I know it's a running gag that Merle never heals, but re-listening to these episodes back to back, he actually healed (or in several cases offered to) in both Here There Be Gerblins and Murder on the Rockport Limited.

If this episode told me anything, it is indeed the case that the director was once a goofball like our heroes, but got serious when she took her job as director
