No matter how I seem to resize it, it just won't fit into the guidelines for KDP Print. It's a bit too long and not wide enough. KDP said the size should be 11.376 x 8.250 but I'm not able to put those measurements in on Paint or any of the photo editors. Should I give these measurements to the illustrators to have her resize it to fit a 5 x 8 book or is there something else that I should do?

    KDP is giving you that problem? That’s not fun :/ I’m assuming it’s paperback, since you said KDP. Honestly, I haven’t messed around with anything on KDP in about a year, so I’m not sure if they’ve changed anything. When I had problems getting the cover size to work with Ingramspark I ended up doing what it sounds like you’re doing-trying over and over to get the measurements right in some sort of editor. I ended up giving up, and just asked my cover designer to go back and fix the dimensions for a small additional fee. However, with KDP you might be able to put the cover picture inside their cover designer tool. I’m assuming they still have that. That usually auto fits pictures. I have a video on how to print a proof copy on KDP that shows a little bit more about how that tool works. I think it’s about halfway through the video.

    londongirle3 Thanks. Yes that’s an old link and I forgot to update it. I don’t think you can use the same ISBN for KDP and IngramSpark. Its an irrelevant comparison because they all use a printing facility thats is closest to the customer to minimise shipping costs. And in certain cases Amazon will print on contract for IS orders if there is going to be a delay. What is true, though, is that Amazon printing facilities are generally, but not always newer laser tech than older IS Lightning Source printers. Only Amazon is confident enough of their quality by putting where the book was printed inside the back cover.

It’s obvious you don’t believe in books not published traditionally. You think people are naive and delusional and whatnot. So why keep watching self published focused videos and spewing your negativity? You are nothing but a troll. Your hate of self publishing isn’t gonna stop the masses. Ingram Spark charges to publish; a one time fee. But don't we get 100% royalties?

  • @CSWells-uq4jx

    @CSWells-uq4jx

    I believe so. It’s still self polishing platform. So, whenever one of your printed books is sold, you get the price of the book, minus the cost of the printing of the book as your royalties. At least, that’s my understanding. But KDP and Barnes & Noble press are the same way. At least, last time I checked. Now, if we’re talking e-books, that’s a different story. Honestly, I don’t much care for e-books. But I understand that they are the most popular medium nowadays. I just don’t see the point of staring at a screen any longer during the day than I already do.

    @@CSWells-uq4jx Amazon KDP is either 60% or 40%. for a paperback. And they take it off the top, (before the cost of production)... So far as the IngramSpark one time fee goes i'd say it's pretty inconsequential, considering you get 100% royalties from your IP....
