Hikaru already knew magnus was gonna somehow draw that he didn’t wanna be on a Gotham chess vid

what a garbage title. they ridiculed bad moves cause they were bad moves, and the sacrificed exchanges were not part of some brilliant winning plan by magnus but just salvaging drawing chances. weird draw offer, though we can't see the clock. magnus would most likely defend that draw, but only one of them is playing that position for a win, he shouldn't be the one to offer a draw.

Stockfish only gives white +0.9 at the final position. Carlsen would likely have found a draw

We aren't seeing their clocks in this replay so I think the draw offer isn't as ridiculous as it may seem.

It is ridiculous if you think about it, coz even if they're both low on the clock only white can win so Hikaru risks nothing playing on, Hikaru in his recap says he doesn't know why he offered a draw instead of playing more, they were tied and since magnus was low on the clock Hikaru had all the chances

@@iflash05: But it's not ridiculous if you think about it, because if Hikaru is low on time, Magnus is good enough at endgames to potentially flag him. "Only white can win" is nonsense, the commentator was wrong and so are you. If white runs out of time, he loses.

@@mayebeline1149 do you have any idea how rare it is for an event like this to not have increment, last year only 1 super tournament had no increment, it is safe to assume this has increment

Because Magnus would be able to maintain mobility (he will always have a safe move with his bishop), he would not have to break his fortress formation or move his king away from his other bishop. Whereas, Hikaru has a slight winnable advantage if, and only if, he keeps his queen on the 8th rank to maintain the pin on Magnus' other bishop. This means that in order to win, Hikaru would have to use his pawns, flawlessly, to break up the Magnus fortress... making no mistakes.... with only a few seconds left on the clock. I think Hikaru would have won the game, given a few minutes more on the clock, but it would have required some lengthy contemplation to avoid a draw. The draw may have seemed premature, but these two players know each other's abilities and their own limitations with only a few seconds left on the clock.
