just listened to an interview with the programmer that ported SEGA Sonic The Hedgehog to the C64 and his use (mandatory requirement) of the REU was discussed. Use of the DMA was crucial - in addition to the additional memory. TheC64 Mini/Maxi/Vic20 have innate support of the REU so there's a definitive target platform - hope this will influence game authors for the C64 to shift to supporting the REU and unleash a new era of C64 games, as after all the REU was not well supported back in the day so is high time to capitalize on it
Imagine showing some of these demos to people in the 80's. They'd think you were a wizard or something.

Some alien wizardry. he-he
That's impressive levels of sound quality coming from that machine, it's kind of mind-bending to think that old hardware is still that capable.

Even the original hardware designers had no idea how far users could push this machine.
I'm surprised you left out BR-TV in your Reu showcase. The fully digitizes videos are amazing, esp. the six minutes long King Kong cut 🐰
I'm not much of a sound guy but that last demo was absolutely awesome! It was SO much deeper than the usual tingy, monotone'ish sound we are used to in games. I'll have to go find it for my Office 64 for demos when people come by. Another great video. I can't wait for your subscriber base to explode :)

It is crazy what the scene has managed to squeeze out of that almost 40-year-old design! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your support!
I can't wait for my 1541 UII+ to arrive.
Heh, I never knew the rotating earth demo was rendered to the RUE a frame at a time on start... Fascinating stuff!
Very excellent video!
Thanks I enjoyed that very much!

With Sonic coming to C64 soon I really do wish I had a 256KB REU. It looks absolutely stellar.

There's an easier way to get a Commodore 64 with expanded RAM. It's called the Commodore 128. :-)
@retrobitstv

The 128 is still my favorite :) It's a shame that there isn't more development for it.
@BillAnt
3 жыл бұрын
It's because developers always concentrate on the lowest common denominator which is the stock C64 in order to be playable by the largest number of users. Also the 128KB ram on the C128 was only available in C128 mode, but not in C64 mode. By the way, I never expected to be "Rick rolled" on a C64 video at 4:26 lol

but 128 doesn't has hardware sprites!

@@KymyA74 < Really?! I didn't know. So how would they move blobs of graphics around the screen on the C128 in 128 mode (via soft sprites)?
@KymyA74
3 жыл бұрын
@@BillAnt In graphic mode they usually used brushes, in text mode instead soft-sprites, redefining characters on the fly.
Great video! One comment though: given the way Antonio accomplished the 8-bit digital samples, and how quickly the 4 bit sample ability was discovered, I've wondered whether the SID *was* in fact intended to play 8-bit samples from the start, and just left undocumented. If you are familiar with the 4-bit technique, and you look into the 8-bit extension, you'll see what I mean.
@thiesenf

I think it's the same technique used on the Amiga's Paula to make it play 14 bit MP3's... simply by treating the 4 sound channels as 2 channels and manipulating the volume of one of the channels on each side... that way you can mix down 16 sound channels into 4...
Ich kapier das nicht. Ist das nur wegen dem erhöhten Speicher möglich? Was machen diese Module?
Hi I just got my ultimate ii+ today and my nuvie player won't load any nuvie files. It comes up error 'no valid nuvie data found' did you also get this error and how did you overcome it?
@retrobitstv
5 ай бұрын
The player itself isn't used to load the files - you have to load the nuvie data into the REU through the UII+ interface then run the player afterward.

Where did you buy the glass stand in the video?

It was from Amazon but I can't recommend it. Two of the legs broke off almost immediately and I had to epoxy them back on.

@@retrobitstv Thanks, good to know!
The good audio sample wouldn't necessarily get you a copyright _strike._ It might only get you a _claim,_ which wouldn't hurt your YT standing, but only take some or all of your monetization for the particular video. A strike would most likely just come if you disputed the claim and then lost that.
Higher than a CD? WOWWW! Wait, that's just sampling rate. What about bit depth? It sounds like it may be lower bit depth than the 16 for CDs, but it's still dang good! And if someone could figure this out now, then what was missing to be able to make it work in the early 80s, even though that's when CDs came out? Oh, the flash storage? What if we tried it with the biggest REU instead of flash? And what about why/how the last demo was figured out how to do now but not before?
Where is the best place to download all of these?

This is nice, but um... ya should've made the illusion of them running on this exact C64, C1702 system by plugging in power and turning them on so their power lights would be on, and the monitor's switch pushed in.

Guess what: There's an _easier_ way to say years like 2018 instead of "two thousand eighteen." It's "TWENTY-eighteen." Why is that easier? Because it's fewer syllables! So try it today!
