    Its called theory, learn musical theory and you should be able to pick up most instruments easy._. But i suggest not, its like trying to learn another language, or math, if you hate either just stick to jammin._. But it helps if you want to go professional._.

    @@adelineinactivity If you strip the recording down and play it with a metronome it divides into a shorter bar, either perceived as 21/32 or 23/32. It doesn't split neatly into a 3/4 bar, but of course Metallica never meant it to be as specific as 32nd notes, they just felt it out.

    The "no regard for key" is actually quite interesting. Provided that it's used tastefully and within right musical context, it could be really nice as atonal or polytonal music.

    Agreed. and the same with single string solos. There is something to be said about simplicity, especially if it is in an uber technical wrapper. Little things can help separate and help highlight other more interesting parts of the song. The constant and incessant finger tapping in the song king dingaling from av7x is a good example, ruined what could have been a solid rock song.

    I've noticed Kirk Hammett doing that sometimes, and it kinda "works". EXAMPLE: Second solo prior to the last verse of "the shortest straw" from ...and justice for all (the little part before the epic "volume swell", LOL). The riff is in E minor and the solo is in G pentatonic minor.

    PhottMusic Actually... most of the guitar players in KZread don't use vibrato: they only use sweep picking and all is velocity... and use 008 string gauge with 0.8mm action, like hello kitty.

    Tuning by ear in home is a good way to train the ear, but IN HOME, not a rehearsal, not a concert, just in home, hearing the reference pitch. Thanks.

    I tune by ear all the time when I'm noodling at home. helped me learned to hear notes and play them. Which is nice, as I never learned to read music! lol

    I've tuned by ear so much that I can get dead on the correct pitch a little over half the time, other times being only a cent or two off. I still use a tuner to clean it up unless it's just a quick jam session.

    Prob. the greatest 1-string solo is Reeves Gabrels on Bowie's "Looking For Satellites". Bowie basically told him "do 8 bars on the low E string, then 8 on the next string" and so on, and RG got so annoyed that he took it out on the guitar ...

    2:17 I think this sounds pretty awesome, especially just in a riff. And no, I didn't just discover what a pinch harmonic is. Some passages such as the instrumental/solo passages of Medicine Man by Pantera have a bunch of nice ass harmonics and Dimebag's playing is beautiful.

    The verse riff has 9 open e notes before the first power cord. This makes it impossible to do because unless you down pick it all it ends on a down stroke. So you ether miss that last open e and have to correct it with a pause or you get off time.
