In the 60s and 70s I lived in London. Now, I wouldn't even visit. The mayor has destroyed it.

That man is a crook & a disgrace to our capital city, imo. I watch in horror at the antics he's got away with since being elected. Fortunately, it is from a reasonably safe distance, in the heart of the gorgeous Yorkshire Dales.

i hope the people of London vote in the best interest of taking London back

I agree the transit system in Tokyo runs like a well oiled machine.... clean, efficient, cheap and above all ultra safe.... Happy memories from when I lived there back in 89-91..

I stayed in London for a summer BEFORE this mayor and I won’t go back until he’s gone

The biggest scam for tourists was the end of the VAT refund, done by the Dishonourable Rishi Sunak. I was working in the Balkans and coming to London every quarter to buy photo equipment, and I must have spent over £60,000. When the VAT refund was dropped, I moved my shopping trips to Vienna and Berlin. London's loss. And I am sure many others have reduced their purchases in the UK.

I used to absolutely ❤❤❤ coming to London. Meeting friends, having a meal, and then going to the theatre. I used to saunter back to the train station, going via Gower Street, and fancying myself as an Olivier, Gielgud or Richardson 😂😂😂 Never once fearing for my safety, or the safety of my friends as they went their separate ways. In the 70s, probably Autumn 1974, I recall just walking past a Royal Mail pillar box when it exploded. Fortunately, and it was fortunate that as young registered nurses, my friends and I had been on a 'terror' course and took evasive action, as we'd been trained to do. 50 years later (and I’m told I look good for my age 😉) I couldn’t do the same. Now I’d need to fend off a person wielding an axe or machete - and I fear, even though Khan has presided over the most lawless time in our capital city, that when the polling results are released he'll still be London's worst mayor ever! As you go about London filming for US, your chums, take care Neil, because there are some nutters out there ❤ Isn’t it sad that we're even having to think and write about such things in 2024?

How frightening, Kev! Sadly, I fear you are correct. The dark side of power intends to stay in control, regardless how people vote. They expect people to accept the results, no questions asked - even when it doesn't unfold plausibly. Would've never guessed it would be like this now.

Hi Neil a man was working in London he had to pay a congestion charge of £15 then he had to pay a surcharge for driving a diesel van that’s £28, all in all £71.52 for 4 hours he didn’t have to pay ulex because his van was new but he had to pay the diesel surcharge instead he is in London at least one day a week I wonder how people who work in London cope it’s absolutely shocking.

Shyster Khan strikes again!

Interesting. Even in our small county the buses, no tube, have gone digital. You can still buy a paper pass or just pay cash but the app you can load money on it and it never expires and the buses have a scanner. You bring up the app's scan code and the bus scanner reads it and deducts your fee. You don't have to worry about correct change or extra fees. I'm surprised London isn't doing this. It sounds like it is done on purpose to take your money. 😮‍💨

Careful Neil, they’ll use it as another excuse to go cashless.

This is theft. they should round up change returned and this should be enshrined in law. If necessary return the whole amount and give a free ticket if they cannot provide change.

OK Neil, I’ve come to rant. The price of tea in the US is criminal. We’re short on choices and to try a new brand is expensive experimentation. I know that will fall on sympathetic ears here. I watch you before bed and then I thought I’d add a box of tea to tomorrow’s order. I might have sticker shock. Good night ‘ol chum, but I think I’m too cranky now to sleep anyway!

My goodness- I bought an Oyster card last year but it was one of the few occasions when I could actually use my cash! I was so annoyed when I discovered that in so many places they wanted me to tap my card and refused cash.

That was allegedly happening in the 80s/early 90s when the oyster card first came out. I didn't have/use one but colleagues at work did and this was long before Khan was around - come to that it was long before Tony Bliar created the position of mayor for one of his long time supporters Red Ken - so nothing new under the sun. Just slightly surprised it's still happening. The ARA did something similar in the 70s with buses, one reason I didn't use their company unless I absolutely had to. Among other things it was exact change only and if you didn't have the correct change and had to overpay you didn't get a bit of paper with the refund on to reclaim it (as Dublin bus do) it all went into the coffers of the ARA. That scam's been around for over 50 years, it's the oldies that work best, no doubt why they still use them.

Nothing compared to his pay per mile scheme.

Thanks. It is not sooo expensive (8,50 £=9,90€) considering the size of London....Munich is much smaller (1,5 mil inhabitans) and the one day ticket costs 9,20€....the tickets get more and more expensive and the service worse .. probably everywhere😉

👏I defo recall using the ticket machines when they first came out and they 100% gave change. Then we got the cr/dr card option, to make it easier. They didn't mention it would make it easier to rip us off. Stopped using them cos I got fed up with my money disappearing and not getting a ticket in exchange (cash pymnt). Even back then there was no way to get your money back it was assumed your trying to pull a fast one. Btw, there's a reason (actually quite a few reasons, regarding health & safety!), why the overground trains are on strike (remember that on Tuesday folks!). The gov. wants to close ticket offices, wounder why? 🤔..... 🙃🇬🇧
