This has added humour if you’ve ever seen even 5 minutes of the tv show GLEE. It was a very deliberate parody - from the “we sing what we mean instead of making a face!” to the random piano guy. In fact, the whole Study Group Hates Glee Club became an ongoing joke because the cast of Community had a one-sided rivalry against the cast of Glee. Community and Glee were filmed on opposite lots, and the Community cast were humorously bitter about Glee’s rating success versus Community’s lack thereof. Thus the “Glee Club Sucks!” jokes began ... with Greendale’s Glee Club all getting killed. Cast members of Glee (Kevin McHale and Amber Riley) even watched this episode and tweeted about how hilarious(ly accurate) it was.

all the references (off the top of my head): - Mr Radison aka Mr Rad = Mr Schuester aka Mr Schue (always with the damn sweater vest dhdjfn) - Random piano man aka Brad The Piano Guy - The room was redone to be laid out the same way as the music room in GLEE - The acapella sound bite transitions - tropes like the music continuing even though they’re no longer playing instruments, bursting into song out of nowhere, people who claim Glee Club sucks eventually joining, the spinning cameras - REGIONALS - “mashups”

Well, to be fair she's supposed be 20 in this instead of 18 when that joke was made. Still not legal drinking age though, and that realization just made me feel really old.

Just to add a little extra context to this-- as everyone else has already mentioned, this episode was Dan Harmon's way of poking fun at Glee. At the time this episode was done, Glee's co-creator Ryan Murphy had established a reputation for badgering musicians to get them to allow their music to be used for his show, and sharply excoriating any artist who declined. That Kings of Leon line that Mr. Rad uses to distract everyone and escape at the end of the episode-- that was a not-so-subtle reference to the feud that had ignited between Murphy and the Kings of Leon when the band refused to allow their music to be used for Glee. Murphy said some pretty terrible things about the band, including accusing them of homophobia. So this episode was basically Dan Harmon taking issue with what he saw as bullying and abusive behavior behind the scenes at Glee.

Annie was spoofing "Betty Boop" with her song. And was pretty spot on to that classic animated character I thought.

@@eolsunder Nah Marketa is right. It's creepy how sexuality is infantilized. It plays off tropes of helplessness and immaturity being sexy, basically saying childishness is sexy. That's just a weird and unsettling gender dynamic. Though in this case it's alright because it was deliberately played up as a parody of that kind of thing; it was supposed to be taken as weird.

On my first watch I was so focused on the episode making fun of Glee that I only caught the Invasion of the Body Snatchers reference when they recreated that final scene with Britta and Jeff. This show is a film nerds wet dream.

I'm sure this was a tough episode to edit down to 10 minutes of shown content, but I wish my favourite joke had made it in. When Professor Rad stands up to sing with Abed and Abed asks "why is your piano still playing"

"It was almost like being on ecstasy, only that instead of having pointless conversations and dancing like idiots...wait, it was exactly like being on ecstasy!" LOL!!!

The inspector SpaceTime holiday special joke is both making fun of the terrible Star Wars holiday special, which George Lucas and all of the actors involved have disavowed, and the fact that doctor who always does Christmas specials

There is a super FAMOUS Christmas Special from Classic Who from 1965 called *"The Feast of Steven"* famous for being a Dalek sci fi telling of the feast from the noncanon book of steven in the bible. Its famous being that it was one of the rarest episodes out there since the BBC lost the film roll. and only British colonies of Africa who had a radio tower for being a medium broadcaster in that country were able to record the film. Thats why there was a treasure trove of classic who found in Africa recently.

The Normies have really been backsliding in catching on to pop culture references and recurring gags. With all the talk of glee, how did they miss the blatant parody of Glee? How many times are they gonna forget that Inspector Spacetime is a parody of Doctor Who? How are they surprised that Troy can rap? He's played by Childish Gambino!!!

Their knowledge of pop culture is extremely selective, and I suspect mostly focused on recent things. It's great that they're watching the show and they like it so much, which is a testament to Dan Harmon and the writers that the show is so enjoyable even when one doesn't understand all the layers, but it's also a little sad seeing how many things they don't get. It might as well become a drinking game.

Community makes fun of Glee alot mainly because they both aired at the same time slot and Glee had more viewers. Lol.

Abed's copy of Batman Returns had a personalized message and autograph from Christian Bale. That's why it was $300. Not sure how you missed that.

I love the attention to detail, especially when Annie shows up behind the blankets during the rap song and then back to the real world at 7m 44 sec.

When Community was on the air, it was during the same time slot as Glee. That's why Community would regularly poke fun at Glee.

It's so satisfying to me that even though Glee was a huge thing when it was on the air, Community is the one that endures. Also, the regionals joke gets me every time because the first season of Glee did the exact same thing and it bugged me.

The "Bubie" joke when Troy said "What about the other one" is because Troy thought she said "Boobie" hence his reaction when she said the other one is dead

The cadence you were talking about i believe is the Trans-Atlantic accent which is a made up accent that was supposed to combine some british and america english sensibilities into one "proper" american accent that they would use in all movies and radio back in the day

You can say "You're welcome" as amny times as you want, Pierce, but you'll never beat Dwayne Johnson.

It's crazy how you guys are film majors and you NEVER get the references 🤣🤣 so many episode themes go totally over your heads lol

I love that they added a Donald rap in this episode. I'm not even a hip hop guy but I love me some Donald. He's so good

they are making fun of glee who they actually filmed next door to during their time on the paramount lot.

Rewatching these community reactions and realizing just how much Suraj thirsted over Annie is hilarious. I loovvveee it. Especially because I thirst over him and then watch him thirst over her. It’s very meta lol.

the inspector space time christmas special that abed watched at then end and doesn't like is meant to be a reference to the star wars holiday special

This reminds me of a musical called the guy who didn't like musicals which is about an apocalypse of singing zombies

This goes for everyone, but specially for Marketa: Try watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's a fun musical that anyone can enjoy, good music, not a lot of singing partas but still a musical. A bizarre one, and amazing.

It's hilarious how Suraj Gets Whenever Anything Gets Sexual 😂

Suraj was waaaaaaaayyyy too much into Alison Brie's 'Betty Boop'-act. 😅

The terrible Christmas special is a reference to the Star Wars Christmas special.

Watch Happy Endings too, or after season 5 if you guys haven't seen it
