Comparing Final Fantasy XIV and WoW | Raiding Progression

I was a hardcore raider in World of Warcraft for years, and now for FFXIV Endwalker I finally got to see how progression felt at the start of an expansion, what it was like to do fights fresh, and here I compare my experiences with the two. Happy Holidays all!

DESCRIPTION:
Final Fantasy XIV[b] is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods' blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.
The original Final Fantasy XIV, released in September 2010, was a commercial and critical failure. In response, then-Square Enix President Yoichi Wada announced that a new team, led by Yoshida, would take over and attempt to fix the issues with it. This team was responsible for generating content for the original version as well as developing a brand new game which would address all of the previous release's criticisms. This new game, initially dubbed "Version 2.0", features a new game engine, improved server infrastructure, and revamped gameplay, interface, and story. The original version shut down in November 2012 and was followed by an alpha test for Version 2.0.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. Set in the Warcraft fantasy universe, World of Warcraft takes place within the world of Azeroth, approximately four years after the events of the previous game in the series, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.[3] The game was announced in 2001, and was released for the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise on November 23, 2004. Since launch, World of Warcraft has had eight major expansion packs: The Burning Crusade (2007), Wrath of the Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), Mists of Pandaria (2012), Warlords of Draenor (2014), Legion (2016), Battle for Azeroth (2018), and Shadowlands (2020).
Similar to other MMORPGs, the game allows players to create a character avatar and explore an open game world in third- or first-person view, exploring the landscape, fighting various monsters, completing quests, and interacting with non-player characters (NPCs) or other players. The game encourages players to work together to complete quests, enter dungeons and engage in player versus player (PvP) combat, however the game can also be played solo without interacting with others. The game primarily focuses on character progression, in which players earn experience points to level up their character to make them more powerful and buy and sell items using in-game currency to acquire better equipment, among other game systems.

While you only get locked out after getting a drop in normal raids , savage works a bit different in that you'll be locked out after you clear regardless if you got a drop or not, however savage drop chests which can be used for a piece of gear corresponding to the class you're on atm, and you'll also get a page (token) which can be exchanged for loot after you collect a certain amount.

@@willyum_plays7750 If you run with a static group, it should still take 8 kills of each boss max to get your BiS, which is pretty nice compared to what it was like when I raided WoW way back in the day. But if you're just gonna go through PF, it might take a bit longer. The one big piece of advice WRT getting gear from savages is that you don't spend your pages (tokens/totems) from a certain fight until the thing you're buying is the last thing you need from that fight (in savage, fights drop specific types of gear, vs normal where they drop more types of tokens). Otherwise, you'll inevitably run into the situation where you buy (for example) boots with pages, and then you win the boot coffer next week and think "dang, I should've bought the gloves instead".

Aside from that you got more than enough time to get your savage gear, as it takes about 6 months for the next savage tier to get released, and that gear will stay BiS until the next tier is released. So you still got plenty time to get the satisfaction of getting that best gear and use it to beat stuff easier.

It is important to know that treatment is based on expectations. It is hard to be happy when you are a farm party and someone doesn't know anything about the fight. Also people who lie about their progression is the worst. Imagine people wanting to practice a "post-ads" phase, but you are dying repeatedly to mechanics at the start, therefore being unable to actually practice the phase they are at. Nobody gets mad when the expectations are what it is stated.

You mention being able to run until you win a piece in raid. This is only true in normal. In savage, you instead get a token much like a totem (called a "book" or "page"), and you can trade a certain number of these for any item you want that drops from that fight. But like totems, that's the failsafe, savage drops coffers as well that are how you get most of your gear in a typical team. Either way, in savage, once you kill a boss that week that's it. No more chances even if you lose the loot rolls. (But at least you always get those tokens!) A typical team gets best in slot in around 8-10 weeks. 15 weeks for a slow team. Note that those who have already cleared for the week can still come help you, but fewer coffers will drop. At 4-7 people who are not locked out you get 1 chest instead of 2 (each chest usually has 2 items). At 0-3 you get no drops. But anyone who isn't locked out *always* gets that page. You'll often see parties in party finder advertised as "2 chest" for savage fights, which indicates they expect that only people who are not locked out for the week will join. The game tells you when you enter the fight how many chests your team is eligible for, so people can't pull a sneaky on ya. Another nice thing is that each instance is truly independent. You can clear fights 1 and 2 with your team, start progging 3 with them, then after they're done for the week you can go into party finder for fight 3 just fine. This is in stark contrast to WoW where the entire (mythic) raid tier locks you to a single multi-boss instance for the full week, so if your team is out of hours then you're shit out of luck.

Thanks for the info, I haven't progressed on savage yet, so I wasn't aware of all the details, I was going off my personal experiences up to this point! I am guessing they limit the chests that way because if you have 4 people that cleared it they didn't want two chests to be split amongst 4 people? I am wondering what the reason for the change is as well for the loot rules between normal and savage is. I am looking forward to experiencing this first hand!

I agree with all other points, however: I think you can't compare WoW and FF14 gear progression 1:1, gear has been a lot bigger part of WoW since forever with more implications for your gameplay (set effects, legendary effects, trinkets, secondary stats that transform your gameplay + the expansions current (and terrible as of the last 3 years) system flavor.) Progressing/improving your character power in WoW has been the core of the game for 16 years now and arguably the biggest reason for many to play it ad Infinitum, FF14 does not focus as much on this. What's better depends ultimately on your own tastes. What's quite funny to me though is that WoW abandoned the well liked wotlk way of endgame progression (you know, the one where RNG couldn't cuck you as hard and you'll eventually get everything you want) which FF14 took inspiration from...

  • @willyum_plays7750

    @willyum_plays7750

I think that because gear can have such wild implications on your gameplay in WoW, that making it be a hassle to obtain is a negative. I can recall several times when I wanted a trinket that literally would transform the way I went about my rotations... and it wouldn't drop for a very long time. What stung even more was when the next tier came out shortly after I finally got the trinket and I would need to replace it. It just felt... like... what was the point , ya know? Replacing the badge system with the RNG loot vault was.... I hated that. I much prefer being able to pick what gear I want to aim for, and just go for that over being annoyed week after week when the vault offers me a bunch of gear that I don't want or need.

FFXIV focuses on deterministic gear so that there is an endpoint in your gearing progression. This is so that when you hit your end point you could start working on another class or even go and take a break from the game for a bit to play other games. This is very much supported by the design ethics of Yoshi-P, because a player that truly burns out never returns, while a player that takes a break will eventually return when more of what they want to do comes out. WoW goes with gear having such wide variance because the eternal hunt for gear is meant to keep you eternally subbed and giving them money. They do not want you to play other games, WoW is supposed to be your forever game. This is also why they design systems such to inflict a feeling of having to play eternal catchup. You are not supposed to ever stop the grind. This is why you get Diablo style set effects, diablo style legendary items with stupidly low drop rates, trinkets with diablo style procs, and minor secondary stats that you can simply stack stupid high. To give you something to chase. This is also why Titanforging was a thing. They do not ant you to have deterministic gear because that means there is a end to the grind.

Just try it out, you'll find the occasional passive aggressive dork but overall the community is super chill as long as you join the right group (don't go into farming groups when you just barely cleared a fight and don't really know the mechanics that well yet and don't do logruns if you are not pulling high numbers), you'll be just fine. Healing this tier has a big responsibility too, besides just the occasional shields and regens, there are some aoe's that hit like a truck and p3s makes you do a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with healing. It's legit so much fun, i love raiding in this game.

I think the thing that make progress more enjoyable in ff14 is that the fight has very little rng involved and the boss make everyone test every move pretty quickly(often all the raid has to do it at the same time). In wow it's not rare that u are 10 pull in and still someone in the raid has to experience a key role to the fight like soaking a particular debuff etc. or u are in a very intense healing phase and ur healer get fuck up from a random debuff or spell that u don't know it's coming other then a dbm cd meanwhile in ff14 most of the time strange debuff or spells are role specific.

If you're the fast learner in your group, you'll always be waiting ten times the number of pulls for the slowest learner to finally get it so your group can move on. In WoW, there is a somewhat random / small chance that there will be a pull where the weak link just doesn't get tasked with doing something too important, so you can finally carry him and move on. Of course with only 8 people on the team, carrying makes a lot less sense in FFXIV, but it can be a point of frustration if you're the best member of the team, or probably the worst member as well. Nobody likes feeling like they are the one holding everybody else back, but Savage truly makes every person learn how to do every mechanic because there just aren't any freebies, and while the DPS checks are all super lenient, they aren't lenient enough to drag a dead person for the whole fight.

At the end of a raid tier (aka near the beginning of the next raid tier), the loot limitations get released and it becomes 100% farmable to allow people to farm for the glam. If you die after the penalty has worn off you only get the first level which is the 25% reduction. XIV is pretty chill, because you always know how many more runs you'll have to do in order to get what you want, and it's never too many, maybe with the exception of Extreme Trial mounts where if you're unlucky, you'll have to collect 99 tokens, but I wouldn't want that to be any easier TBH. If raiding is all you're really interested is, it also means that you'll sooner or later run out ofthings to really do in the game once you have everything, this can be a drawback for some, but that's where the unthinkable happens, where Yoshida says "Nothing more to do? That's cool, feel free to unsubscribe, go try some other games and come back when there's more, we'd be happy to see you back." And it's like ??? OTHER GAMES? I play an MMO what's this "other games". Think the general idea atm. is that P3S is technically harder to mechanically execute than anything P4S throws at you, the last boss doesn't seem worse and definitely isn't the same kind of deal, just has the door boss niche. So this Tier kind of sits right at being somewhere in the early halfway through Mythic-ish difficulty. Ultimates are more something you'd wanna try to eventually do if you like something that's going more towards the End-of-Mythic type Encounters with the extra caveat of rapidfire bosses.

You've done the same only in the direction of not being fair to WoW on your point of gearing. Savage gearing works very differently to normal. Yes it is still easier with books/tokens in ff, but that's still 4/6/8 weeks of clearing a fight to get 1 piece of gear if you're unlucky. In FFXIV the raids are NOT balanced to require you to be in full BiS. In FFXIV getting the clear is all that matters. Afterwards you just farm the content as much as you are willing to do. Or if you aren't interested in the gear you can just wait till the odd number patches to get your gear through the catch up mechanics. Or you do what most people that only care about the raid content and don't give two shits about the gear. Normal raids are pretty much puggable LFR bosses and Extreme trials, while somewhat more difficult, in no way compare to turn 2/3/4 savage bosses or ultimate, or WoW's mythic bosses (except maybe like the first 3 of any given tier?), to drive your comparison. Should've waited a few more weeks to make this video chief and it would have been actually interesting to watch. This way it just feels like it's capitalizing on the current EW hype. I could make this video in reverse and basically go "I had to farm BiS gear in FFXIV and clear the current savage tier to unlock ultimate, but in WoW when I got to max level I could just queue for the raid??? That's crazy!!!" Completely meaningless apples to oranges comparison. Sorry for the harsh language.
