Maybe it could be the pirates who kidnapped Troy and LeVar Burton actually were paid by them to kidnap Troy for ruining the Elitism by making it a normal school.

Since Community took such a long break in filming, they had to bring John Goodman in while he was in the middle of filming the movie 'Flight' where his character has facial hair and a long braid. Obviously, the braid was a wig but since he couldn't shave his goatee for 'Community', they decided to keep the look and added the "I'm going through some stuff" gag to explain his weird look.

Te rest of the show takes place in his mind as he decends into madness being trapped in the room temperature room. Not able to escape back to his friends, not able to feel the chill of snow or the warmth of a nice summer's day. He slowly starves to death, even fading away from his own visions of the future.
