    I know you are joking but still isn't something like this more of a problem with the english language itself? Since draw can man multiple things but to not make it too complicated let's keep it easy. Draw can man two things obviously, number 1 being well drawing 2 card from your deck and adding it to your deck and drawing 2 cards as in painting a card. I don't know if it would kill the meme if Pot of Greed would be erratad to "Take 2 card from the top of your deck and add it to you hand.". Memes and jokes in all honors but I'm just saying.

    Why add cards that don't do anything in your deck? Upstart goblin is worthless. I would rather have more value in my deck or tech cards. /s To be fair, pokemon tcg decks often opts out of "deck thinners." This is due to a number of factors like inherent draw power being inherently higher in decks as well as there being no side deck. Matchups already can be pretty unfavorable due to typings which make tech cards pretty much mandatory.

    It's hilarious that someone could seriously not understand just *how much* more powerful Pot of Greed is than just about any other individual card in the game (and that's why it has to be banned). It may not seem like "+1 for doing next to nothing" is a big deal to them compared to cards with more flashy abilities or strengths, but what they fail to fundamentally grasp about card games--ANY card game--is that a card that gives you a free +1 is a card that is giving you *one more* of any of those cards that seem super powerful in your deck immediately to your hand. A card that draws you a single card replaces itself in your hand for a +0--it's essentially only as good as your next card, but that being said it is *as good as* your next card. A free "+0" draw card is particularly strong in Yu-Gi-Oh because of the relatively small deck sizes, forty as opposed to sixty, and having three cards in your deck that draw you a card to replace themselves means that you are functionally working with a deck size of 37 rather than 40 which increases your overall deck consistency. That's why even "+0" draw cards have to have drawbacks in Yu-Gi-Oh, because their mere *existence* in decks makes decks way stronger and more consistent, but to be fair this is a more advanced concept in card games that people don't tend to learn or understand until they've been playing competitively for a long while. Even if your opponent "counters" that card, it means that they had to use one of their own cards to negate one of yours, which is a -1 to both of you, which means you break even and they didn't "counter" your play, they merely broke even with it. A card that draws you two cards is as good as your next *two* cards. If a person wants to argue that any individual card is stronger than card advantage, then they don't understand the basic math that says two of those cards (or one of those cards and another card that provides another different solution) is better than one, and that having three copies of "draw two" kinds of cards in your deck means that your functional deck size becomes 34 and a hell of a lot more consistent than your opponent's, which is why it would become mandatory for everyone to run those cards if they were legal. To further explain that last point I will have to use an exaggerated example. Imagine a deck that has one copy of each Exodia piece--that's five cards. Imagine that somehow, every single other card in that deck is a draw card of (of varying names and slightly different abilities so they're all legal), all 35 of the others. This means that each of those draw cards draws into another draw card until you draw into one of your pieces of Exodia. In other words, for all intents and purposes, every single card in your deck is one of the pieces of Exodia and you just win as soon as you take a turn unless your opponent has an immediate response to at least one of them. Except wait, some of them are Pot of Greed, so they become *two* pieces of Exodia and your opponent would have to be able to counter specifically every card of yours that is giving you +1 to your card advantage. All this to say, people that don't understand how *huge* gaining a +1 to card advantage is in a card game are people that fundamentally are ignorant to how card games even work. Even the significance of "draw one card" +0 card advantage cards are lost on them, because they may not understand how or why smaller deck sizes are better and why every card game requires a minimum deck size.

  • @Arsilfarid

    @Arsilfarid

    5 жыл бұрын

    Wasn't intentionally going out of my way to be condescending, merely to very clearly and thoroughly explain the logic behind why draw cards are a huge deal in card games. Even when I said that people who don't understand this are ignorant, I wasn't meaning that condescendingly, I meant that as in the very literal definition of the word--lacking knowledge or awareness, or uneducated (about a particular thing). None of these things are actually insults, because if someone told me that I was ignorant about motorcycles they would be right. Okay, to be fair, some of my statements were legitimately condescending though, but it's because I'm familiar with the kind of people he is responding to in his videos--the people that play something casually but then want to argue with someone who has done an extensive amount of research, has a lot more experience, and has put a lot more thought into the subject matter.

    That makes sense: You're simply improving the odds that you're going to draw a kickass card sooner by reducing the draw pool, and of course increasing the number of potentially kickass cards in your hand. Sure, the actual numbers may seem small, but casinos make stupid money on those kinds of seemingly-small numbers.

    I just wanted to say that I completely agree with you, as I’ve thought about this before, and because Pot of Greed manages to “reduce your deck size” by 2 cards, I’ve always thought about it as a “+2” effect. Even thought I understand that you get just 1 card advantage and therefore the “+1” that everyone talks about. And no, I completely disagree, I don’t think you are condescending, just a little bit disdainful, up to a certain extent.

    I played during the time that pot of greed was legal and I can say this. That card should stay ban. Whenever someone would draw pot of greed and your opponent did not, your chances of winning drastically increase and when someone loses to it, they complain that they only lost because they didn't get their pot of greed but their oppenent did. People will also try to cheat and stack this card. There are other cards that can give you a plus one draw but at least those cards have conditions that have to be met. This does not. Overall it makes people real salty when its activated espeically when they top deck it and win.

    I agree, pot of greed should forever stay banned because hand advantage is everything in Yu-Gi-Oh, especially now. Furthermore, pot of greed has an unbanned version that I always run if I need hand advantage in my decks, Shard of greed. You wait 2 turns and then draw 2 cards. A lot more balanced than pot of greed and just as effective.

    @@VuTran-sr4ul I wouldn't call it weaker. You have to look at it from the perspective of the game's power level. In mtg, anything that can generate advantage at 1 mana is very powerful, but in yugioh a card can be only fine even if it generates advantage for free. PoG is obviously the limit for draws in yugioh, just like Recall is for mtg Drawing 3 cards in mtg is often costed at 4-5 mana and has mostly been a blue effect, but doing it for only 1 with no restrictions is just insane. Mtg also has a lot of ways to generate 1 mana for free so it is not even an issue to pay the cost without lands.

    @orgun4 жыл бұрын

    Magic player here and I appreciate that this is an old video, but it popped up in my feed recently so I checked it out. Just wondering if someone could comment here to see if I have this about right. So, in constructed Magic you typically have a 60 card deck that is approximately 1/3 lands and 2/3 spells. Assuming you already have enough lands in hand/play to do what you're trying to do and are intending to win the game this turn or within the next few, drawing a land is essentially a dead draw (not always true, but I'm trying to simplify). Yugioh doesn't have a comparable card type to this so every draw is essentially a live draw (in that you're drawing a real card at least). So this would make Pot of Greed, which is a draw 2, more comparable to a draw 3 effect in Magic. Yugioh also does not have a mana system, so, timing rules aside, the only thing preventing you from playing any number of spells on your turn is the number of spells in your hand and any drawbacks or requirements printed on the cards. So, if you were to play Pot of Greed and draw another Pot of Greed plus some other card, you could immedietly play the new Pot of Greed and chain them. So, in Magic terms this would effectively make Pot of Greed equivalent to a zero mana draw 3, closer to Ancestral Recall than Divination and obviously busted. Am I essentially correct in that reading? The other thing that got me was Upstart Goblin, a draw 1, being mentioned as powerful to be restricted despite having a drawback on it. This gave me pause at first because draw 1 effects, or 'cantrips' as they are often called in Magic are very common and usually require some additional relevant card text or card selection ability to be regarded as very powerful. That said, cantrips are often still very good and do see a lot of play. Thinking about it a little more, again the fact that Yugioh does not have something comparable to Magic's mana system, is what I imagine makes the difference here. The fact that playing Upstart Goblin is essentially 'free' (aside the drawback printed on it) effectively allows you to play a smaller and more consistent deck (and like in Magic, I imagine adding a card to the graveyard probably has some relevance in some Yugioh strategies). So this would effectively make Upstart Goblin more comparable to cards like Manamorphose, Gitaxian Probe and Street Wraith than to Opt, Serum Visions or Reach Through Mists. Although the former three cards have other relevant text on them, their power mostly comes from their ability to replace themselves for no mana cost (or no net mana cost in the case of Manamorphose). I don't know if any Yugioh players reading this are familiar enough with Magic to say whether I'm correct or not on this point. but I'd be interested to know. So, with that being said, could an effective drawback on a card like Pot of Greed simply be to say something like 'Draw 2 cards, you may play only one additional spell this turn' or even 'Draw 2 cards, then end your turn immedietly'. Would that still be considered broken or would that tone it down enough? Apologies if there already exist some 'fixed' version like that, but I'm not too familiar with Yugioh cards beyond what I've seen in some of these videos.

  • @Dzeeff

    @Dzeeff

    4 жыл бұрын

    First three paragraphs were mostly right, so great job! As for the last question: There is a card that gives you two draws that you can use that restricts you to not activating any spells or traps for the rest of the game, and it's seen a ton of competitive play. As for ending the turn, there's a Normal Summonable monster with that effect. It was played a lot in Japan but a few releases here kind of replaced it for our format. I can't remember how much I talked about it in this video but the most successful "new" Pot of Greed has been Pot of Desires, where the drawback is banishing the top 10 cards of your deck face-down, which pretty much means they're gone forever. Lastly, I just wanted to say that you're one of the only Magic players that's ever commented and understood how impactful it is not having mana costs on Pot of Greed and Upstart Goblin. Great analysis!

  • @orgun

    @orgun

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Dzeeff Thanks for the reply! I think sometimes it's too easy for people to just look at the card text, so in this case 'draw 2 cards', without really thinking about what it means within the context of the game system. In Magic we have cards like 'Divination' that say 'draw 2 cards' but because they have a mana cost, you can't necessarily play them on turn 1 or 2 and when you can play them, you're essentially trading tempo for card advantage because you're using your mana to draw the cards. I think if Magic players could recognise that Pot of Greed, within the context of Yugioh, is closer to a zero mana Ancestral Recall than it is to a Divination, they'd quickly realise why it's such a big deal.

    I find it unsurprising, sadly, that Magic players would equate resources to "cards" Anyone who plays Hearthstone should understand just how good PoG is though. Hearthstone has virtually the same card, "Arcane Intellect", same text, just costs 3 mana, that means that at best it almost costs you a third of your turn! Crazy to think about when you realize that in Yugioh playing a Pot of Greed sets you up for a longer turn than you were expecting most of the time, adding combo potential on top of basically giving you a 39-card deck and an accelerated turn counter.

The only reason those games let them stick around is because you can usually nullify or kill stuff like that in MTG and Hearthstone effects are typically either temporary or have some drawback which makes them situational.

    "You can't create anything original" may not be completely true but i don't think the person who wrote that comment would accept what you consider "original" as something original. Swapping out two cards from a meta deck might seem crazy for competetive players but i wouldn't consider something like that "original". He propably wants to see original new strategies and many different decks.

    It might surprise you how big a difference small innovations or small card selection choices can make. I'm not that familiar with yougioh, but to give an example from a different card game, a couple years back in magic the gathering there were two archetypes of Abzan: abzan aggro and abzan control. Both were 60 card decks... and they shared 52 identical cards with each other. Yet the aggro variant felt and played like a true aggro deck and the control variant felt and played like a true control deck. Another example I could give are decks that are mostly draw/tutor engines and then have a win condition. Two decks can have the exact same engine, but completely different wincon, which would render them only 3-4 cards apart but would dramatically change their matchups depending on what the wincon is.

    Why pot of greed is banned short version: In a game with no mana/player point/land/energy system like yugioh, spells have no cost to be played and therefore can be always be played (unless there are restrictions written on it). The rulebook says you have to play with AT LEAST 40 cards in your deck. A spell card with only the effect of "draw 1 card" would actually make the deck 39 cards, since you literally transform that card with the one on top of the deck and since the game is meant to be played with 40 cards it doesnt make sense. Pot of greed is the same but stronger, since it actually add 1 more card to the hand. (+1).

There is a card called ancient leaf. “If you have 9000 or more life points: Pay 2000 life points; Draw 2 cards” Ancient leaf is similar to the pot of 8000 here where you can only play it after playing lp gain cards. Ancient leaf never saw play because it requires additional resources to use, so it’s not a plus, and requires setup, and so doesn’t help consistency.

    It takes a bit of thought at first, but it's pretty clear to see why the card is powerful (and this from someone who's only experience is watching a few episodes and playing "Eternal Duelist Soul" on the GBA for a while, 20 years ago.) By effectively reducing your deck size, it increases the odds that you're going to draw a really good card sooner in the game, rather than later. Sure, 1:39 doesn't sound much better than 1:40, but games at casinos often operate on such differences in odds, and they make boatloads of money. That alone might not make or break a given duel, but it will have a very noticeable effect over many duels. And that takes effect JUST BY HAVING IT IN THE DECK. Add to it the +1 it gives to your hand, and holy crap, I never realized how such a deceptively simple card could be so overpowered. So of course, you'd be a fool to not have 3 in every deck.

    6:25 "Most mtg decks use basic lands, should we ban all of them?" That is someone who does understand neither YuGiOh nor Magic. A short explanation. You play no more than 1 land every turn and every land generates 1 mana every turn. That means you need to wait until later in the game to play the more powerful cards. The most important skill for Magic players to learn is finding the right balance between lands, cheap cards and powerful cards. There are 5 cards named "Mox", 1 for every mana colour. They basically act like lands, but you can play as many per round as you want. The moxes had to be banned and can never be unbanned, because they circumvent one of the most basic mechanics in the game.

  • @RealGateGuardian

    Keep this in mind: In tbe VERY beginning of magic, you had 40 card decks and could play any number of cards. So i could play 10 black lotus, 10 mox ruby, 10 mox emerald, 10 fireball. They changed it to 60 card decks with 4 max limit to non-basic lands. Then shortly befire the first worlds, they restricted the power 9 as people were using 4 lotus and 4 of each mox as lands were too slow.

    Technically it's +1 advantage, because you're discarding one card in hand to draw 2 more. Upstart Goblin is +0 because you're swapping one card for another, and giving the opponent a free 1000 life points. Card draws aren't THAT good. Cycling cards from deck to hand is useful in preventing bricky draws you can't do much with, but that's their only purpose. They mitigate bad luck, which in a random card game, is needed for it to have SOME skill (i.e. not just consistently drawing bad/good cards). I compare Pot of Greed to something like Cyber Petit Angel, and I'd consider Cyber Petit Angel to be infinitely better in that you're guaranteed a +1 USEFUL card, plus it gives you a resource to use for Ritual Summoning OR just another body on the board to block an attack. You can chain from CPA with more plays, you're up 2+ because nothing is sent to the graveyard AND you're choosing the card going into your hand meaning it'll never be a bad draw. Pot of Greed is a vastly overrated card. Yes, it isn't specific and can fit in any deck, but there are deck or archetype specific cards that have WAY more value.

Or your opponent draws an additional card during there next 3 draw phases. giving you a plus one instantly but then giving them plus one for 3 turns.
