Common remembers J Dilla, calls him greatest producer ever
Common shares his memories of James Dewitt Yancey aka J Dilla aka Jay Dee. Common tells Nick Huff of Hard Knock TV that J Dilla is his, Pharrells, Kanyes and Questloves favorite producer. Common also talks about how Dilla and himself worked on Like Water For Chocolate almost 10 years ago and how he thinks Music would be different if Jay Dee was still alive.
"I never seen a producer sit there and have so much revere for music and so much respect for it. I've seen everybody from Pharrell to Kanye, to Questlove ... and I'm like, 'Man, that's my favorite producer.' I think music would be in a different place if he was here. He provided so much inspiration."
"He made sounds that would be anything from the rawest of hip-hop to something like sounds Pink Floyd mixed with some Radiohead, and he would play some of the instruments."
R.I.P James Dewitt Yancey aka J Dilla aka Jay Dee (February 7, 1974 February 10, 2006)

Same here and I'm honest about it. I loved his music without knowing it was him behind the boards
RIP J. Dilla. I can't believe how he and Common cooked up "The Light," classic love record.
R.I.P. J Dilla and Nujabes Gone but never forgotten
Nujabes and J Dilla 2 of my fav producers. R.I.P.
One of the GREATEST hip Hop producers!!
I respect ALL of these lists of great Hip-Hop producers and agree mostly, but there's one dude who I believe is SUPER underrated and deserves to be on the list and that's Nottz! Check out his catalog of work and you may be surprised... Peace.
I just happened to hit HKTV and did not realize this beat was done by a guy named J Dilla. I first heard this on a mix tape from a Honda dealer of all things. And i thought wow, "how does he do dat??!!!". RIP. Another great - down,,,damn....
thanks 4 all Dilla!...rest in beats! from Chile! Peace!
r.i.p dilla common is awsome rapper, lyricsiti, and person
brought a tear to my eye
I've been a Dilla fan since the Pharcyde runnin....I was so young like 9 years old and it was just beautiful I miss Dilla more that MJ he was so active and hip-hop is not the same without Dilla it's like Hip-Hop died for me when he letf...
I think Nottz is easily top 10 all time. Easily. His catalogue is nothing but nasty banger after banger non-stop
RIP J Dilla, at least we got Pete and 9th Wonder, for that soulful style.
The ROOTS!!! Hell yeah!! and Jdilla Is a LENGENDARY PRODUCER!
J Dilla and Nujabes R.I.P. I miss both of you.

Happy Birthday Jay Dee~~~ He Would Of Been 37 Today!!!! :( God Bless His Soul!!!! Forever Jay
Like Water For Chocolate was Common's best Album produced by J-Dilla of course
there isn't a debate. technically the only producer fucking with Dilla is Madlib. but it was lovely hearing the humanity in the rhymes for The Light...lol he didn't finish the rhyme
The best producer of all time...
@sgberols The song is "The Light" by Common produced by J Dilla. It is on Common's album Like Water for Chocolate, released in 2000.
@nikemeo yo theres so many beats I still have not heard by dilla, this guy was not only good but worked all day. He was an incredible man, period. R.I.P Dilla
Commons right j dilia had a gift..and you dont get that soulful feel in music anymore now...its sad...im very dissapointed in the music today R.I.P J Dilla
come on man that a classic.
COMMON N J DILLA IS LOVE
R.I.P. Dilla.
Dilla Alllll The Wayyyy Rip x
dilla will always be the best he is ya producer favorite producer u better ask sum body
@hafaskater i can second that... the first tune i realised late that he was the man behind the music was "got til its gone" - i rinsed that so much when I was younger, and when i found out it was dilla it gave it a whole different meaning and gave me the chills all over again. and then slowly through more research did i realise all the beats i kept playing over and over were always dilla tunes... there's no other way to say it without being cliche, but quite simply the best who ever did it
1. J Dilla 2. Madlib 3. Pete Rock 4. DJ Premier 5. Kanye West 6. Rza 7. Havoc 8. Nujabes 9. Q Tip 10. 9th Wonder
Still Shining - Busta Rhymes
ty nemesis
@HARRYMARIA I feel u and i get what ur saying i never knew who dilla was actually until my music teacher told me about him a few years back but i realized i grew up to his music just never knew it was dilla until now and i gotta say J Dilla changed me life indeed and i dont call it dickridin i call it appreciation one love. :)
the ones left that are still around strong are Madlib, dj premier, pete rock, MF Doom, Daedleus, hi-tek, damu the fugmonk, kan kick, oh no, and 9th wonder. my personal favorite rapper is Wildchild from the lootpack! J Dilla and nujabes were both white coats (white coats meaning they mastered the art of something. in this case, they mastered music producing)
i feel ridiculous for not having him up there!
Dilla, Premo, Dr. Dre, and Madlib. Top 4.
Common - So Far to Go
@hafaskater Honestly I dont think a lot of people did. He purposedly let his music speak for itself rather than have his name plastered everywhere. I feel like people dont fully understand how genius he was until they spend the time to get deep into his technique. His beats were nice at first, but then you get into his music deeper, especilally from a producer standpoint, then you're like, "Whoa. Genius at work." RIP Dilla
RIP Dilla
dilla, premo, pete rock, flylo, madlib, rza, dre, samiyam, exile, clams.
@Spaz12isHipAimedFagg what do you mean actually? Jaylib is Madlib and Dilla, so he definitely took part in the beat either way
i've thought about that too, where hip hop would be now if he'd lived. i think he really was onto something huge. imagine God giving him 10 more years or something. shit... easily best producer, i'd even say one of the greatiest musicians
3 months late but its "The Red" Jaylib ;)
@pureaggression its called "the red" by jaylib i think
R.I.P. To The God Father!
madlib man :)
peace to the god Dilla
JDilla,Premo,Pete Rock,Madlib,9th Wonder,Kev Brown...

Does anyone know the name of the track that's playing, when the magazine with quest love on the cover comes???
@razilleD @razilleD J Dilla - So far to go (Ft. Common & D'Angelo)
@boozaaa By no means am I saying the two cats you speak of are legendary greatness but I dont know if anybody is in that class with Dilla to date.
Red from Champion Sound.
beat at 4:41 Slum Village - Fall In Love
4-way tie for 1st. J Dilla Madlib Premo Pete Rock
It's Dillabruary !
common should have madlib produce his next album
who the fuck would dislike this video..?
@MidlandKruiskade u missed alchemist and Eric B
"I heard that beat, and I thought about a girl I really cared about... at the time... I wasn't even with her". Hell yeah, Common. xD
@wordailay "The Red" by Jaylib (J Dilla and Madlib)
My favorite Producers would have to be No order: Dr Dre Kanye West RZA J Dilla The Alchemist DJ Green Latern Just Blaze DJ Premier Pete Rock Q-Tip
what's the name of the song/artist for the beat @0:11?
whats that beat called again at the start
@j2011carter your right.. i fuckin LOVE madlib and DOOM man theres so much good hip hop its hard to put em in order you know?
@ThaHoodNerd No Pete Rock or Madlib?
What's the name of the song in the beginning?

The Red - Jaylib
Dills Tha Great
what's the song at the beginning before the interview?
The first beat is actually a Jaylib beat i think
@theabovesociety you put 9th over premo? interesting...you like pete rock at all?
I love MF Doom ever since KMD and their affiliation with 3rd Base back in the late 80's early 90's. A top tier producer, for sure. But Doom will always be known more for his his heavyweight rhyme writing. Madvillainy is his biggest album, mainly because of Madlib's production. 100% beats, 100% rhymes. though I will admit "One Beer" is a better beat than "No Games"
you blew up along with Kanye ironically after his death I call that the solar treatment
