Commedia dell'Arte: Language
Commedia companies toured outside of Italy, to France and Spain, and so Gromalot evolved, a nonsensical babble speak that carried the truthful emotional intention of a character. This language meant that audiences were able to understand the action on the stage and enabled commedia dell'arte to become an international type of theatre. The film was made by Deborah May.

I think the closest we Americans may have come to practitioners of Gromalot were the comedians Sid Caesar and Alan Arkin. As a boy, Caesar worked in his parents delicatessen in Yonkers where polish speaking and slavic speaking workers would have their lunch. Caesar started imitating the sounds and rhythms for his friends. Later in the Show of shows he and the cast did send ups (probably travesties is the correct britisn word) on the recently imported Italian films and some opera besides. Alan Arkin recalled how one night when he was in the improvisation group, "The Committee" they had a question and answer session with the audience with Arkin playing Nikita Kruschev and another actor playing his interpreter. The most successful night for the audience, and the most terrifying for the actors, came when Groucho Marx joined the audience. Arkin used a Russian sounding Gromalot. He said he knew no Russian and didn't even really know anything about Krushchev. He wore a "flat cap" because he thought it made him look more proletarian.

Throwing "the Church" under the bus seems like the cool thing to do these days.
@joshuahill2715

I'm going to be the pedant on this 5 year old comment to point out that she isn't "throwing 'the Church' under the bus," she is speaking about how the Catholic Church, the predominant ruling authority of Europe, attempted to hold control over the very thoughts of the citizenry (eg. The Inquisition) by violently oppressing ideas that opposed them. Her point was that grammelot allowed commedia troupes to create art that broke those covenants because they were not actually SAYING anything blasphemous to the church.
