Not at all! She's was technically perfect! When someone 'struggles' theres an unnatural movement of the platysma and the carotid artery... just not the case! You can tell her breathing is comfortable! It's visual, maybe not that clear if you don't know much human anatomy 🧐

I think you can put that down to poor sound engineering. I've seen Mel in Jesus Christ Superstar; she absolutely does have a vocal talent. But I've heard performances where the sound engineering resulted in the background music being foregrounded too much or one performer being foregrounded too much at the expense of another, and this certainly seemed to be the case here.

If you're gonna go full operatic, go full operatic. One pop singer and one opera singer just sounds wrong. The tambre is off. The tone is off. Even when they both sing the correct note, it sounds like she is flat and he is sharp. 🤷‍♀️ Just my opinion.

@bad1dobby I've never been a great speller. Lol. To be fair, most people are outclassed when put up next to Alfie Boe. I love Idina, but her placement is too forward and would not blend with him well... I'd have paired him with Sierra Boggess or the legendary Lea Salonga. ^_^ Someone with a similar classic opera placement and true chest belt. ;)

Another 'marketing' scheme..."let's put two singers from different genres together to draw their respective fans to the concert" to maximize profits. Sometimes it works, in this case it did not. Setting a classically trained voice with one that is not is a risk if the classically trained voice does not attempt to compensate. Alfie Boe has a beautiful voice, as does Melanie C. But Alfie chose to go full bore and not 'blend'. Musical theatre is a hybrid genre where the 'operatic' may be suitable or not. I noticed one person commented that Melanie C was 'outclassed' by Alfie Boe. Rubbish! Both can sing with power and with tenderness. Alfie's 'power' is his training to project to the back row of the third balcony sans microphone. Melanie C's power is making us believe the emotions of the song. That's not to say that Alfie Boe cannot convey emotions in a believable manner. It's the difference in 'projection' that you perceive as flatness or sharpness. Just the opinion of a classically trained musician who has played in orchestras for opera singers and musicals.

Alfie was great, but Mel C sounded like she was reaching for the high notes, and they did not sound great together. It was still okay, but not the best.

Loving mels voice

There may be imperfections in this performance, but the big heart and down to earth soul of both Mel and Alphie rise fearlessly through in a stunning poor man's version of this classic. Sadly Mel C was out of her depth here...

I adore this song. And I do love Alfie’s voice, but to me a bit too… operatic in feel for this I guess. Also, after listening to that perfect lock of harmonies between Karen Olivo and Aaron Tveit where not even the performers themselves knows who’s singing what part… yeah this pairing doesn’t really work for me.

It's a one off.

His voice is pure and clear. Her voice sounds crackly, like she's a heavy smoker.

Boe could have toned the volume down, big time. A duet is a duet, not a competition.

I think it's due to the different style...it's difficult to merge an operatic with a pop voice - he should have adapt his style to a less operatic way of singing but I get it can be difficult with his training

Okay, it's not the best compared to the movie. But with that said, I do love the song. Alfie is an amazing singer and Mel C has for me just improved more and more after ‘The Spice Girls’. 👏🏻👏🏻

Mel C wasn't really good for this song sadly. At least the way she sang it.. there was no emotional/grace. :(

This version of Alfie Boe is the best ever makes me love it more than ever except for the female counterpart which didn't actually matched.

I have to disagree with almost all the comments. While he has a phenomenal voice, it is not suited to this song at all, which is more of a Pop/Broadway duet. Mel’s voice is much more suited for it than his. They’re definitely mismatched but he shouldn’t be singing Christian’s part. Moulin Rouge isn’t an opera. It’s a pop musical.

I agree with most of the comments here, except one thing. Mel C was FAR better matched than Alfie!! He had to lead the song and he started it all off key! He was trying way too hard to pull emotion and forcing his voice off....and Mel heard it! You can see her trying to coach his pitch with her hand movements. If you tune him out, this sounds SO much better.

Unfortunately I think it's just a bit too slow.

Alfie is too powerful for Mel. Mel sounds like she’s singing too low.

Would it have killed Alfie to tone it down a little, and not sing it so operatic? At the very least, to better match Mel C's level? You'd think it be easier for him to come down to her level, than the other way around.

I'm sorry - this is not a suitable song for an operatic interpretation ...

This is My Favorite Musical... We even did it Rocky Horror style, dancing in the aisles for months. BUT WHEN THE FK DID IT BECOME AN OPERA? Too over the top dude.

I don't understand why Mel C is still getting special guest spots. She just doesn't have the chops to sing in this kind of arena.

Totally the wrong key for Mel C which is why she struggled but I thought she handled the harmonies really well. I saw Mel C in Blood Brothers and she was amazing, there's no doubt she CAN sing. I dislike when big singers like Boe and Ball cover pop songs, and, I know this was from a musical but let's be honest, Moulin Rouge was a pop musical.

Mel wasn't the best here but she is Alfie's guest so he could have prepared a song that would suit her.

@Anjelica Snorcket Tiffany Poon did a telethon recently for musicians' charities, in which she rehearsed live on line. After 2hrs 48 min she hit the $10k mark with a fraction of the views shows get here. This was despite some technical problems when she first lost the picture and later, the sound. At one point her mother 'phoned her to tell her the sound had gone. She did not get any requests for something from POTO. ..lol

I like her on the lower gentler parts on this. Shes a good singer but not with him

Okay...no one will want to hear this...but I think parts of Melanie's duet with Alfie seems a bit out of her range. She has a beautiful voice but I love it when she sings in a lower register...seems that she is really reaching for some notes in a few parts of the song. I love it anyway....just a comment...just a comment...

Very good but it was too polished ; preferred the rustic combination of Nicole and Ewan in the film where the emotion was higher and more honest xx

Ok. It wasn’t unpleasant to listen to. It certainly isn’t the best version I’ve heard. Both very talented vocalists, but kind of mismatched here. I’ll go listen to Ewan & Nicole from the film version to reset my barometer now.

If this was a boxing match it would be declared a mismatch.
