As a semi new transplant from the US (been in sweden almost a year now) I received my first note a few weeks ago. My husband had to translate it to me. 🤣🤣 I was totally my fault and well deserved, even though it was an accident . (I mistakenly took a wash day on someone else's time, I had miscounted the days on the schedual board 😭😭) I left an apology note back. Is that a normal/ok thing to do here? Or will it be seen as a sarcastic move? My apology was compleatly sincere. I felt like an idiot. Lol

Oh yes, I live on the ground floor of an apartment building in Istanbul and have sole access to the back garden. Wow this is so interesting and weird. I am Norwegian but despite our similarities this Swedish practice was entirely unknown to me. It actually explains something I could not figure out while living abroad. I knew this girl from Asia who had lived in Sweden. She used to get all the other people sharing apartment with her upset because she left these kinds of angry-notes. We thought it was something they did in the Asian country she was from. But now I am 100% convinced this is a habit she picked up in Sweden. She would always talk about how Sweden was better than everywhere else and could not wait to get back there.

The thing is, when you see an angry note, EVERYONE reads it, and you feel slightly uncomfortable, even if you didn't do anything wrong. You don't like the atmosphere in the house changing and you usually take the author's side, just because you get annoyed at the one disturbing the peace. If the note is ridiculous though, you get annoyed at the author for disturbing the peace. 😂 Regardless, a note is never ignored.

Nice explanation. But i guess you can understand that some people with different cultural patterns find these a bit irritating because some people could percieve it sneaky and dishonest. Face to face problem solving doesn't necesseraly mean aggression or conflict but a more honest and human way to make peace without any misunderstandings. However I understand the swedish backround of these stuff, I just wanted to share the cons of it. But i really think scandis are really aware of this, that's why hundreds of scandinavian movies are about these misunderstandings because of the "noncommunication". I appreciate the self reflection very much.

They don’t have the ability to use a direct communication=effective communication and that is most likely due to poorly developed social skills.Passive-aggression is widely used here in Sweden and it became a real problem in workplaces.People are currently being encouraged to report it as it causes confusion, anxiety and and affects mental health. As a therapist I can also say that Passive -aggression has nothing to do with culture. It’s a form of a psychological harassment.

Where I come from (Ireland) If someone is annoying you by, e.g. continuously blaring music, you would walk out your door and shout in the direction the noise was coming from "DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND TURN THAT SHITE DOWN, WILL YOU?". We are a bit more direct, but note that this is a request and not an order. Failure to comply may result in a warning to the effect of "IF YOU DON'T TURN THAT EFFIN NOISE DOWN NOW, I'LL COME OVER THERE AND STICK THAT STEREO UP YOUR ARSE SIDEWAYS". :)

I wonder what happens in Sweden if you confront the person who wrote the note? In Finland I once got a this kind of note slipped through my mailbox when I lived in an apartment building and the old(ish) lady was shocked and scared when I marched to her door and asked nicely what the hell was this note all about. In the end it was a misunderstanding but damn I was pissed for her not having the nerve to speak straight to my face :)

Haha, oh she was caught in the act but good that it happened so you could talk about it and come to the conclusion that it was just a misunderstanding. That is the benefit of skipping the angry notes and have a face to face confrontation instead. I think the Swede would feel very embaressed if they get confronted (I would at least) but it depends on the person.

Poor old lady it seems to me that this lady just wanted to hide the smell of a too "adult" person. I wish I could write a note so that my neighbors don't listen to reggaeton at full volume all day long, but I would surely have more luck looking for the Delorean so I go back to the 90s where everything was rock, pop or techno
