I have grown little gem, red gem, lollo Rosso, lollo blonde, red romaine, red iceberg, Webb’s, black seeded Simpson, red oak leaf, green oak leaf, red and green salad bowl. My favorite of all is black seeded Simpson, it has the best flavor in my opinion, it is lovely to eat undressed or with a little olive oil and a little lemon juice. Many varieties have me reaching for the salad dressing or mayonnaise, this one doesn’t. It grows well and does not act as a magnet for slugs and snails like some varieties do and is quite quick to germinate. It matures quickly and is slow to bolt and has an amazing vibrant green color. My favorite, I love it. The other variety I grow regularly is red iceberg, it will grow in a poly tunnel in winter, is good for autumn planting under cover, has a crunchy texture and has a much better flavor than regular iceberg, it is more like a romaine for flavor but does not go bitter like many romaine types do when left to stand. Based on this video I will give marvel of 4 seasons a go. I am also trying red cimmaron romaine and red velvet this year but they are not big enough to pick yet.

We mostly pick cut-and-come-again style so we like Salad Bowl Red and Green, Marvel of 4 Seasons (English translation of Merveille de Quatre Saisons) and Freckles. For a hearting lettuce, Amaze is a good red coloured Little Gem type.

I live in Aurora Oregon zone 8b. Our springs are a bit tricky because of the temperature swings being a bit extreme. This Spring we had a silver thaw and were without power for 8 days. One month later we were in the high 80's for 2 weeks which is hot for our early spring. If I grow my lettuce in a container then I can move it to fit the many moods of mother nature. Merveille de Quatre Saisons has been an unexpected favorite for the last 3 years. In 2020 I grew.... Endive Frisee Romaine Tri-Color blend Merveille Lettuce Buttercrunch Lettuce Annapolis Lettuce Solar Flare Lettuce New red fire lettuce Corn Salad Miner's Lettuce Tango Lettuce Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce I really enjoyed the Merveille de Quartre Saisons, Buttercrunch and Romaine tri-color. I disliked the Endive, corn salad, Tango lettuce and black seeded simpson. In 2021 I grew.... Annapolis Red Romaine Lettuce (Yes) Merveille Lettuce (Yes) Buttercrunch Lettuce (Yes) Winter Density Lettuce Seed (Yes) Skyphos Butterhead Lettuce (fall) (Yes) Harmony Butterhead Lettuce (fall) (Yes) Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce (No) Tango Leaf Lettuce (No) Jericho Lettuce Seed (Summer) (No) Salanova Red Sweet Crisp L. (Summer) Red Mountain Celtuce (No) and this fall I also grew.... Annapolis Red Romaine Lettuce (Yes) Merveille Lettuce (Yes) Buttercrunch Lettuce (Yes) Winter Density Lettuce Seed Skyphos Butterhead Lettuce (fall) (Yes) Harmony Butterhead Lettuce (fall) (Yes) Hanson Improved Crisphead Lettuce Crisphead Great Lakes 118 Lettuce Landis Winter Lettuce Butter King Lettuce Tomorrow I'll go out to taste test the last 4 varieties of lettuce and get back to you with the results. GREAT LAKES 118 CRISPHEAD WAS THE BEST. Sweet, very crispy, nice strong flavor and "Leaves" you wanting more. Butter king was fine. Landis was a bit bitter, Hanson Improved is what I call a filler (nice texture not much flavor) Harmony is good and Skyphos is good with a beautiful color to add to the salad. I will add that my brother came over and tasted all the lettuce and he likes the winter density. BTW a seed grower in CA swears by the Great Lakes to give you a nice flavor even with the heat of summer.

That is quite an assortment of lettuces to pick from. I watched the video twice and still can't pick a favorite. I do like a red or purple lettuce for it's color in a salad. I also like a little crunch along with the leafy type. They all look delicious. I can't wait until the weather cools so I can grow some lettuce too. Great video. Thanks for sharing. I'm not big on lettuce. My favorite lettuce is Swiss Chard because it grows a full year before it bolts, it will grow through the heat of the summer, and survive negative temps here. Baker Creek gave me Paris Island Cos last year with a seed order, so I grew it in spring. It was a great lettuce! Semi-heading, good crunch. The packet says bolt-resistant, but everything bolts here eventually. I like that I could cut the heads an inch from the soil and they would grow right back until it got too hot for it. When it bolted, the plants grew 5 feet tall, covered in blooms. They were so pretty and fed tons of pollinators.

Good video, thanks for sharing. We grow several types of lettuce here, but we don't find all the seeds you mentioned here in Belgium. I use some of them often for a particular recipe ("romaine" for Caesar salad, Iceberg for "Waldorf" salad...). In autumn, we grow several types of chicory because more cold resistant (Castelfranco is wonderful). We plant "Merveille d'hiver" in octobre, which stay without growing through winter and grow later during early springtime. Unhappily, you have preferred not to prononce "Merveille des quatre saisons" :-) :-) lol (french language is complicate :-). Have a nice day

Lollo means grandfather in Tagalo (Philippines and I think also Italy). My favorite loose leaf is early prizehead (harder to find) and of course black seed simpson, Buttercrunch an May Queen I grew the latter a few years ago, it did great but hard to find. Muri a summercrisp type has good heat tolerance and seems to be somewhat like head lettuce and loose leaf. Batavia type (I think) developed in France. Very good.

Well, take care of your health first, and the rest will take care of itself. When you mentioned pouring hot grease over Black Seeded Simpson, it sure brought back memories. My mom used to pour hot bacon grease over their Black Seeded Simpson lettuce. I figured it was something she picked up from her mom. It's been interesting to read what types of lettuce other folks like.

I'm actually watching this hoping to see if I see my favorite kind of lettuce. I don't know what kind it is, but I know what it looks like. It is very frilly/wrinkly with red tips, but not the kind in spring mix at the grocery store. There's a lady at the farmer's market in town who sells premade salads, and the lettuce in there is the best I have ever had. Next time I go, I'm going to ask her what kind it is because I want to grow my own.

Merveille Des Quatre Saisons means The Miracle of Four Seasons. In Europe by far the most popular ones are Crystal and Butterhead, but somehow they have larger and richer heads than what you are showing here

I would be curious to know which one kept best after cut? Most of these seem like a lot of lettuce to use at once. I grow little gem so it is easier to use up fast.

Great point on the Little Gem being user friendly! Yes, they are a lot at once, but with most of these, you can harvest the outer leaves as they grow if you want. I didn't do a comparison on how long they last, but that would make a good video. It has been my experience that none of them last as long as I would like.

As for loose lear type it would be early prize head mixed with some black seed simpson butter crunch would be one (I send seeds to a church in Zambia, Africa and they alwas ask for butter crunch. I alo like Muir a summer crisp and crisp head. Muir is the best of both worlds, head and loose leaf in that the leafs are crisp but do not form heads. Leave it to the French.

I mixed some used soil with some other new soil (pro mix), and fertilized at the time of planting. I don't fertilize much after that.

Hi very nice video.. I am from south india, kerala. Here the weather is hot everyday(365 days). Can i grow may queen lettuce here? If i cant, what lettuce you suggest to grow here?... ❤

If it is hot every single day, I just wouldn't grow lettuce. Lettuce starts to get bitter when the weather is not. I have seen some people that grow it indoors with air conditioning though.

How about nutrition? Is lettuce more than just water? I hear mixed things ...compared to say kale and collard greens or mizuna etc.

I haven't really done the research on nutrition, but my guess is that lettuce might be less nutritious....but that is just a guess.

Not be an ass, but literally every type of lettuce you grew is trash. Try Eazy Leaf or Salanova. Anything else is just 2nd rate at this point.
