Go to the most religious areas in America and look at the education system there and compare it to the education system in a big blue city. You poor Summer child. My shock arrived earlier, 36 years ago, when I found out that children going to public schools did not automatically get free breakfast and lunch like in my country. And then it was the hatred against women. The image that I had of US women was one of confidence, freedom, liberality, and equality with men. Well, was I wrong. There is, and there was 36 years ago, some confidence, freedom, etc., but for the most part women were seen and treated as second class, good for only a couple of things. That's when it hit me: US society was profoundly conservative. Hatred of women as fully-realized human beings, hatred of the poor, and millions upon millions of temporarily-embarrassed millionaires voting against their best interest. And churches. Lots and lots of churches.
