Come Follow Me - Alma 23-29: O that I Were an Angel

An in-depth study of Alma 23-29, recounting the aftermath of the missions of the sons of Mosiah among the Lamanites. This lesson focuses on reverse engineering a lifelong convert, laying down the weapons of our rebellion, granting repentance, "all we can do," erasing sin, maintaining higher moral ground, anticipatory obedience, praise or pride, glorying in God, bringing thousands, forbidding slavery, suffering because of others, divine contentment, and more. Join Jared Halverson for your weekly Come Follow Me study of the Book of Mormon!

Thank you so much for your work, Brother Halverson! It has greatly enriched my own experience with Come Follow Me and my love of the Book of Mormon. Even more importantly, to me, my 14-year-old son has suddenly caught the bug and is listening and discussing your podcast and doctrine/the Book of Mormon generally with us as well. It has been amazing to see the shift as he's opened his heart further and begun gathering more light for himself. He can't be baptized until he turns 18, so building the best foundation we can in the meantime is so important to us. Thank you again, so much.

Every time I read about Alma & his "O that I were an angel" I think he was granted his desire. Think about the impact that Alma's teaching & preaching has had on all who read the Book of Mormon. He has had a profound about effect on the lives of millions.

Well Jared, you have just given me 2 weeks of incredible new understanding and testimony of the atonement of Jesus Christ, it's vastness and depth. Also new and compelling admiration and love for all of the people involved in the missionary chapters. (Well, not all.) I've been in the church a long time but am now, finally grasping the vital role of agency. Thank you for the blessing of your podcast.

I love Alma 29 and so studied it a lot. I thought it odd because it changed subjects so abruptly until I realized the chapter break was put in the wrong spot. It should start at 28:9 and go through chapter 29. Nephi told us in 2 Nephi 5:35 that we will be given what we ask for if we don’t ask amiss.Alma’s wish was a righteous wish I finally realized Alma’s wish was righteous but it didn’t happen in his lifetime. He had to wait until the Book of Mormon was published. Now his words of repentance are going forth with the power of an angel to all the world and in their own language. I think that’s pretty cool.

Brother Halverson, Thank you so much for your insights. Your comment about the young lady you worked with hit home for me. I have an adult daughter with a disease that causes chronic pain and many surgeries. She was expressing the same thing as that young lady did. She feels like a burden to her family and friends. She has been in intensive counseling for the last 4 plus years, since this started. You have given me a way to help her. Actually the Lord gave the way through your voice. Thank you for your time and devotion. You strengthen a weary mom.

Brother Jared Halverson, I just watched the other one, with C.M.F. I love each class Thank all for making them possible. The new C.F.M.Study books are different from yrs.ago, still needing more writings space. I do enjoy the changes ❤ Can't have everything 😂 I love each section because it has levels upon levels if one wants to go deeper and sometimes you are sentence to certain books in times of needing understanding of certain things ❤❤❤❤ 7:17 I love these people got the truth and they understood it is Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and Holy Ghost Then different types of messengers. This happened to Kings and Queens and servants. So tuching. I had to move to live with my daughter and family members Love them all. But a few churches have let her down, hurt her. And she's not wanting to step into a church for now. She prays and she asks questions to him ,and she ask protection for love ones. I pray that I will be able to be a good example and bring her and the whole family to The Church ❤❤❤ 14:33

Sis. Stone might need to leave the church to realize what a blessing it is. There are a TON of people coming back after years of stepping away. Might want to watch Comeback podcast on KZread. Sooo inspiring! It’s going to be okay, if she leaves. She might have things to experience outside of the church. The Plan of Happiness is because Christ loves His creations and it’s all going to work out. We’re all just in the “fall” phase as Jared teaches! No fear, just love!

When my 7 year old son was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer I was so desperate for God's power to save my son that I made promises to Him if he would get us all through it. I think it is a similar situation with the Anti-Nephi Lehis. I think they may have made a promise in their desperation to be forgiven. Although I don't know if the Lord really expects me to fulfill my promise to Him because he upheld his end (we witnessed miracles and our son is cancer free for 7 years now), I feel like he does and I will keep my promise. I think there is something more here. I feel like they made a commitment so that God knew how serious they were, even though He didn't require it, and they are going to keep it. I understand them. God saved my son and I will never go back on that promise. I know He will forgive me if I mess up, but I'm going to give it everything I have to keep that promise. My relationship with God feels so much more personal because of that promise I made to Him.

The prefix Anti means “not” or “opposite.” In Roman times, twins would be named things such as “Dominus and “Antidominus,” meaning essentially “Dominus and Not Dominus.” I always took it to mean something similar to that- a sort of “Lehi’s descendants that are not descended from Nephi,” in otherwords, Anti-Nephi-Lehites! “We are going back to our roots, in saying that we are descendants of LEHI, but not the same as the Nephites” :)

  • @dinocollins720

@@bekahart So you are referring to the Greek preposition (anti-) commonly used today to mean “opposed to; against.” I like your interpretation, but also in this context, some people might argue that it might not make sense for these recent converts to declare themselves to be “against” Nephi and Lehi. The alternative theory, is that the name element Anti- derives from the Egyptian relative adjective nty, which means “the one who,” “that,” or “which,” then the name would mean just the opposite; roughly, “that-which(-is-of-)Nephi-Lehi” or “the-one-who(-is-of-)Nephi-Lehi.

The common thread in the storiea of the Anti Nephi Lehis amd the Ammonihahites is death. There are soke really difficult things to wrestle with in these chapters. It soesks to omw of.tge mist difficult questions in Christianity: why does God allow son much suffering? And because it is such a difficult question, it also might be the greatest test of our faith: to keep believing that God will make everything right even when things seem so final from a mortal perspective.

Angel means messenger. In other words God granted Alma’s wish and made him an angel .
