Common BJJ White Belt Mistake when Rolling with Coaches

Спорт

In today's video I answer a question from Asa (a BJJ White Belt) who's struggling to roll with his Black Belt coach.
In the video I'll explain the mistake he's making when he's rolling with his coach. It's a mistake I believe we've all made at some point or another. And this mistake is trying to impress our coaches by rolling really well or trying to impress them. I'll explain why this is a mistake in the video.
And if you're a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I hope this video makes sense and helps you with your training if you ever roll with your coach.

I love rolling with my coach! He pushes me really hard every time, but he still lets me try techniques, escapes and attacks👍💪 after that he stops playing around and submits me when he feels like it 😂

As someone with lots of experience wrestling prior to training jiu jitsu, rolling with a coach helped me immensely. It was my "oh there are levels to this shit" moment the first time i rolled with a coach. Other white belts and blue belts i could usually just wrestle into side control and go for a simple americana, it wasnt until my wrestling got STUFFED by the instructors and the color belts that i realized how deep the ocean of jiu jitsu really is.

I remember being unsure/anxious going into a roll with my black belt coach early on (like a month in) and then just slowing down a bit, and repeating to myself in my head a few times, "he's just a man". He's not super human and he (and other people) use the same physics as me. It helped instantly. I started being more methodical and doing my best to be aware of his application of force. If I can replicate his actions I'll get the same results, so I just need to pay attention and keep rolling.

I'm a white belt and I just practice what I feel I can do. Among the higher belts, I see them letting me go for a certain move as I start going into one. I don't think I'm winning but I think they allow me to try the move I'm doing to see if I can do it. In sparring or grappling winning and losing doesn't mean anything to me as I learn what they do to me and I do to them. At this stage, I have to say everything is an experiment whether it's pretty or not. I get corrected enough which is a good thing. It's just practice, not fighting.

Judoka here so a little different. I have been at it for 7 months. Definitely terrified of randori/rolling with the blacks. But I'm also abit low on confidence due to some health problems and other experiences. Still I have to test myself and remind myself.... They are just normal guys who know more than me. They aren't ninja master gods per say. And I tell myself Shodan is just a learner rank in judo relative to BJJ where a black belt is a mastery rank.

I remember when I rolled with my brown belt coach for the first time as a white belt and my mindset was "accept defeat" which he went on to beat me easily and swiftly. Quite the humbling experience because I had about an extra one hundred pounds on him and he still beat me effortlessly, it was like an older brother toying with his younger sibling

Good video , this happens with white belts rolling with higher belts all the time. They’ll freeze because they only want to make “correct” moves and end up really stiff and slow. Helping them have fun while trying to pass your guard can allow them to loosen up and attack things, even if them getting caught is inevitable

  • @Yutter89
    @Yutter892 жыл бұрын

Our gym is very growth oriented. Out blackbelts so far give you resist but guide you into a technique opportunity. Theyll let you complete a move or then immediately escape out and force you to think and start once more. Guided rolling is the best way I can think of it, I know they could tap me without blinking, but that doesn't really help anyone I think

Where I train, the group is always pretty small, so I get to roll with my coach pretty often, basically at least once per training session. Those rolls are always the most enjoyable and with the least injuries since he makes it just hard enough for me so it’s a constant exchange between control and struggle, very satisfying

Lol third degree white belt! I really appreciate it when higher belts are able to skill down to stay just ahead of me and loosen up their BJJ to play with me. I noticed the better they are, the more they are able to scale. It's pretty crazy how wide the skill gap can be.

First time I rolled at the gym I train at, the head coach rolled with me after the drills. He went in total slow motion with me and at one point it seemed like he was giving me an arm to see if I knew what to do so I went for the arm bar (with zero tug, just getting the position). For the next two weeks I worried whether I did the right thing or if what I did was disrespectful. I’m a little over-anxious at the best of times, but you’re certainly not alone with questioning yourself.

Don't worry about exposing your weaknesses and showing your strengths to your coach. He's probably spotted both before you did. If you want to make him happy, go for the last move he taught you, even if you're not good at it yet, and try and follow the advice that he gave you specifically. He's not trying to beat you He's trying to teach you, show him you're really Listening and he'll be more motivated to help you improve

Absolutely agree with this, I rolled with my professor once in the couple months I've been training and he literally just let me attempt arm bars over and over for the entire round, days later I ask him what was I doing wrong? Because of course I couldn't submit him. His answer? Nothing at all I just defended them right. Also during the roll he noticed my instinct to recover my guard whenever my armbars didn't work but when I hesitated he spoke up immediately DO NOT HESITATE! RECOVER YOUR GAURD!!! all of that to say as a brand new spazz if your coach wants you to know something he's going to tell you

I'm also a few stripe blue. Last roll with my black belt coach my mental health was bad (I have anxiety attacks) and I was thinking way to much worrying about everything. I could tell he could sense the anxiety because he suddenly took it easy and let me submit him twice. He then told me to get out of my head and rolling should just be fun. It was fantastic advice and it rings so true. The rolls were I can forget my anxiety are so fun and I can roll forever. Having him both show me with his actions and having him tell me making mistakes does not matter really hit home. Unfortunately, I then got hurt a few days later and now I have to take a few weeks off..

I get that it's in many proples heads that you have to learn the hard way. But I feel like I get so much more off a fun flow roll than getting sweeped and preasure passed for 5min.

a long time ago I adopted a feral kitty, she was very small and very wild. I would let my hand limp while I was on the computer and she would "attack" it ferociously, if she would get too "bitey" I would just gently move my hand to move her away, that's how I feel when I roll with the main coaches (I would be the cat), I feel kind of stupid. I prefer to roll with one of the sub coaches, especially one of the guys who is insanely strong and doesn't give nothing, I can take not being able to submit, I'm ok with it, it's not that I think I will be able to submit a kid half my age, who has competed in the worlds, who is a head taller and 30 pounds heavier, I don't like it when they give me an arm to arm bar, if it's not there, it's not there, I'm good with it
