I still have the Mk1 Triumph Explorer 1200 (2012), and it has been the absolute best of motorcycles to date. 70K KMS of which 37K+ KMS has been around Ireland alone. Up and down some pretty difficult, testing, trying roads for some wild camping etc., plus good highway riding. My opinion (mine only), is that just like BMW drivers, you have the same ilk of BMW adventure riders……entitled!!!! I cannot wait for the new 2022 Tiger 1200…… main reasons why I selected the Triumph over a BMW? Comfort, reliability (electronics), frugal fuel, maintenance costs (have done most of the maintenance myself), triple sound (exhaust), and overall not acting like a BMW prat owner. Top heavy? It has never bothered me. - I’m 6’4”, 110kgs, riding mostly with pillion, and camping gear……could not ask for a better bike…….roll on the 2022 explorer !!!!!!!

I have a 2020 tiger 1200 explorer and it is an absolutely awesome bike. Comfortable, lots of torque in sport mode particularly, some off road ability in that mode, and it always has more to give for passing, even at some pretty good speeds. My eye wanders to a scrambler once in awhile for a different riding experience, but if you only have the space or budget for one bike, the tiger is an excellent choice. I have heard the new 2022 is even more well balanced than mine, but as a tall rider, I don’t find it very top heavy. For smaller riders, consider the Tiger 900.

Excellent comparisons! Once the Pan America is out of it's power band much changes. An snip here from a Revzilla article says "As an experiment we did a roll-on test at 60 mph, both bikes in top gear and spinning almost exactly 3,500 rpm: The 1250 GS walked away like the Pan America was towing a trailer." I think out of the four bikes presented here, I'd have the Triumph. However it is cost prohibitive for me so I'd end up with the Honda.

Great video as always, I personally chose the R1250GS (not Adventure). My off-road riding is no more than a gravel road. But the way GS behaves in town and low speed also almost no dive front suspension is ideal for two up and luggage riding. My personal experience with the attitude of HD dealers hasn’t been great either. Also I believe there’s a lot of issues with Honda quality lately. ( I had a Rebel 1100 DCT for a few months, paint in the forks came off and the were a lot of bubbles in the engine casing) and not to mention the awful suspension )

@@BikesILike I didn’t want to bore you but since you care about the details: I put a deposit for the Honda start of February last year, it was delivered to my place mid lockdowns in August. Next day I found out that the paint from the bottom end of the fork was chipped. There was no sign of impact and I could chip more and more paint with my fingernails. There was little adhesion to metal. Dealer didn’t take responsibility at all. I looked in more detail and the engine casing paint was so thin and there were visible bubbles in the car throughout. I wish I had photos. The suspension was terrible I’m 80kg but the rear suspension was bottoming out on the kerb out of my garage and annoyingly uncomfortable when riding with my wife. Having owned two of these bikes, I can tell you from experience that none of them get anywhere close to the stated MPG. When I owned the HD PAS, I was getting about 34.5 MPG (US), with the BMW GSA, I'm getting about 38 MPG (US). I severely disappointed in the range of the HD. I suspect a lot of this has to do with how high they run the compression ratio. I also really wonder how well it's going to do with various fuel mixtures around the globe. Bottom line, specs are one thing, but real-life adventure tells the true story.

The only problem I have is I have no way of really knowing actual figures unless I've owned all the bikes I'm reviewing, so I'm left relying on manufacturers figures. The Tiger 1200 has a really nice fit and finish. It’s upgrades are a plus. The Pan America needs time to sort things out and lacks service history along with fit and finish as the other bikes. The Honda Africa Twin is easy to ride with all day reliability. Japan knows how to build good engines with value added features for the most bang for the money. The GS runs on it’s lengthy history which doesn’t always translate to a better product as it should. Instead of leading, BMW for years gotten complacent with it’s entire line. Maybe this is a smart thing, as they get to see what others are doing. In 22 BMW finally brought some tech and cockpit upgrades to it’s R and K touring line. Appreciated but not ground breaking. In 23 the GS is expected to get some weight reduction and other tech upgrades. Hope it’s exciting. Just my .2. Excellent commentary as always.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing! The drag race will actually be far closer for a number of reasons. The Honda's DCT already has a hand on the next gear, it's the lightest and its gearing is low. The Tiger and BMW don't need to shut their throttles when changing up gears, unlike the HD. The torque of the BMW will see it clear the line before the Tiger does, but the Triumph's power will catch up at some point depending on how far away the finish line is. The long and short is, it doesn't matter which large ADV bike you're on, because I've already left you behind on my Ducati Multistrada V4S! 😆

Great rundown. I dint think Harley expects Americans generally to pay dearly for the Pan..too steeped in the cruisers. Surprised that it calls to me a little, but nothing like the AT in black does, and thanks to you, I can tell my wife I'm thinking about the lower price tag!! people buy the fat ones out of brand loyalty, I get BMW's when I am back in UK purely because the bike mechanic at the local dealer is a genius. Out here in my part of Asia everyone prefers small engine two stroke for off road work, stuff you can pick up even if you broke your ankle.

The GS I know for a fact won't get 50mpg. Loaded it gets 34mpg. 60k of miles and 2 cross country trips can confirm that finding.

Thank you for this well-presented comparison. I'm two months away from buying a new adventure touring bike for a planned trip around North America, a "pan-American", which is somewhat ironic in that I would NOT consider the Harley, even at half the price. My short list is currently the Tiger, the AfroTwin and the Beemer. (nice work KZread algorithm for bringing me here!). Leaning towards the Triumph. The GS really is owning the segment, but I find the front wheel feels sort of floaty on the road... disconnected. I'm looking forward to a Tiger test ride. My friends are all yelling "Africa Twin!" for some reason.

MCN did a long term review of the Harley. The guy liked the bike very much, but was really let down by the reliability. Not something you want if you’re interested in long range touring and long intervals between mechanical assistance. Not so much of an issue in the UK, Europe, or the US, but in Australia with its smaller population centres and long distances between, reliability is a key factor IMO.

You didn't do a "best looking" column! This is essential for a lot of us 'bike tarts'. Having said that I can tell you that the Harley would win by a country mile. It is one of the ugliest bikes ever made.I'd have to have my eyes burned out before ever sticking a leg over one. The others all follow a tried and tested format, now accepted my most. Nice vid :-)

This video proves spec sheet comparisons are garbage. Seat height is misleading when you can’t take seat width into account. The Pan Am has a very wide seat which will make it feel taller then it is. The Africa Twin has a very narrow seat in comparison. I know. I owned a Pan Am Special and I own the same Africa you used to compare. Stated fuel mileage is a joke. Sure, put the bike in rain mode and limp it down a backroad until it runs out of fuel. Yup, that’s stated mileage. Put it in full power mode and ring its neck. That’s actual mileage. Stated power and torque are always garbage once put on a dyno. Every company over states their numbers. That Pan Am that claims 150hp is actually more like 130hp. A virtual drag race based off power to weight ratio? You’ve absolutely never drag raced before. Traction control and how well it works, how the suspension gets the power to the ground, type of transmission, how does the clutch hook up. Aerodynamics and drag. These are a few of the things that would affect a drag race. It isn’t simply power vs weight. Owning a DTC, it would beat all these off the line and be right there with them at the end. People should go find videos where these bikes are compared side by side by actual riders in Person. Better yet, people should really go out and at minimum sit on the bikes they want to compare. If possible, ride them yourselves. I get you’re trying to make content to help people out but it’s misleading and just not good content.
