Thanks HotS for this frank reaction. Watching Dimash's growth as an artist is a fascinating study. These vids are a timeline of his progression from an aspiring musician to a megastar in a nutshell. To me, Dimash's music choices clearly shows his classical training and family life as the most influencing factors. I've decided not to argue with opinions or speculations on those choices. But I think to give voice to the absent subject of this speculation its fair to share a few thoughts in response. Obviously Dimash is an anomaly given his unusual ability to manipulate the vocal instrument in ways most singers don't or can't. This anomaly allows him to do quirky/weird things vocal coaches, seasoned musicians he's worked with, even his parents can't explain, other than wonder and speculate upon. Aaron Neville who sings like he's auto tuned is a perfect example of such anomalies in the human gene pool. Yet its his own God given singing voice. The late Dolores O'Riordan was the same. How do we explain these anomalies? Simple. These individuals have/had special talents they seriously honed to perfection. Sadly, our dependence on technology has robbed us of the ability to believe in the human power to command a feat greater than technology but the will to do so is weak so our go-to is to assume and then rationalise that assumption which leads us down a slippery slope. We forget that our current knowledge is limited which is why I admire how Dimash makes education a priority and experiments with his voice bc his findings will answer a lot of the questions ppl have about voice integrity and the role of technology to submit to the will of man, not the other way round. Some cultures where chanting prayers is a tradition gives the same autotune effect. I have many Muslim friends who do the same when singing/chanting without any electronic device. Growing up in an Islamic culture I'm sure Dimash has chanted prayers since childhood and would've cut his teeth on its human auto tune technique and has used it in his concerts. I'm partial to the performance of Chornobrivtsi in Kiev. His natural speaking voice to me hints at the hidden depths of his capabilities that can only surface with dedication to practice and studying his own vocal instrument. There are things our brains can't compute bc our perceptions are limited to what we know through our senses or from education. But the mind is much more powerful when the will to master a feat is on par. Dimash's vocal chords are an anomaly in the singers gene pool but like Aaron, I think he can only prove himself through more live performances in small halls without a mic to appease the skeptics. And yes, precisely bc he is from our species, knowing why he makes the choices he makes re music would help. We use technology everyday to enhance our living experience and even tho' D likes to experiment with his voice i think he'd use autotune if its a value added choice. To think Cher's massively autotuned Believe was a hit, no one complained! That's why it seems petty whenever coaches critique D on the strength of a popular assumption based on limited knowledge without the science or cultural context elements. I'm not anti pitch correcting technology if it improves the sound for our listening pleasure. But we must not close our minds to the differences that frames the world that uniquely talented individuals bring nor diminish the importance of those talents just bc the only way we know such techniques is with digital technology. Their rare abilities sets them apart for sure but that rarity is the difference that highlights the beauty of our diversity.

Dimash is human...been listening to him since 2017...not interested in his nit picking and could care less to listen so I can nit pick Dimash too...

There is something that most Do Not know, and has Not already been mentioned here. There were two recordings done of the last Screaming performance. The first performance was done for a live audience, Dimash had a wardrobe malfunction (the belt for his pants fell off, it was very obviously dangling behind him, like a tail, lol). he grabbed the belt and held his pants, while continuing to sing (ever the professional). Another second recording (apparently without audience and with the belt secured, lol) was done after, for broadcast. It seem like the broadcast version was a post-production mix of the two performances.

And I also don’t think Dimash was tired or sick here that he had to resort to screaming or use auto tune. This mainstream- song was written for Dimash to make him better known in the English-speaking world. His first English official MV - kzread.info/dash/bejne/mXqms7qceLbWYsY.html was previously released on May 24, 2018 on his 24th birthday. In the MV he plays the piano, drums and sings his own backup. Later for the stage the song was rearranged: * Screaming, "Idol Hits" 2018 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3ab18eAlMrOZMo.html * Screaming at Kremlin Moscow live Concert 2019 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/mWuet8OGpNvZd5s.html * Screaming, Dimash Digital Show 2021 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gmx-r8uwibGuhMo.html This performance always makes me a little sad because unfortunately there was no live audience (pandemic) Dimash always sings this song with his Dears at his concerts. * Screaming | Beijing 2021(phantastic new version) - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y21k24-qhc2ukbw.html * Behind the scenes "Screaming" MV - kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJp6vKyJg9WfZso.html * Behind the scenes “Idol Hits” - kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJqMuZasqq_AgLA.html 👉This song is on his first album 'ID'. The album went platinum in 37 seconds, 3 times platinum in 47 minutes and 5 times platinum on the first day in China (album platinum: 200,000 units, single platinum: 400,000 units).

That's not the reason the Chinese did it. This is not the same performance where he lost his belt, they rerecorded it and released the second one. They sometimes love to do it for ornament (why they think it's more beautiful than his natural voice is another question, it's just trendy now to do it I guess). Here they did it in the easiest part of the song, not because Dimash needs tuning, as the rest of the song shows. Here is an explanation by means of spectral analysis. kzread.info/dash/bejne/n5Oms8Sxc6WalLw.html.

❤️ Thank you for your reaction! I’ve always noticed the autotune/pitch correction on the last Screaming performance and no other vocal teacher EVER points it out. It’s like they don’t want to mention it so they stay in good terms with their viewers. They know they’re gonna get a bit of hate, but you want to give facts, which I love. If you can’t hear the autotune, I’m sorry but something is wrong 😂 I do feel though that in the last performance, Dimash was “shouty” as a choice. I don’t believe he was tired or ill because he smashed the rest of the song like nothing, it also added to that version imo. If you think otherwise, I’d love to hear why. Thank you!!! ❤️

  • @HofTheStage

    @HofTheStage

    2 жыл бұрын

I'm pretty sure most of others didn't mentioned autotune because they didn't want to make the audience mad :D I still think the "shouty" parts were due to the lack of breath support, again, might be that he was short on breath because of dancing. For headvoice you actually often don't use as much breath as for chest and belt, so he slayed everything else except those couple of parts in the higher chest voice.

Thank you for your wise words! I'm so tired of people being so dramatic about the use of autotune; it's not a magic tool that can make you sing well, it only corrects the pitch. If a singer uses a bit of autotune, it doesn't mean they couldn't sing without it. Many times it's used to blend all the tracks well and to make it sound "perfect" to our ears. If Dimash sang a couple of notes off, then what? I'm a professional musician; if someone would analyse all of my live mistakes and critique me, my career wouldn't exist xD

He's awaiting surgery for a deviated septum I believe which is causing all kinds of breathing problems. I was surprised by this song too, knowing about the autotune laws in China I didn't know if it was just effects put on to maybe bring the song more up to date but then he also had some issues with Stranger performed in the Shine Super Brothers show where he obviously ran out of breath at the last note. It's a shame that we expect him to be perfect as he already holds himself to impossible standards and he is human like all of us. It's about time he gave himself a break, went and got the surgery done with a decent recovery period afterwards, but with all the work commitments he has between now and the end of April he could be suffering for a few months yet.

I wasn't aware of the surgery at the time of recording the reaction. What are you talking about autotune laws in Chine? I find it hard to believe that there is a law about such thing... And yes, he needs proper rest because he might lose his voice completely if he doesn't stop to recover... It wouldn't be the first time big singers took a break and it was much needed (John Mayer, Adele, Celine Dion just to mention a few)

@@HofTheStage there are all sorts of weird performance laws in China, lip syncing is also banned and any changes to performance content has to be pre approved by the government before release. Unless he has the surgery done in China in January then there's not a chance he's going to fit it in as he's apparently opening the Winter Olympics in Beijing in February, he's in Dubai for two weeks in March and then (Covid allowing) completing the Arnau World Tour in April.

Chinese just looooove autotune. If anybody adds it, those are the Chinese producers, because it's idolish and trendy. Dimash never does it in his own productions or performances. I don't know who says about such laws, but that's not true at all. Lip syncing isn't allowed only in commercial performances (solo concerts) and it only applies to local artists The surgery, on the other hand, is very real and I hope he does it soon. And yes, it causes breathing and resonance problems. But it shouldn't cause him to lose his voice.

You are right: the Beijing version wasn't live. There used to be a another version of this, a fancam version, where he was holding a microphone with a huge logo of the TV station on it. During that version his belt came off. Well, that version, which is no longer available on KZread (I wonder why; there is a version on KZread available that is spliced, so one second he's holding a normal microphone, the next second he holds the microphone with the huge logo), was 100% exactly the same as this one; each breath, each ad lib was one on one the same. So, that was proof that it was a lip synched performance, but they took it off KZread. This is a fantastic version, though (actually my favorite), just not live.

I hate auto tune and what I hate more is how producers will do it without the artist's permission. I found out recently that someone has auto tuned Simon & Garfunkle 'Bridge Over Trouble Water'!!! There are people making decisions on performances that should not be made and especially when the artist does not want it. Dimash does not want auto tune, but there are many people that make performance decisions. The control should be in Dimash's hand only.

I think, the autotuned beginning is a choice of purpose to give a technical character to this song and show a great difference to the operatic part. I really love, how much Dimash is enjoying that performance in Beijing and his voice. It was his first live performance after two years in China and because of the break caused by the pandemic.

I have a thought about that one word where you said it was obvious about the autotune, in the word "part".... I went to listen to the beginning of the song more closely and found that it didn't sound wierd. It sounded wierd in your version.... but not in the one I listened to at Dimash's channel on youtube. I wonder if the video you listened to had some afterproduction done to it... because the sound seemed more even for the entire song in the version I listened to. I have no idea. Could also be difference due to streaming and such things. However, what I was about to actually say....before I got distracted... was that you should listen to his song Tugan zher where he plays with the sound of the mike so it sounds artificial. Just a fun little thing he did in that song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fI2opaObkdPPgrw.html it's around 2.25 seconds in

This, I think is in the beginning of the Super Brothers series of shows he has been involved in, in China, where he was invited to participate in a long competition of a variety of artists of various skills, not just music, and they did not allow Dimash or anyone to do their thing. He has just left that program early as he did with the Worlds Best competition, where he said he would not enter another singing competition. Dimash will only work in environments, it seems, where he is satisfied with the results, and it promotes creativity and excellent artistry. Now that we have seen the excellence that he and his people produce, I can assume that in future he will be even more guarded in what he may be invited to perform in.
