Today we're comparing brands of hay from Amazon! I tested five of the most common brands of guinea pig hay (or rabbit hay!) I found on Amazon. Hay is an extremely important part of a guinea pig or rabbits' diet and needs to be at least 80% of their diet!

I ordered KMS Hayloft’s bluegrass hay after seeing it on your channel. We got it in Monday and the girls love it. I feel like I am wasting less. And the best part is my daughter’s allergies haven’t flared at all.

Thanks so much for this! I have been buying Kaytee for two years, and it used to smell really fresh, and my Stella loved it. But lately it hasn't smelled at all, and is VERY dusty, with only very short sticks. Worse is the fact that Stella isn't eating as much as she used to, which is why I looked for a clip by you about the best hay...

Thank you so much for doing this! I really needed this before I wasn't using super good Quality Hay, the piggies were still eating enough hay and everything but I just realized that I could really improve their hay and you helped me with that so much I was like trying to do a research and figure out different hays to buy for them and you just helped me so much for that thank you so much I really appreciate you and your channel!!!! But who’s pet care is prefect right!?🙂🙃🥰🤩💞 (I wouldn’t say it was SUPER bad quality like it was kinda dusty and not super green and it was just grass) can you feed just grass hay to guinea pigs? I have tryed the oxbow western hay, and my girls didn’t like it very much.... so im more leaning to the American pet was it? For my girls, did that hay (American pet) have little fuzzys I don’t know a better way to say that 😂 in that hay??

I hav also tryed kaytee hay, my girls HATED IT SO MUCH!!!! I totally agree with you on thoughs to hays!!! I think I will try that American pet Timothy gold that sounds like such a great deal for 5.99 I will just see what my pigs like the best. I agree with you on you do the hay that your pets eat the most, that’s so helpful for me! I will try the oxbow, American pet gold hay, and my usual hay!!

If I do use my usual hay I would by the oxbow hay and mix thoughs to so it’s healthier for my piggies, they liked when I mixed thoughs to hays together but they didn’t like just the western oxbow hay alone! Thank you again!! I also want you to know I did do plenty of research before I got my two pigs, I didn’t wanna come off as seeming as I didn’t do research (I did LOTS!!) by saying all that stuff about the hay!

Thank you for doing this! I have had my piggies for about 2 months now and am having such a struggle with hay. It is quite possibly more of a "me" struggle than one for my guineas. However, it is difficult for me to tell if they are eating enough hay. I started off with Oxbow Timothy hay which they really like. Then I ordered the Sampler box from Small Pet Select. They seemed to like it, but I wasn't completely sure if they were eating enough. I reduced the amount of pellets they are getting a day to 1 Tbs vs. 2 Tbs. and that seemed to increase their hay consumption. I bought a bag of the Oxbow Timothy again to see which one they seemed to prefer, and it was difficult to determine. They do seem to get more excited about the Oxbox brand. Sorry for the really long comment, but do you have any tips on how to determine if they are eating enough hay?

  • @TheTinyHerd

I like to use hay bags because I can tell how fast they're going through it! Honestly as long as you're refilling the rack daily (depending on the size of it. Mine are about the size of my pigs lol) then they're probably eating enough! I would also keep an eye on poops - wet or mushy poops means too much veggies or not enough hay!

@@TheTinyHerd Ok, thanks. I tried hay bags for a while, but they didn't really eat the hay out of them. I had the most success with putting it in a pile on the floor, but I didn't like how much of a mess that made. I bought small litter boxes and just fill those up. They like to sit in the hay and eat it. I don't like how much hay ends up being wasted and it also may be difficult for me to tell how much they are eating since it is a pretty large amount to fill the boxes. Their poops look good though.

  • @TheTinyHerd

I would say as long as poops look OK and you see them eating hay often they're fine!

  • @TheTinyHerd

They're nice as a treat, but they can't replace loose hay. They're also pretty expensive. They need the long stalks of loose hay to wear down their teeth correctly and to get the fiber they need.

I’m surprised that Oxbow hay looked okay. I stopped purchasing from them because here in Canada I was getting bags of straw, and not hay. After buying, returning, buying, returning I gave up and switched to Standlee Timothy hay. Which comes in 10 or 25 pound boxes. So for my 6 piggies it works wonderfully.

My piggies won’t eat the Kaytee Timothy hay or the Vita Kraft. They are so rough and feels like straw. They did like the Oxbow hay and the small Pet select. The Oxbow is expensive. I like the Small Pet Select the best. I mix the Meadow grass with the Timothy Hay.

I am definitely going to keep the American pet hay in mind for emergencies in the future! Sometimes you just need a small bag to get ya by. Also I like always having a small bag here unopened in case of emergencies(if we ever have to evacuate our house or something…I am paranoid like that…lol).
