Commodore Plus/4, upgrade and repair guide highlights, Commodore Plus 4

Ғылым және технология

The Commodore Plus/4 is a machine that is fast vanishing from the retro scene.
It has a propensity to self destruct if its power supply is left unchecked and parts are getting harder to obtain due to it rather specific CPU and serial control firmware.
Lets take a look at a highlighted version on what can and will go wrong with a Commodore Plus/4

I had a Commodore Plus/4 in the mid to late 80's as my main computer when I was in junior high and high school. My friend who had a C64 criticized me because the thing had no SID chip and was incompatible with the C64. I got it because at the time is was cheap and it's what I could afford. Unfortunately, I never had working joysticks and the games were very few. But I did manage to write a windowed terminal program in basic and 6502 assembly on the thing using an RS-232 interface. I played Zork II on it, but never did solve that game. For the life of me, I just don't remember what happened to it, if it was thrown away, if I sold it, gave it away, it's unbelievable that I can't remember that. But after seeing all the things people are doing with it now, I'm very tempted to get it back from EBAY and actually have one again. I was even on a live stream with Bil Herd, the original designer of this computer, and he was excited that I commented I had a Plus/4 back in the day.

@@Re-Tech I got the two running. Easy fix by swapping chips. Lovely machines. Now, I've got two more with a trickier RAM fault.

The Plus 4 was released near the end of the life cycle of the C64. That's the reason why it really never caught on.

Plus it was 3 times its envisaged retail price. It was meant to cost around the $75 dollar mark, but it was sold at the same cost as the C64. The killer for the unit is it was sold as a business model and not an all rounder or a games /home computer. They are quite rare in working condition which is why they are becoming very collectable. ;) Cheers Phil

I have a dead plus/4, i tried to diagnose whats wrong, i get activicity at the address and data lines at the cpu and the ted chip, but not picture. Not even black screen, i connect with the same monitor cable used for vic20 and c64, and the cable works. But nothing, i saw some one suggested it could be logic ic's so i bought some, and i replaced the 74ls139, it was a long shoot, but it did not solve anything. I dont have any spares i can swap so its kind of hard, i guess it could still be a problem with the cpu or the ted :(

Sorry I was hoping that this guide will be: please check PSU and power computer, measure 5V VCC line on pin # or another. Use oscilloscope and check activity on TED clock (U1, PIN14), check clock out on F0 (pin12) no- pull out CPU, check again, your TED is dead, throw away computer. If ok, check CPU clock, check RAM and etc. Now I see how to remove screws and how nice other guys made replacement chips...

I got one of these a while ago, I'm going to trying making games for this. If you know how to program c64 I think you are most of the way to knowing how to program this. Even if a system has not many games its still fun to try and make graphic demos.

You have an extensive collection. Would you sell parts or all of it?

Id never Part of sell the Plus/4 mainly because I actually like them . Also the kids like playing Pets Rescue which has become a big hit with them. If I somehow receive broken parts for the Plus/4s and I manage to get them working I would possibly pass them once they are repaired. Thanks for your comments. Cheers Phil
