Coming home to Galicia

Фильм және анимация

In a remote corner of Galicia, in Northwestern Spain, summer means a huge influx of people. Some are tourists, but many more are former locals who have taken up life in Mexico.
For generations, thousands of families have sought their fortunes there and throughout Latin America. But all the money in the world cannot replace one overriding wish: to come home as often as is possible.
Correspondent Gerry Hadden reports on the strong bonds that keep those who leave Galicia, so attached to their homeland.

Beariz, it's the one they have been talking about all along. However, that's the name of the village itself. There are more than 4 people in winter. The thing goes like this: in Galicia people don't tend to live in large groups of houses and the rest is all wilderness or countryside. There are relatively big cities (300.000 people the most populated one out of 2,7 million people in Galicia) but houses are kind of spread all over the place. The coastline of Galicia is, in many cases, a continuum of houses, you wouldn't be able to tell where one village ends and one begins if you don't see the signs with their names. Now, away from the coast (not too far anyway) that changes a bit, and you see small groups of houses here and there. So, although the village is called Beariz and what you saw there where the party took place is the main part of the village, they will surely be talking about one of those small groups of houses.

That isn't interesting for the report. What it 's about selling is the great fortunes that were made in Mexico among emigrants fleeing Spanish poverty. The problem is that it does not stop to report that this poverty is what it existed in the first half of the 20th century, especially in the post-war period. And that most of the emigrants who left then didn't have that luck of making fortunes (although the special hard-working and stubborn character of the Galicians made several do so). Spain today is several levels higher as welfare state than Mexico, if we talk about people in general.
