Very well spoken and fast. Ha ha. Since I’m familiar with both it reinforces what I already know. But I like the perspective. You are a delightful person. I just issue 2 versions(which are the same) of the same book with different isbn’s, and that way I get the best of both worlds. You have to pay to publish on Ingram but it’s only like 50 bucks. Both great companies but they shine in different and unique ways. Thanks!

Thank you, Emma. I will use both. KDP won't print children's books in 11 x 8.5 landscape. Ingram Spark will. As you said, KDP won't print hardcover. Ingram Spark will. So, there's good reason to use both.

Great video, Emma! Thanks for explaining! I've e-published a few books on carpentry on Amazon before, but may be moving onto a project with paperbacks available soon. A quick question: years ago, when Createspace was still a thing, a friend put the paranoia in me that by making print copies available on Amazon, you essentially had to consign future print rights of the whole book to Amazon. Is that still a thing? Does Amazon take away / claim any rights that would endanger possible acquisition by a traditional publisher somewhere down the line? I like the streamline process with Amazon, but I've always been terrified of losing publishing rights to them in the fine print somehow. Thanks again!

Thanks! The book content is still yours, so you can pull it whenever you want. If you sign up to being a part of Kindle Select (Kindle Unlimited) then your ebook is exclusive to them, but you can pull it from the program. If you use one of their ISBNs then you can only use it with them - that might make things a challenge, but you can still unpublish it and then republish elsewhere (although it wouldn't entirely vanish necessarily - could still be available through second-hand sellers). The bottom line is that you are the publisher and the book is your copyrighted property.

Hello Emma and thank you for video. Helpful. If still checking these comments, quick clarification: I intend to set up hardback first IS, then several weeks later go out with paperback on both KDP and IS. I would set up KDP first, I believe. I will not do preorder on any of these. I have own ISBN, and know has to be same for both KDP and IS on paperback version. Is there any reason I should transfer over KDP version rather than uploading all info on IS after KDP, using the same ISBN--or will IS not accept the self-bought ISBN that I already used on the KDP version? You talk of transferring over, and I find reference to such from IS online, but it says on the site that if have KDP version (and no expanded distribution) with own ISBN you don't need the 30 day transfer, you just upload all on their dashboard. Is that correct? Thank you.

Hello Emma, thanks for the video! I just had a conflict between Ingramspark and B&N. I knew that you shouldn,t do expanded distribution with KDP, because it meshes with Ingram, but wasn,t aware of the same situation with B&N, so then i asked myself do B&N press actually print their own book? Weird? I have my own ISBN (free in canada Yeah) and when I uploaded on Ingram I couldn,t because the ISBN was already registered by B&N????? Anyway got that figured out after talking to a 4th Ingram Spark customer service and filed a title transfer form which is going to take a month now.... arghhhh ..... Like you I think about royalties and upload direct to KDP and B&N for print. So when you upload do you follow a particular sequence 1-Ingram, 2-KDP, 3B&N to avoid any overlap? Did you have any experiences like this? Are there big differences in royalties between those 3? With Ingram do you do the 55% return and book destroy incentive? Thanks Love your video, Guy

It's up to you really, there's lots of ways to go about it. I have heard lately some people have had trouble combining the two, but see how you get on! Both of those options are good, and you can always change it in the future if you change your mind. And yes, the ISBN is specific to format.

Hi, yes a separate ISBN for each format (Kindle doesn't require one but other ebook vendors do). You can enable expanded distribution with Amazon but the royalties are very low compared to IS. Or you can use both together for the same format (and in that case they would have the same ISBN). However works for you!

You can, but it might be tricky to get the dates to tie up, you could set up IS a couple of days early and then press go on KDP when that day rolls round? Just be aware that sometimes the files don't go straight through and that might add complications if you want them to be the same. Or, set up KDP and then transfer the title to IS? that will transfer the date over?

As a newbie I did this. I then discovered there was some small print on IS saying if this book had been previously listed with Amazon IS will not publish it on Amazon for 12 months! Imagine my horror. However it initially appeared to have loaded with the new cover etc, but it is not through my existing author page but on my personal amazon account. More horror. Can you recommend what should be done to correct this so I can utilize KDP properly once more? If following your recs in vid to request IS to distribute your amazon book - will I still be able to have it in the new cover ? or should I correct it all when IS upload old version? Thank you for sharing your experience, Emma. I’ve published four children’s books with KDP. The first two books I published with KDP and used their free ISBNs. The second two books I published with KDP and used my own ISBNs. I recently republished those first two books and now all four books have ISBNs that are mine. My next step was going to be uploading my books to IngramSpark but after watching your video, I’m thinking I just need to reach out to IngramSpark and fill out a form to move the books over? Is that right? Then later, if I want to make a hardbound book, I’ll assign all four books new ISBNs for the hardbound version, and upload directly to IngramSpark. Also, what do you set your wholesale discount rate to? I was told industry standards are around 45-50%. Again, thank you. I appreciate it. Rachel

Hi Emma, thanks and the video was mostly helpful. BUT... I have a question. You say in the video to start with KDP first in order for Amazon to lead the way for Amazon sales (higher royalty). However, then you say, if you try to then list with Ingram, the process will fail because it will say, "sorry, ISBN already exists." So........If you list with KDP second in the process, and you DO NOT do a pre-sale, then who, theoretically, fulfills the book if someone purchases, for example, Book #1 on amazon? Thanks!!!

  • @EmmaRosenBooks

Amazon will fulfil their own orders unless they already have stock from Ingram, so if Ingram shipped some before Amazon 'took over' then they'll have to sell off first. If you list with KDP first it's a simple enough process to port the book over to IS and they're helpful in how to go about it (and then you can work with both companies that way too if that's how you want to do things). There's ways around however you want to launch your book

Thank you for this info. It's very clear. Except for one thing: If I publish a KDP paperback without exapnded dist. first, and then 2 months later publish the same ISBN paperback with IS, will IS reject it because it already exists on KDP? If so, then that means in order to take advantage IS paperback dist. network, I would have to transfer my KDP title and data to IS. This transfer would then take my book off of KDP, right...which would defeat the purpose of publishing IS later in order to get KDP 60% royalty on amazon sales, rather than IS's lesser compensation.
