Jeez I just worked out how long it has been since I last walked the Birdcage walk by the shed at Leicester, cough cough 35 years ago omg. It was full of 20's, 25's, 37's, 45's, 47's and the then new 56's, HST's had taken over the top jobs from the 45's. Thanks for a modern update and nice to see the shed still busy. Regards Dave.

Back in the mists of time I was TOPSman at Norwood/Selhurst and unusually also in control of the little shunting panel in the portakabin there which was a simple gate in, gate out pathing panel and I had to get my father to school me on how it worked so took me in to London Bridge power box and taught me the ins and outs of it. It was like drawing using push buttons long strings and if the unit was exiting hand over to London Bridge Central panel as Norwood Junc signal box had long gone by this time but Forest Hill "odeon" was still standing as was Gloucester Road Jnc. There was supposed to be a charge hand in control of it but he was often too busy out in the lanes and yards to be back to do some panel work so without irritating the NUR a special "dispensation" was made, not that I worried too much as the union bloke I went to school with hehe.

LIP stands for 'Loco Inspection Point' I believe. It was a depot operated by DB / EWS until they closed it down. UK Rail Leasing took over the operation of the depot and use it for their loco maintenance and overhaul projects. Not sure if the drivers are based there (would assume some are). Locos are hired out for various work across the country
