That truck is beautiful on the outside but Western Star needs to listen to drivers inputs about the ups and downs. Not liking something in a car you might drive for 50,000 miles is way different than a truck you will drive for 2 million miles. Power outlets, USB connections, better mirrors. Don't even get me started on plastic parts in the drivetrain that will deteriorate and leave you stranded.

Hi Kenny i was surprised when Rusty identified the plastic retaining clip in a still shot during this video, i was like come on W.S use a metal one. But your right too much plastic crap on trucks. Id love to see Rusty maybe one day come do a stint in Western Australia driving B doubbles and tripple road trains. Where the trucks although are American KW and W.S they are built for Australian outback they are heavier and have much bigger cooling systems then whats on a lot of the American build KWs and WS or Freighliners and Euro Volvos etc twin air snorkel cleaners and front protection is vital.

It's an American Mercedes.. Even the European Mercedes trucks are garbage.

There’s three screws under your mirrors, tighten them up to stop mirrors from moving.

Definitely, it happens ALL THE TIME. At my company when a new truck comes in. Before it goes on the road a mechanic and 3 veteran drivers inspect it throughout first because of past experience.

Rusty, you are the most entertaining, informative and POSITIVE trucker I've watched on the entire internet. You may "complain" about minor stuff (who doesn't), but overall you always seem to make the best of every negative situation, and it's obvious that you enjoy your career. I also know how much work it is to make these videos (I am a full-time videographer/photographer), so your time in making them is appreciated. Thanks again, and keep pumping these videos out!

Western Stars were built in my home town of Kelowna, BC. A quality, custom built Canadian Truck. At first it was a partnership with White and were called "White Western Stars. I drove one in the late 60's with a Detroit Diesel "Screamin Jimmy". They were bought by Daimler in 2000, who's only goal was cost cutting. They closed the plant in Canada and moved production, first to the Freightliner plant in Portland, then on to Mexico. They are but a mere shadow of what they once were.

Fellow truckers here man driving a western star as well 2019. I just wanted to say I love your videos. Also your content made me stop and remember to appreciate life and how every day can bring something new. I’ve been in a rut lately and I feel like I’m breathing fresh air. Thanks for the really cool content!

Coolant reservoir emptied out and the level sensor told the computer to shut down. Sorry, commenting as I'm watching. You're correct.

The gift that keeps on giving. The new trucks are good for the environment because they spent so much time not running in the shop.

I drive a Mercedes Actros in the UK 🇬🇧 and I can already recognise another of the interior parts are from Mercedes. Such as the steering wheel, the stalks and the electric window buttons.

When I used to work at Arlington Wrecker, I used to love these calls. The company would say check it out see if you can fix it if not then tow it.$600 to ride out there,$400 an hour for my labor$$$. 10 minute fix=1 hour labor 🤔. You get the picture.

@@kenho6378 I'm just glad truckers use it. So much traffic on the I10 and the trucks really clogged things up. Nothing against them, not their fault. I'm sure they don't like sitting in local rush hour traffic either.

@@mig9byninteen606 they are so old that they cannot walk properly anymore. So as the usefulness and beauty they are garbage as well. In American culture old trucks, steam punkish things, mussle cars etc look nice but in reality they are garbage as well. Only the culture makes you think like that.

I first took a liking to the Western Stars when one was featured as Optimus Prime. Then on Highway Thru Hell, Jaime Davis bought a new WS heavy wrecker. They are good looking trucks!

"Back in the day", Western Star was a quality truck, before they were bought by Daimler. I'd be upset if I bought one and it sprung a coolant leak with a 1000 miles on it, but I guess with all the quick connect fasteners these days that's to be expected. They don't build them like they use to, just crank 'em out....at least you don't own it : )

It's not so much a question of them being owned by Daimler, it's a matter of every single builder cutting every corner possible to try and maximize profits and to hell with quality. Daimler has owned WS & F-liner for quite a while now and in the early days, there wasn't that much difference from when they were domestic owned. But NOTHING is built well today; not even the Petes. They're still the best of the bunch but even they ain't what they used to be; nothing is.

Daimler has gone backwards a bit and certainly during the first 2 model years of a new truck or an updated one. Once bought a MP2 Actros 2651 with a V8 and automatic transmission and within the first year the transmission had to be replaced, not long after it was a computer... It was our last Mercedes I bought and changed over our van and truck fleet over to Iveco. Despite the cheap name we had very few problems with any of our Iveco’s and if there was a problem it was a small electronic issue that could be fixed in a few minutes rather than days for the Mercedes. But from the inside the Mercedes is much nicer

I recommend that you go and pick your own new truck with what you need and the company pays for it instead of giving you trouble some trucks.

That's what I was thinking. I keep one until it's worn out. Last one had 1.8m when they forced me out of it. They've tried 3 times to already give me another new one and and I'm adamantly against it. This one only has 700k. Takes too long to move everything and switch into new living quarters.

I watched til the end. Can't wait to find out what put the Big Star on the hook. I have a question for you though...Why do you ALWAYS show and talk about how fast you CAN run? Sure, that one CAN run 77 (or what ever you said) when it's up on the limiter. My tractor is only limited by r.p.m. and it's geared to run triple digits. I have topped it out at around 107, late at night on I-10, for a few miles but, I can't and don't run it like that constantly. It's also not possible for you to run topped out all the time either. The point here is that you SHOULDN'T run against the limiter at all. You never know when you'll need that little bit more to get out of a bad situation. Stay safe out there bud! Oh yeah...there should be some screws on the bottom of those fender mirrors to tighten them up and keep them where you want them. There's absolutely NOTHING more irritating than mirrors that won't stay put!!

ONE power outlet is a problem for any commercial vehicle. 🤷‍♂️

@@FaresDjebbar I dont want to be rude or anything, but european tractors are pretty well built. Most of the american ones i encountered are plastic held together by duct tape and dreams. They're cool and the large cabs are incredibly comfy, but the premium european brands are miles ahead of the game from most points of view.

If MAN owns WS, why does everything in star all M-B or Frieghtliner. Man did have some ownership of WS about 40 years ago. I doubt MAN took over M-B. I heard MAN had something to do with IH or Navistar.

Western Star was purchased by Daimler AG , becoming part of the Freightliner Trucks division. ERF was a subsidiaries from Western Star and was sold to MAN and MAN is a subsidiaries from Volkswagen AG.

Hey Rusty im Rob from Western Australia im glad to see you have your promised new rig by surprise . The Cascadia i found was too much technical sensory crap..rubbish. I love the gauges for the simple reason they tell you your temps on the diffs the gearbox obviously the cooling system and yes the sensor is a life saver lol. Heres one the thing i would consider, our KWs and W.S have twin air snorkels because of dust. In the outback. Watching some of your other videos the air quality can be over in the states can be about the same as its hot dry and dusty. The air snorks have pre filter to catch the dust before the factory filter meaning the engine can breath better especially when your going interstate. The front left blind spot mirror on the front left is driving me mad too id put a self tapping screw in thru the base to keep it still. Also are you allowed to install front bar protection? It's the thought that counts man, my boss literally takes $20 from his employees(employee offered to pay for lunch) so the 12man crew get had somthing to eat. He takes this $20bill, and get 12 $1 burgers and keeps the change. Then he takes his month long vacation during the busiest part of the year.....fuk i hate my job.

Least ways it wasn't a Mack truck. Back in the day round about ten years ago or so, the company I was working for go a brand new Mack truck, one of the first one hundred fresh off the assembly line and it was only used as a show-room model before we got it. What a bum buy that was. The stupid thing spent twice as much time in the shop for repairs as it did actually working on the road. 😩

19:10 Rusty use caution when using these double or even 3 way outlets as you know everything is made in freakin china land and here in Australia i have had a few mates who lost their offroad vehicles because of them failing (burning out). great upload buddy , yes i like it nice truck unit , When i drove trucks didn't know much mechanics just really top up fluids check things , But its great the way you can fix things top guy , think every truck driver should have experience like that , maybe trucking companies could send drivers on a maintenance mechanic course part of hiring and training before go out with your own unit , takecare see you next one bud 👍
