Communicating With Potential Licensees: Dos and Don'ts

If you want to become a successful entrepreneur and license your ideas for products, you need to make yourself accessible. Others, including potential licensees and the media, need to be able to get in touch with you easily! Are you being perceived the way you want to be? Do yourself a favor. inventRight cofounders Stephen Key and Andrew Krauss riff on common mistakes they witness inventors make over email and on the phone.
inventRight is a one-on-one coaching program that helps people license their ideas. Visit www.inventright.com for more information and to become their student.
Call #1-800-701-7993 to set up an appointment with Andrew or another member of the inventRight team to discuss how they can help you license your ideas.

Hey, thanks for the tips. I know the ear piece is a bother, but Yay! The sound on Andrews side was clear. I don't know why you have to use the ear piece because your sound was always clear . Thanks, Keep it coming!

If I send you a sell sheet, will you potentially share it on your video? I’m concerned about proprietary information getting out before I contact a licensee.

  • @inventRight

Hello Deborah! There are ways to approximate what a product will sell for. The Entrepreneur staff has put together a great article about what a company does to estimate the retail price: www.entrepreneur.com/encyclopedia/pricing-a-product. You can find out what you need to know by doing the research. Check out our article on how to become an expert: www.entrepreneur.com/article/229583. You can also consult with someone who is already an expert. You might get some insight from our article about how to approach them: www.entrepreneur.com/article/250296. Ultimately, you'll need to know as much as you can about the industry that you are inventing for, in order to determine what your idea is worth. Check out our Inc. article on the subject: www.inc.com/stephen-key/what-s-your-invention-worth.html. Thank you for watching!

Hi, Good Day!! This is Mohamed Ashiq from India. First of all thanks for explaining lot about licensing. I learnt a lot from InventRight. Your website really rocks!! I have a simple question - If i have Provisional Patent application in India, can i submit my idea to US companies as I can apply PCT international application with priority date of PPA in India? or should I have PPA applied in US? Am i right that PCT application can take Indian PPA as priority date? Kindly request your suggestion on this. Awaiting for your response. Love you guys!!

+Mohamed Asif I am not a patent attorney. I am not giving legal advice. I believe you are correct. Since you have filed your provisional patent application in India you can submit to the US, within one year file your PCT in the US. To be safe you should contact a patent attorney. Great question! Thanks for watching!

Agree and disagree slightly - texting is one of the best ways to guarantee a message gets read, and we wouldn't be surprised if it becomes more and more useful to business moving forward. It's also very easily read and disregarded, for sure. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

Not everyone can drop what they're doing and reach for the phone. Hardly ever am I able to pick up when someone calls during working hours. Most employers disallow phones on the shop floor. Schools do not allow calls or texts during class. You are a dinosaur if you rely solely on voice protocol.
