In Germany we call the blue ones caravan plugs, because they're mostly used to supply caravans at the camping site. The red ones were made mandatory in 1975 for industrial applications replacing the old plug/socket system we used before. The old system of flat plugs used before were considered unsafe, and that was the only time in history the VDE demanded a replacement or removal of these old outlets. The existing ones had to go until 1980 in West-Germany, in East-Germany until 1997. It was a symetric flat plug with four pins in a row. Housings of the sockets or the plugs were either made of metal or plastic. The problem was, that plug was symetric and had a small nose to prevent someone plugging it the wrong way arround. The sockets were normalised by DIN 49450, the plugs by DIN 49451. The pin arrangement was L1, L2, L3 and CPC. The nose was fragile, so the plug could be inserted the wrong way, and in that case the CPC of the appliance would be connected to L1. Creating a dangerous situation, not only the housing of the appliance would become live, the metal plug would also become live at mains voltage since the housing is connected to the CPC. They were available with 25, 40, 63 and 100A. 25A version with undamaged nose: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/69/Manderlstecker-3.jpg And a metal one, seems to be still in use. Obviously someone didn't care about the directive to replace it: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/65/Alte_Kraftstromkupplung.jpg Alternative to switch to would be Perilex, but that was considered to fragile for industrial use compared to the IEC 60309 system. The Perilex can be mostly found in small businesses, domestic dwellings, kitchens, laboratories. It's not so bulky and doesn't have such an industrial look like the 60309 system. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perilex And some things for the 60309, there are some specials about that system: -change of phase sequence. There are plugs available where you can switch over the positions of two lines, changing the direction of rotation on an electric motor: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0b/Phasenwendestecker.JPG -Optional pilot contact on the plugs 63A and above: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/af/CEE_Stecker_mit_Pilotkontakt_63A_6h_5P_2012_01_31.jpg That diagram shows how you can wire this pilot contact in. The N is brighter because on the 4 pin version you don't have a neutral pin on the plug. www.gutefrage.net/frage/pilotkontakt-bei-4-poligem-cee-stecker That pilot contact is shorter as the other contacts and can be used to switch a contactor in the distribution board so you won't insert or remove the plug with a load applied which would cause arcing.

@@efixx Must be to find reg violations during inspections. When you look at an installation it must be with the regs in mind which were in state when the installation was build. For example until February 2003 it was permitted by exemption from from the VDE to use 35A Neozed fuses as an overcurrent protection for the 32A CEE sockets. Simply due to the reason there were no 32A Neozeds available. In January 2003 they switched over to the new wire colours (brown, black and grey for lines). So if I find such a socket fused with 35A the first thing is to look at the wire colours, if they are the old ones (two black and one brown for the lines, light blue for neutral and green/yellow as CPC) it is fine, no reg violation. Sometimes also the labels on the parts help, when I find parts which were labeled "Made in West-Germany" they were made before 1990, if they're labeled 220/380V from before 1986 when the voltage in West-Germany was changed to 230/400V. But on some products like junction boxes some manufacturers still label them with 380V. They didn't bother to change the mouldings for them.

we used to use these plugs at the McDonalds restaurant I used to work at, first time I had ever seen these style plugs and really liked them... but they even wear down over time...

Great video Joe I learned that when I was working on a building site early 90s they were slightly different designs then but the same rule applied basically blue on blue yellow on yellow and red on red simple when you pay attention to the job in hand Great video as always Joe thank you 👍❤️⚡️

Unfortunately seen many times on music festival sites where dodgy traders turn up with modified connectors with the keyway filed or cut off the plug, allowing them to connect into wrong voltage sockets. So technically does prevent you be cannot full stop you interconnecting. Great video non the less

Was going to add the same comment as seen the very same at several local council "transient people" sites [not allowed to call them tra####s or g####s any more! Political correctness etc...] ... that locating lug ground off or the case split to allow it to be forced in to the socket. Bloody nightmare and woe betide anyone that tries to remove or fix their bodge. We now refuse to attend these sites.. we're always way way too busy now 🙄

They should make a bi-colour keyless plug for gear that can run on either voltage. It's ridiculous that stuff like drill chargers is often single-voltage these days when it would cost no more to make them universal, like laptop & phone chargers

Ain't that the truth Robert... to this day i have no idea how! Had it been within the last few years the phone would have provided proof. But i honestly have no idea as the person that managed it wasn't someone you would have thought could the top of an old skool Tetra Pak let alone fit a blue plug into a yellow socket and then ask why it won't work 🙈

If the dick dont fit, you dont force it.....mr thanh tran. In a pure resistive circuit this is the case but let's face it, if you cant see the colour difference, and after 3 minutes of forcing the yellow plug into a blue socket, maybe a brick laying or project engineer job is more suitable. If your holding yellow, look for yellow, holding blue......dont look for yellow 🤣 seriously does common sense come at a premium these days 🤦‍♂️
