Come along for a glimpse of my life in Germany. There will be cake!

Sit down with me as I show you around the village and how we live on the Continent. Sharing a few tablesettings, thrifted finds, and lots of cake. It's an eclectic mix of our everyday lives when in residence at our home in Germany. We are back and forth between Texas and the Saarland. See the Rathaus where I was married in a civil ceremony. Each morning, I walk to the bakery for fresh rolls and pastries and set the breakfast table. The church on the hill gives a view of town. A stroll in the forest is a great way to cool off on a warm day. Excited to share with you!

Generally speaking those who love Antiques also love the history behind them. Thank You for what you do and also it couldn’t have been said better about the dark history. What beautiful ways to honor those families who lives were taken away. You tell stories in the most elegant way so keep being yourself. What a lovely home,my son and daughter-in-law bought a second home outside of Amsterdam, the former owners left many original furniture pieces, art work and porcelain (they said they preferred to leave everything that was purchased by the original owners)...is it typical in Germany to leave valuable pieces behind for "new owners "? I thought it was remarkable and very appropriate.

The bakery is a highlight of the day. We don't have cream spoons in our American flatware sets. Not to be confused with a cream soup spoon. It's definitely a European staple for serving utensils. I also have a cream spoon in my Sterling Christofle Perles flatware pattern. This is a French brand.

I am a native-born Texan, as well as married a career USAF airman who was stationed in Germany twice. We were stationed at Bitburg 1962-65, Wiesbaden and Ramstein 1971-75. We lived in the little village of Nattenheim while waiting for base housing at Bitburg. We brought back a lot of treasures from there. In 1963, Hummels were a real bargain. I bought most of them at Riewers; is it still there? Thanks again for your tour. I love Germany.

I was about to express my own feelings about this post when I read Alexa’s, she said it all so well! This truly felt as though it were a personal visit with you, one on one. So very nice for us all! 😊 I LOVED the tour around the village, the beautiful things at Villeroy & Boch-SO many lovely things! I’ve been a person who was deeply interested in history all my life. As you share the history of the village, objects, etc. for me it shines a light on these things that adds a deeper meaning. I love too hearing you speak German! In grade school I studied the Romance languages, French in particular for eight years. Always wanted to also learn German and Chinese but they were not in the curriculum in those days. All my life I have struggled with the pace of life in America, I felt as though we were missing something important each day. That feeling was part of what led me to learn about other cultures and languages. Things have only become more intense over the years, that is until this terrible pandemic when the brakes were applied in every aspect of life. I’ve always said I move at a nineteenth century pace which my sometimes frustrated family agrees with me 🙂 THANK YOU for this lovely post, it lit up my rather low morning!

I remember how the people in our town would get dressed up and go walking around on Sunday's and maybe visit friends or family. I was wondering about the church. What denomination is it? We attended church at the chapel on the Army base Fliegerhorst.

The village has a Catholic Church. This is the predominant faith in this part of Germany. You are right about people dressing up for a Sunday stroll. @@LadyMaryBeth Hi, I had to look up the word jawohl, once I saw it was yes sir, my being a female is why I never heard it, of course, I have heard yes in German. I was only over there for 10 months, I was supposed to be there for 3 years. But at any rate, my German is very basic mostly learned from others, the Army does give you a 2-week course when you first arrive on basic language, customs, and laws. It was enough for me to go on volksmarches. One time I went to the train station and managed to relay that I wanted a round trip to Strasbourg France for the day. That was 40 years ago. I have such great memories of my time overseas and I wish I could go back. I had wanted to go to the UK, but my time came to a fast end, but I managed to squeeze in a few trips, besides France, I went to Austria, Holland, Spain, and Switzerland, and of course various trips around Germany. Germany was the main attraction for me being primarily German, my mom was 1st born American (my Grandfather was brought here as a very young boy), and my father's mom was also born in Germany and came over as a baby. Anyway, I had a marvelous time over there. Quite a few years ago, we went to go pick strawberries (we live in Virginia) and while we were there I heard 2 elderly ladies speaking German, and I went over and talked to them, I mentioned the bienenstich, which I found out was bee sting cake. I gave them my address and she sent me the recipe, but I never got around to making it. I am one who does a lot of homemade from-scratch baking, but the demand was for mostly American goodies. Sorry, this is so long, I must get my grandson to school. Have a great day.

Did your husband's family home sustain any damage to their home during the war years? You had mentioned how old the house is and it certainly is lovely. The plaques in memory is interesting. I wonder how that came about and when were those plaques dedicated The cakes look delicious. We had a neighbor many years ago and she was from Germany and was a wonderful cook and baker. She taught my mother how to make sauerbraten (hope I spelled it correctly). My mother made it for years afterward. You mentioned visiting and so many cakes on the table. Same in my family. When we have guests the table groans from the cakes that are brought in and the ones we have that were purchased or baked. Such lovely customs.

I asked my husband more about the effects of WWII to our home. After all, we are on the border and right in the path of destruction. He said the back of our property sustained damage from bombs. I remember hearing his Oma tell how they buried valuables in the backyard before fleeing. She spoke often about the war. My father-in-law spoke of the U.S. army tanks that were lined up in front of our house as the war ended. Soldiers gave him his first chocolate and chewing gum. He always had Wrigley's Doublemint in his pocket as a memory of this. The Stolpersteine (brass plates on cobblestones) were a project of the artist Gunter Demnig. It commemorates people who were persecuted by the Nazis between 1933 and 1945. They are laid into the pavement in front of the last residence of the victims. Their names and fate are engraved into a brass plate on the top of each Stolperstein.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. How frightening to have the tanks lined up in front of that lovely home never knowing if one of the soldiers would decide to take aim and shoot. That it didn't happen was a blessing from God. Just one more thought can you imagine your husband's grandparents sitting and relaxing after a hard day at work in front of the house remembering what had gone on during the war right in their own front yard. I pray your family will continue to enjoy this beautiful home for many years to come.
